update Top 40

i think this is a good group of players, 1 surprise player was Brandon Leary a 19 year old from the Allies/Tas who looked very sharp as a small forward kicking goals, very quick and skillful, a player who came from nowhere also from the Allies and i believe a Bris A product was Shadeau Brain, a player who has risen up the rankings recently is Olli Hotton, a few under performers have dropped a little, mainly Lemmey and Scully, McKenzie has broken into the top 10 at the expense of Elijah Hewett, McCallum and Hayes have broken into my top 20.

a few that have fallen from favour recently....

Jackson Broadbent - WA - i have not been impressed by his footy this year, i thought last year with his big frame and ability to not be moved in the ruck could be an advantage, but he hasnt really capitalised on his strengths or have developed any other part of his game like being a forward threat or ground positioning or even being that dominant tap ruck, so therefore he has dropped out of favour for me.

Seth Campbell - Allies/Tas - he has skills, but didnt really become dangerous in the champs, could still be drafted, but it might be late in the draft if at all, he needs to impress to get drafted and i thought he just coasted by

Max Michaelanny - SA - played ok, but as a medium defender he needed to show more than ok form

Max Clohesy - Murray - i still really liked what i have seen from him this year, but its hard to include him when he got overlooked for the VC team for the championships

Jonti Scuback - VC - is very up and down in form, recently had a game where i hated how he played, just wasteful in poss and it stood out as he was the only player in the VC team to be so wasteful and turn it over, so much so that i lost patience with him, but he has some good traits like being quick, having the ability to influence games positively ect, but he can also put in stinkers, which is annoying.

Any Particular knocks on Cowan? Also, don't rate Jonti Schuback?

I really rate the two of them and think their games translate well to AFL footy. You could argue that the two of them are in the top few performed half backs in junior footy.

Cowan gets a lot of the footy but his disposal and decision making are a bit rushed(his pros are he accumulates, speed and athleticism), he can turn it over a bit, but i have him in that 22-60 range, Schuback i have been up and down with him, he is one that every now and then can have a game where i like him a lot, but then he plays very poorly, i would say i was high on Schuback last year and this year he has been very up and down in form, he could be unlucky not to be in the 22-60 group, but he is out of favour with me atm like a few others.

That's fair.

I don't think I've seen either really play a bad game. I think Cowan tends to turn it over because he isn't afraid to try hit those low % kicks into the corridor. I think that decision making is something that will definitely improve at elite level.

Same goes for Schuback, Always plays his role well and has good balance between the offensive and defensive side of his game. I think he is a bit undersold as to how good of a defender he actually is. I think some of his low possession count games at NAB league level have been due to locking down on his direct opponent, but I could be wrong.

They are two players that really seem to have a lot of variability in their ranking which I find quite interesting.

As for Cowan. Blokes very good he is a high risk player in that he doesn’t back down but he’s also one of the better kicks in the draft. Decision making is the issue which will come at the level.

i mean he kicks the ball nicely and with penetration but misses the target far too often

Tom McCallum another Tassie boy playing for the Allies has surpassed him as the better half back imo, he has been added to my top 20.

He has a lovely leg, action, penetration, he seems smart at times but he’d rather try the hard option which obviously are hard to pull off consistently.

Surprised Clarke is out. Was brilliant in the vic metro vic country trial as a mid with 29 & 2 great goals. I’m a big fan and while he hasn’t been brilliant in the champs has been solid. First quarter against SA was good with 8 possessions. Looked as though he injured himself in a clash with sheezel at end of the first quarter as he was missing for a couple of quarters but finished strong. Each to their own though and it’s a solid top 40.

Totally agree, hope he's still there at the Crows 2nd, his speed and pressure is exactly what we need in our forward line, not to mention his ability to hit the scoreboard in bunches and his ability to have a run through the middle.

theres a group of players you could throw a blanket over thats around the low 20's to low 60's which i tried to represent with the extra 20 names and Clarke is in that group

the elite group is somewhere between 2-4 this year, then the top tier group goes out to low 20's then the AFL Standard group is from low 20's to low 60's then after that its the late/rookie types where clubs will take a chance with a player, so just because i dont have them in my top 40 atm if they are in that extra 20 they could be in a clubs top 40.

It’s a strong 30. No doubt some more will be uncovered next mth during the u17 games.

Have you seen much of the academy kids for 2024? Bit of talk on our board about us potentially having a couple decent prospects coming through.

How has Lemmey dropped nearly 30 spots?
Doesn't appear to be playing against WA, named for West Adelaide U18's on Saturday, notably Tom Scully not named for West Adelaide so likely replacing him?
Kyle Marshall named for South Adelaide so my guess would be Brodie Tuck who's not named for Centrals at any level likely coming in for him?

Yeah I get that. It’s very even and we all see it slightly different at times. Sometime we watch specific players more.

How has Lemmey dropped nearly 30 spots?

he was over-rated and adjustments have been made, if you want to know the history of this particular decision i can go through it for you, i saw him in the u17s and was a bit underwhelmed, he played u19's and looked ok there, then reports he had played ok in the sanfl seniors, so because he was 199cm and an underager last year in the sanfl for 2 games the media went into hype mode and i followed suite, then this year he went through some health isuues, but has been very underwhelming in his draft year which is where you expect improvement and there was not much improvement and if anything he went backwards(excuses aside) as you can see, 3 games in the champs for 1 goal, but more importantly dropping easy marks, hardly getting into the play affecting maybe half a dozen contests a game ect, on top of playing poorly for the Academy and not showing enough in the dozen or so games i have seen him play, there has been zero improvement and he seems to not be overly competitive, brave or determined which are qualities you can generally spot when you see them play more than 5 games, because of these factors i have dropped him to the 2nd round where i think he belongs(only because he has some key traits like his height, strength and a small bit of potential although he needs to fix his mindset to be better imo).

2021
u18's - 7 games 17.11 goals 3 CM
reserves - 1 game 0.1 goals 3 CM
seniors - 2 games 2.1 goals 1 CM

(stats that i can find from my notes from 2021)
u19's - 3 games for 3 goals (1 of those goals was against the Allies who were made up mostly of u17's players because TAS/NSW/QLD COVID situations)
u17's - 1 game 0 goals (looked very average, at this point i didnt have him in my top 30)

2022
u18's - 2 games 8.1 goals 0 CM
reserves - 2 games 2.5 goals 1 CM
seniors - 2 games 2.1 goals 1 CM

u18 champs - 3 games 1 goal (only goal against the Allies, usually the weakest team)
AFL Academy - 1 game 0 goals (didnt look like getting near it let alone kick a goal)

not only kicking low goal tallies for the last 2 years, but also having low impact and having low influence on games in general.

Ridiculous comments in my opinion. How many times have you spoken to Lemmey? Watched him train? Know him well?

Questioning a 17 year olds character because you've watched him play a few games is peak armchair expert. It's clear he's struggled at times this year, down on form and has struggled with continuity. So I don't care where anyone rates him based off performances. But saying he lacks bravery, determination and needs a mindset change? You must have inner sanctum access.

Davo27 comment looked very well researched to me. Some impressive note taking over a few years!

And he was only providing context to a question he was asked. Pretty average comments Chris.
