Combination of things. VFL form early season was ordinary, took until the game against Sandi in round 6 or 7 to actually find form. Then he needs a spot in the senior side. Then he needs to perform. Been given 2 blocks of senior games (R15-16, R19-21) and didn't set the world on fire. Onus is on him because sides pushing for finals can only carry limited numbers of players under the "development" umbrella.

Seems a tad unfair that Callum Brown was given so much opportunity despite not doing a whole lot initially.

I feel Josh was given less opportunity for continuity.

I think Cal has been fine and has improved across the year.

It probably does not look so hot him having him up against much smaller and less athletic players but having seen him against boys his size in the school competition he is an outstanding prospect against all of them.

Just on older brother Josh I like a great many of us had my doubts on Callum Brown but he is turning those around and Josh could do so as well he still has time mind you I think Nick is the bigger talent.

It’s a bit damning that players like Noble and Varcoe are getting games at this stage of the season, and Josh isn’t.

I don’t think so. Josh looks like he’s being played and developed as a midfielder/wingman. If he was a defender or small crumbing pressure forward then I’d say it’s damning, but those two guys are playing different positions so imo it’s irrelevant that they’re getting games ahead of him.

Yes he has improved but his point is also valid, in terms of initial performances there isn't a lot between them.

On top of what appears to be the perception at the club (and at AFL Stats) that Brown is seen as a small forward and Daicos as a midfielder, they bring different things.

Brown gives greater pressure (22.6 PA/game v 13.4 for Daicos) and tackling (4.1 v 2.6), ground ball gets (4.1 v 3.4), has greater run and carry (205 MG & 0.6 bounces / game v Daicos 197 & .2), offers more I50's (3 v 1.4), more SI (4.8 v 2.8), and plays a more contested game (34.5 CP rate v 27.6).

Brown's playing his role.

Did anyone notice that Brown’s kick inside 50m essentially forced JT to run onto it and into goal? Those kicks are worth their weight in gold. We have so many players who just predictably bomb it to contests or go way too wide. Being that damaging in finals, where you have to take every opportunity... that would be valuable.

Browns delivery inside 50 over the past couple of weeks has been nothing short of elite. He just finds targets and hits them.

It was brilliant.
Replay shows he knew exactly what he was doing too.

Are they stats based off Brown's first 2-3 games for the year?

That's his point Brown was afforded the time to grow and also Daicos played similar positions whilst in the side. Brown has also spent small stints on ball at stages.

They have very similar stat lines in the comparable amount of games, when I look them up.

Having having 1 more or less stat in 1 area is similar Imo.
Btw no ones potting Brown here just saying he has been afforded more opportunity to settle.

Interesting that Michael Christian's son is also part of the academy.

Jett Buckley Born Dec 2006 (12 turning 13) should start seeing him in these academy games soon too.

Aside from Daicos seemingly being set for a midfield role, he wasn't available early in the year and took time to find form in the VFL so he wasn't an alternative option to Brown at that time. And Brown was dropped for R2-3. Who else was there taking Brown's spot in the side during those early games? Who were the other small forwards killing it at VFL level? Shouldn't Brown get the same opportunities as you're suggesting Daicos should have?

As I said earlier, there are a range of circumstances that can at times conspire toward or against a player getting a chance.

Ed was calling for Daicos to be included of his 8-9 possession game against the Bombers at Windy Hill and even earlier so anything he suggests needs to be taken with a grain of salt. When Daicos found form and a spot became available, he got his chance. Didn't do enough to retain it when others became available.

Equally, I'm not having a go at Daicos here, just the suggestion that developing players aren't given opportunity or that they're metered out inappropriately. Developing players will always be vulnerable to a returning established player, unless their performances preclude that.
