The most annoying quality he has is trying to use big words he doesn't really understand in an attempt to make himself sound more intelligent. This results in what should be a 10 second long question/statement taking 30.

Dermott is a rare breed. His pursed-lip smug self-satisfied pseudo-intellectual smarmy verbose grandiose bullshit is very, very hard to listen to

Spot on could not have described it better myself.

His unintended comedy routines aren't bad. Did anyone catch his interview with Geelong's Alan "Bundy" Christensen about 6 weeks ago? Dermie spent some 10 minutes asking / telling Bundy how difficult it must be for an indigenous player to leave his home, family and friends in the Northern Territory and how difficult it must be to adapt to life in the City. He then asked Bundy was that how he saw it, to which Bundy responded words to the effect, "Not really. I'm from Lara!" It was golden, and only a Dermott Brereton could have gone on like he did loving the sound of his voice....

LOL thats ****ing hilarious.

He is a moron who is totally up himself, but I like listening to him just for laughs. Here's some of Derm's greatest hits:

"Luke Hodge - the 21 year old, who turned 22 a few weeks ago"

"He scored that goal after only 22 seconds - totally against the run of play."

"That kick was absolutely unique, except for the one before it which was identical."

"I would not say he (Chris Judd) is the best centreman in the AFL but there are none better."

"Well, either side could win it, or it could be a draw."

"Strangely, in slow motion replay, the ball seemed to hang in the air for even longer."

All of these are gold, especially the last one. Classic Dermie.

Yeah, but it's cute that he tries.

The thing that frustrates me about Dermott is that he always comments on passages of play that have happened, in a way that makes it sound like he knew it was going to happen. Tries to make himself sounds smarter than he is.

lol, you have to be kidding, he is dumb, just gotta listen to him using what he thinks are 'big' words in the wrong context to know that. He was a great player, his football analysis is poor in many instances.
He's continually head-hunted by big media execs all around the country. No offense, but their evaluations of Brereton's seem to be a lot more correct than yours.

Brereton knows what he's talking about. It's not a fault having a big vocabulary. He's good with his words and he chooses to use his strengths to give everyone a good idea of what's going on.

No he isn't. If he was he would explain things in 30 words not waffle for 800 words.

one of the great moments in radio history was when they played that the weekend after he did it on Off the Record on Off The Bench. The reactions were priceless :D

which might be fine if he didn't sound like he thinks he's Moses bringing down stone tablets from the mountain with the words of god with every sentence he utters

I don't mind him, even if he is anti Bombers. I can't stand Bruce, if I want one commentator gone by the end of the year its him. This comes after listening to BT actively barrack for Port last weekend. I'd still rather Bruce be kicked out.

I'm gonna be the contrarian here and say that I think he's one of the more enjoyable commentators.

I couldn't listen to him calling the entire games, but usually his comments while long drawn out and a little bit of arrogant tone are actually right on the money. Don't remember him making a point that I didn't agree with. and just because he has positive things to say about hawthorn doesn't make him biased. they're the reigning champs after all.

If big footy is anything to go by then there are no good commentators on tv and the game should be broadcast in mute. seriously I've seen hate forums about bruce and channel 7 network, BT, darcy, richo, Dwayne Russell etc etc. seriously. people just gotta complain about something, this is Australia after all...

I remember spending the Port v Giants game toggling between a) fox commentary b) the radio and its shorter delay and c) all sound off. I couldn't become content with any option and just felt really frustrated after the game was over.

A good commentator is like a good umpire, you don't notice them, they just do their job. I would like to know the players names thanks, not Dermie's irrelevant theories.

I don't have a problem with any commentators generally, although Bruce gets a bit emotional and some need to bone up (study) on players names (looking at you Basil, BT, Dwayne). The problem with Dermot and other Special comments people is that they have a tendency to carry on too long, interrupting the actual call of the game, or wander off topic or as has been said before keep repeating the same points, stories , stats or facts for every player/ team, they see. I'm sick of hearing how much Michael Barlow likes the mud, comes out of Assumption College, is a pin up boy for mature age recruits, got overlooked in however many drafts. I'm already dreading the saga's to be told every time Anthony Morabito gets a touch. But there are examples of this for every team and every commentator. Just call the game FFS.
Dermie is probably better than most at comments, he just needs to give the abridged version not the novel.
That being said ..... Anthony "dicky knee" Hudson please stop!

Very true. I find his knowledge of the game tactically is as good as anyone, but it's just he takes to long to convey the information as he searches for an appropriate word.

There are pros and cons, hearing the commentators choke back the tears when their team is getting done makes it all worthwhile.

What people don't realise is that the average commentator doesn't know much more than the average passionate footy fan. It's their status that gets them the job

Those jokes are still going around? Really? I remember reading these 15 years ago.
