We have about 4 better small defenders. Jacob Surjan will be snapped up by Freo before us anyway

Id rather Paul Medhurst on the rookie list then David Rodan on the main list

On the Rodan or Surjan etc.

It's where the clubs are at. Port want as many kids as possible to broaden their chances of getting a good one. Rodan & Surjan wouldn't be coming to the club to make our 22 better, they'd becoming to make our 32 better. When things got really bad we had the likes of Murray Newman etc play. I'd think we are better off playing a Rodan than a Newman. While this hurts us long term as some players don't get the opportunity to develop we aren't at that stage. The next 3 years is about getting as many premierships as possible while Glass & Cox are around.

I wouldn't take both, just one of them. And they would have to be accepting of their role as a depth player. For mine, Surjan is a little more versatile and a little younger so is more appealing.

Ones that jump out to me are Bret Thornton or Paul Bower. Once you get past Glass, Mackenzie, Schofield we start getting very thin. They could be handy depth players.

Probably true. The club will have a far better assessment of Newman than me. But still as I've stated above. We are in the veteran top up cycle of recruiting.

veteran cycle you say .Which veteran has any of the last 10 premier team bought to the club helped the team win ??? stuart dew the only one I can think of .veteran I mean a player of 28 years and older .Then how many clubs have bought in new talent from the draft and made a impact . joel selwood cyril rioli spring to mind

But we don't even have a top 40 pick.

We have enough retirements and de-listings coming in the next 2-3 years to not warrant adding another 2 or 3 players that would be going the same way.

True, but I'd still take him over re-signing any of Dalziell, Strijk or Stevenson.

No, we don't. If he's fit, he'd be our best small defender. The reservation will be health given his style of football.

I would kick the tyres on Surjan, but that's assuming health and a heavy incentive-laden contract.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Good teams have players superfluous to their needs. You're an incredibly gifted team to win a premiership playing minimal numbers.

eaglenut, with the greatest of respect would you mind formatting your comments into a readable style? It's incredibly difficult trying to understand your opinion. That makes it difficult to engage in discussion providing the appropriate response.

Call for drafting shake-up
West Coast, Fremantle and the AFL will tonight call for a dramatic overhaul of the WA development system as fears mount that the 2012 national draft will be one of the State's leanest.

West Coast chief executive Trevor Nisbett, Fremantle recruiters Neil Ross and Adam Jones, AFL talent staff Kevin Sheehan and Michael Ablett, former West Coast chairman of selectors Tim Gepp, WAFL football director Grant Dorrington, football manager Cameron Knapton, State academy manager Raff Guadagnino and several commissioners will discuss how to reverse the slide.

Sounds like a good way to pinch some local sliders.

Sheehan is passionate but he doesn't leave his pond. I remember his commentary for the 2009 draft, admitted he knew little of Fyfe.

For instance id take Lowrie not getting nominated for the National combine was a good sign, he would have been nominated by Westcoast and Fremantle, but probably failed to impress enough Victorian sides in the champs.

Brad Wirra and Rob Wiley not replaced after 2011 was an error .

VICs complaining that A Selwood and A Sandilands getting too much inside player info after the WA U/16 coaching duties . VIC paranoia at its best !

I think times are slightly changing and players are being delisted/leaving clubs even if they have a bit to offer as clubs (such as Port) choose an ultra-youth policy.

While others, such as a Broughton don't fit with the team structure.

So it's not an overly bad option to pick up a needs based VET (or older player) if it doesn't really cost you anything.

History does suggest that drafting/trading does provide the most benefit though.

Maybe one of the reasons we were happy to trade out of the 1st round. There was no obvious WA talent around our draft range. We would have been forced to pick up an Eastern states player who would have had to bide their time for a few years and then probably ask for a trade back home when they didn't get a game.

for u ausbacker
West123 you are saying we are in a veteran cycle of trading ?.

Which veteran has any of the last 10 premiership teams bought into there club ,improved or helped that team win a premiership ???.

Stuart dew is the only one I "Eaglenut" can think of .

A veteran to me "Eaglenut" is a player of 28 years of age and older .

So to add to that question , how many clubs have bought in new talent from the draft and made a impact . Joel Selwood ,Cyril Rioli spring to my"Eaglenut" mind

hope this helps

Well, Surjan is still only 27 ;)

If you're in a position to have draft pick 7 (Selwood) or 12(Rioli), you obviously use the draft to better your list.

However, if you're best Draft Pick is 38, you might have to seek other avenues.

Dear Mr. "Eaglenut"

Based on your concerns regarding the age of veterans I wish to point out Paul Bower is 24 years and 9 months old. At 192cm & 92kg's he is slightly undersized but should Darren Glass, Eric Mackenzie and Mitch Brown succumb to injuries he would be an adequate replacement to cover larger forwards.

Yours truly,

West123.

rhys shaw was 26 when drafted to sydney .mitch morton was 25. and niether where delisted trade once for shaw and twice for morton .

Sydney moved from the 40's to the 60's in the draft while Morton was traded for a packet of chips. They would have been delisted if Sydney didn't make deals.
