I don't want to be pessimistic but you'd think that's almost it for big Dawson. No clear place for him in the senior side and a recurring, serious injury just wiped out a quarter of the season.

My thoughts too. Seems to be a fairly chronic issue for him, will he ever be 100%?

Would think career is almost over now. If he doesn't show something in the second half of the year he will probably be de-listed.

I think that would be about 50% dependent on how many veterans come off the list at the end of the year. Chapman, Hunt, Corey, Podsiadly and even Enright could all hang them up at the end of this year and Stokes would also be in danger of being pushed aside. If 3+ of those six choose not to play on in 2014, we may only need to delist one player, in order to be active players in the draft. If Simpson comes back in good enough condition to play AFL football in 2013 and/or West, McIntosh and Vardy (particularly the latter two) have injury problems throughout the year, I wouldn't be surprised to see him get another year.

Interesting call re drafting Grundy, Very easy in hindsight but given Simpsons injury recruiting Grundy would have been a good call. I am afraid it doesnt look good for the big fella. The thing that struck me in the article was Balme said he would have to start his pre season again. HE had put in so much good work and now it is all gone. You ask any AFL player if you dont get a decent pre season under your belt you are behind the eight ball all year. This does not bode well for the big fella I would assume by the time he gets fit and playing again McIntosh will hopefully be up and going playing well West as always is able back up and Vardy is back in town. (i hope thats how is happens). There may not be much room for Dawson as in reality he has given us nothing for 5-6 years. It will however firm that we will bring in another ruckman in the next draft or free agency.

Hate to call it this early, but that could well be it for Dawson. Same surgery he had 12 months ago, and we saw last year how that kept him out til mid year, and when he came back he was a long way behind fitness wise. In his sixth year, where he has to fight to prove himself worthy of another contract, he may not have the time to do it now.

Regards our ruck stocks though, it's not a huge hit for 2013 as realistically he was fourth in line. It just puts a premium on HMac staying fit, but given HMac's quality and what we gave up for him, we were always backing our ability to get him on the park and keep him there.

Third point, probably gives the opportunity to elevate Walker in the first half of the year if his form warrants it.
It could be a blessing PO.

I have had a feeling that Dawson would get limited opportunies this year.
Opening up the possibility that he would go elsewhere.

If HMac, West, and Vardy stay healthy we actually dont need him at the moment, but we're probably going to need him in 2-3 years.

Yes, but the big problem is the "if" about HMc, and the unpredictability of his future, given his past injury record.
They really need to develop a contingency plan right now for Simpson's replacement, if needed.
Bear in mind, too, that even if he gets fit, we still don't have any evidence that he is ever going to be a useful 1sts player.

A lot of if's and but's there... regardless, if he can't get on the park to play then there's no point sticking with him.

Sure, his future will be largely based on how well he can come back (not necessarily VFL. Ideally, the other three ruckmen would all be fit and performing well and Simpson may not get a chance in the AFL). I'm just saying it's a bit early to write off his career and that even if he doesn't play in he AFL this year, the status of several other players at the club could determine whether they give him another year.

So what is the pre-season injury toll presently ? Josh Hunt, McCarthy, Menzel and now Simpson.

Seriously what is going on - we just seem to go from one injury to the next. A couple I can understand but we seem to get serious injuries before the start of the season way too much for my liking.

In fairness, there's not really much else to talk about at this stage of the season, so it seems like all we hear about is injuries, mixed in with the odd puff piece about Player X who is 'training the house down'.

Hopefully we learned a bit for last year since we were in the same boat.

McIntosh (even if half fit), West & Vardy looks a bit better than West & Stephenson (and later in the year Walker).

Walker would now have to be elevated onto the senior list wouldn't he?

Walker's the obvious, in fact only realistic, uplift if they can and do put Simpson on the LTI.

Devastated for Dawson , heartbreaking for the kid to put in all the hard work post operation and succumb to the same injury again.

In terms of 2013 I wasn't in favour of delisting Orren as I felt HMac was a risk and I absolutely do not want Vardy to Ruck - as I see him as a true mobile forward and do not want some dinosaurs knee making deliberate contact with the hip in a ruck contest. We now look to be short on our ruck stocks yet again. In terms of the future whilst I rate Thurlow if Grundy reaches his hyped potential we may look a little foolish.

I agree. But Hmac had corrective surgery last year. Something he didn't do previously.
So with a bit of luck he will be over it to a point where he is only rested twice during the year.

I hope you're right.
But Veedubs obviously knows more about these things than I do, and he's been more than a little wary about HMc's prospects.

I wonder if this happened the week before the draft whether they would've taken Grundy.......

I think those who wondered why we didn't go for Grundy but went for this kid named Thurlow will be very happy with the clubs decision as time goes by ;)

That boy looks to be a bloody rippa!

Fortunately we have a ready made replacement in Tom Hawkins...
