Draft Expert Davo-27's 2023 Draft Thread

Davo-27 can you please tell me more about Croft and where you’re projecting he might attract a bid? I think he got the 1 goal from a free kick right at the end but interested if he was staying deep or working up the ground, ability to impact when the ball hit the deck, etc. (or whatever else you noticed)
He is very athletic for a 200cm forward, was active in the first half taking some good marks, most seemed Contested, very quick on the lead, not the best set shot kick, but seems to have a good instinct for general play, I was surprised he was goaless until that free kick, either missed or didn't make the distance earlier in the game, he has a lot of AFL traits like height, speed, marking ability, good understanding of where team mates are, took the forward ruck duties ect, I'm not sure yet where to rate him, I would need to see more but he should get drafted imo.

He stayed mostly inside 50 for most of the game, was impactful early, but then had a tight defender after half time which restricted his influence a bit, until the free kick and goal he got in the last quarter.

With the Bulldogs sheer number of young key forwards on their list at the moment, do you think that he has the attributes to play as a key defender?

ANOTHER FATHER-SON LOOMS FOR DOGS

THE WESTERN Bulldogs' tall stocks look set to be further bolstered this year, with father-son prospect Jordan Croft showing exciting signs at under-18 level.

Croft missed the opening round of the Coates Talent League with ankle soreness but returned for the Calder Cannons last weekend and had 11 disposals, four marks and kicked a goal.

The son of former Bulldogs defender Matthew Croft is eligible for this year's draft and played as a key forward, with the 200cm talent's athleticism and speed impressing.

"He showed some real snippets with his contested marking ability and didn't look like it was the first game he'd played in six or seven months," said Calder talent manager Matthew Burton.

The 17-year-old spent time training with the Dogs over summer and could add another long-term key position player to the ranks at the club that has brought in Jamarra Ugle-Hagan (2020), Sam Darcy (2021) and Jedd Busslinger (2022) with their top picks in the past three drafts.

The Bulldogs had six father-sons on their list last year – Mitch Wallis, Tom Liberatore, Lachie Hunter, Zaine Cordy, Rhylee West and Darcy – before Wallis retired and Hunter (Melbourne) and Cordy (St Kilda) departed during the exchange period.

Matthew Croft played 186 games for the Bulldogs between 1991-2004. – Callum Twomey

Possibly, but you guys have Sam Darcy and Aaron Naughton who were proven defenders before making them forwards so you already have a lot of flexible options.

How does Harley Reid compare to Cameron Rayner? I was just wondering if this is the year to trade 1 if somebody offers overs. I would guess mainly possible if bulldogs and Brisbane have bad years, bulldogs offer say picks 3,6 for pick 1, or North using their own 1st and ports a more likely possibility.

Reid can run out a game playing midfield. Rayner still can’t.

I wasn't watching u18 footy very much back then so I wouldn't know.

Seen much of the Cannons this year yet mate?

Thoughts on the Essendon NGA kids please mate?

Ryan Eyre looks the most likely as a 191cm rebounding long kicking defender, Jimmy Nguyen has put up ok numbers in one of his games, Kako was highly rated, Naim and Taha played in the U17 exhibition game so keen to hear any updates on them.

There's 2 different drafts you're talking about

2023 draft
Mahmoud Taha - was good last year but has come back to the pack so far this year, he seems slower and less sure of himself in midfield this year, not as dynamic at times as last year, but could be a late draft/rookie option
Amin Naim - has been the best performing imo, has kicked a few goals and looks good as a sml/med marking/leading forward, could be a mid draft option? something like 25-50 range at a guess.
Ryan Eyre - beautiful kicking medium Def, takes the kick ins and can intercept mark, also a chance to be drafted

2024 draft
Isaac Kako - he is an exciting small forward who can take advantage of few opportunities, quite small but a really good player at u16s champs and has been good in bursts so far this year
Jayden Nguyen - similar story to Kako but as a winger, good u16s champs and performing so far this year

Had a feeling there was a cross over, knew Kako was next year, didn't know Ngyuen was as well. His stats seem very good so far in his two games.

Like the idea of Ryan Eyre, his brother was a taller KPP who didn't work out. Did say Ryan was the better brother which bodes well for us.

I tend not to look at stats, I'm an eye test kinda guy, if you want stats, I'm sure there's a heap of ignorant journalists who will quote you stats lol, not that stats aren't useful at times, but I tend to find too many lazy journos using them as a crutch, I'm sure the supercoach u18s numbers will be released soon lol

Hey Davo, as a Hawthorn man, do you think that Duursma is currently the clear standout ( excluding Reid) with our first pick?
No, he is transitioning to playing more midfield and isn't adjusting quickly, good forward and a good kick at goal, a work in progress in the midfield, there's a lot to get through atm, the first 4 rounds of Coates League, the AFL Academy game, the trials and then the champs and then solid opinions can be formed, atm they are in stage 1 of the pressure tests, so it's hard to have a solid read based on last year and a couple of games.

Good evening, Davo. I hope you are well on this religious, but really marketing, holiday.

I watched the second half last night of the GWV Rebels' 7-point victory against the Geelong Falcons. A few players impressed me. Luamon Lual exemplified why he could be selected in the first round. George Stevens showed why he's a top talent, and I think he has the potential to be a good midfielder in a good team despite playing in defence at Coates level. Lachlan Charleson had a very complete game. Joel Freijah had some nice moments, and I think he has AFL qualities. Angus Hastie and Joe Pike played well for Geelong.

However, there was one player who particularly caught my eye, and that was Tom Anastasopoulos. I know he's had a very good start to the season, kicking 5 goals last weekend, but this was the first game I've been able to see him play in this season. He worked well up the ground and found a way to get involved. It appears he has decent athletic attributes and is not afraid to tackle when need be. He also kicked a nice goal in the fourth quarter that I thought was going to be the catalyst for a Falcons comeback victory, which it nearly was.

So my question to you is: Do you think he's a draftable prospect, and if so, what do you think his draft range is?

I had him in my round 1 team of the week, he also played well in week 2, he reminds me a bit of Josh Rachele, I'm going to do an updated list soon and he will be a new addition, along with a few new names.

Interesting 2023 opinion. Are you able to show the climbers and declines by number? Looks like a few are being harshly critiqued. Buts it’s only your opinion.
