This was what the well mannered man did in those days though.
Arriving "empty handed", sans a beer was social suicide, even if the host did not drink.
The truly socially graceful would have also had a bottle of Black Tower, Ben Ean or Blue Nun for Mrs Host to boot.

Talking about social drinkers...the stories of Terry Daniher are even better than Vanders. One writer couldn't find one past player who remembers T.D being pi$$'d. They say he just stands there for hours guzzling gallons of ale with no apparent signs of intoxication.

After the '84 GF, T.D traveled to Ireland with the gaelic aussie team and sampled the local drop by the bucket loads.

The team was invited to the Australian ambassador's residence for a dinner. Terry, as VC, was in charge of performing the public speaking duties.

from the book the Danihers..

Terry tapped the microphone looked out at the crowd. " G'day Mr Ambassador, I'd like to thank you and the missus for the drinks and the sangas, the were great. Ta. And if you're ever up in Ungarie look us up. We'll give you a feed and a place to stay".

Did you know that by the mid 1980's the VFL was stone motherless broke so it invited non-Victorian Clubs to bail them out financially and West Coast with their 4 million Dollar licensing fee literally saved the competition from being kaput. Karma is a beautiful thing :).

Did you know with each expansion Team entering the competition the licenses have severely devalued.
West Coast paid 4 mill
Crow 3 ish mill
Dockers 2 mill
Power 1 mill

Now they just hand them out in AFL show bags

Of all the weeks I could have posted that fact. The odds are a year has been kicked at some other point this century.

It happened three times last year.

R10 Sydney 20.12 (almost 100 years to the round)
R19 Richmond 20.12
R22 Fremantle 20.12

The only time an end-of-quarter score, other than full time, has equalled the year was R22 last year, when Adelaide was 20.12 at 3/4 time.

It was a good stat while it lasted, though.

Thanks RtB. Looks like I've been cut down to size. Given several folk have made reference to other sports in this thread can I save face by proclaiming a cricketing fact. Shane Warne's 'Gatting Ball' has been paraded around in the past week given it's been twenty years since that famous delivery at Old Trafford. However few people realise that Gatting's second innings dismissal in the same Test match has indeed been replayed (at least in terms of audio) more times than the 'Ball of the Century'. Gatting was bowled off the last delivery of the fourth day . This is the only footage I could find online (thanks to The Late Show). Nonetheless one can still here an excited Bill Lawry in commentary. His piece of commentary has led Nine's cricket intro piece virtually ever since.

Good call from both you and Bill

Geelong let Greg Williams go to the Swans over a ridiculously small increase in pay and Sydney gained a champion.

I heard the same story but the issue wasn't whether or not Rhys-Jones was going to be in the team, but rather that Walls wanted him to play on Brereton specifically, and that was the debate between Walls and the match committee. Walls was out-voted but got his way in the end.

Then you're probably right, I tend to switch off in the mind tank when Wallsy is talking.

Just how good Leigh Matthews was.. from wiki...

"In 1977 Leigh Matthews went from being from one of best players in league to one of best of all time, with what was among the greatest individual seasons by any player in history. Matthews posted career highs in kicks, marks, handballs and goals, averaging 27.1 disposals per game and kicking 91 goals at 3.8 per game. He had a career high 41 disposals in round 10 against Melbourne, but the peak of Matthews’ form came during the last eight games of the home and away season, during which he averaged 29.8 disposals and 5.1 goals. He kicked 7 goals and had 30-plus disposals three times in seven weeks and finished the season with another 30 disposals and 6 goals against Essendon in round 22."

While playing in the midfield at a time when they all got less touches!

How did he poll in the Brownlow that year?

How did Teasedale manage to win it that year up against that competition?

OMG, didn't realise stats like that are possible unless it under 15's and you get the rouge 6ft boy who's been shaving for 2 years already. Quite amazing, *even more respect for him now.

*Would have him equal with Shaun McManus due to points deducted for playing at Hawthorn.

Great story from Tim Watson that one

A very young Watson would stay with teammates and get a lift to games (didn't have a license)

He crashed at Vanders house. Vanders and his mates were up til 4am drinking and playing cards

A very nervous Watson couldn't wake Vanders up in the morning to go to the ground. Eventually he got him up, Vanders walked around looking for his cigarettes and they eventually got going with about 20 mins to get from Ringwood to Windy Hill

Then Vanders stops to get a hamburger at a fish and chip shop, and refuses to leave as he's on a roll on the pinball machine.

They eventually arrive nearly an hour late, Watson shitting himself runs into the rooms to face Sheeds

Vanders has a smoke and strolls into the rooms.

Vanders kills them, Watson didn't get a kick.

what are the chances of that ever happening again in the AFL??

Ruckmen were more dominant around the ground in that era. The top dozen in the voting were mostly ruckmen and key defenders; Matthews and Bartlett were really the only "midfielders" among them. And Teasdale was more spectacular than most, that year at least.
