skipping breakfast and fasting for the majority of people is the dumbest thing you could possibly do. Especially if you're just starting out a diet. They're going to be hungry as ****, end up over eating and will just burn out mentally, physically, as well as burn muscle. Performance will be shit in every aspect.

NFI.

If you don't need to lose weight why would you skip breakfast.
There's no scientific proof breakfast is needed. It was nothing more than a marketing campaign by a breakfast wheat cereal manufacturer in the 40's that convinced the world (via America) that is was healthy and needed for energy in the beginning of the day.

So people started having breakfast in the 40's?
I know u don't mean that but it comes across that way a bit.

I reckon if you're legit hungry first thing, eat, but if you're not, don't.

Were is the proof that it's not worth eating at all? Especially if you don't need to lose any weight whatsoever? If not eating it is fine for some people great, but if you are hungry and not fat ****in eat if it works for you.

You can “skip” breakfast and follow some form of IF and still eat at meaintenace/surplus calories

Breakfast is such a good place for people to begin behaviour change around diet and eating. It’s at home, you make it routine and within a week you can develop a habit of starting off the day exactly as you want. Puts you in a healthy mindset (I’m all about mindset and it’s contribution to momentum for habit shift).

If you already have good/heathy breakfasts then great - get your dinners tightened up. Again it’s at home. Might still snack and blow out during the day, but if you get on a roll with healthy breakfasts and dinners then cutting out the snacks or getting your lunches sorted is much easier.

Haven’t explained it well but it’s how I went from eating crap all day every day to being totally in control of my food (including planned treats/blow outs/cheat occasions).

Whole hog changes can put you in the dreaded boom/bust cycle which leaves you vulnerable to unnecessary willpower challenges. I also see willpower as a limited resource, so incremental, steady changes are best for sustainable changes.

People should do whatever is best suited to achieve their goals.

If someone is happy with their current weight and enjoys eating breakfast there's no reason not to do it.

I've just started taking salads to work instead and as of this morning riding to work. Think it's only about 6kms each way but as I get used to it there's various different routes I can take to add Kilometers or difficulty. After a rough night with the young fella I didn't get time for breakfast but after the ride I wasn't really hungry surprisingly, lasted until about 9 before I opened my Esky. Just cooked up a chicken breast to try keep the salads different .

I have another question from the opposite end of the scale. My partner is struggling quite a bit lately because she is and always has been skinny. I don't think she's unhealthy skinny by any means but the comments she gets from idiots asking if she ever eats and then the social media side where people seem to shame skinny models and then praise when there is companies using larger women, sprouting things like "good to see you using REAL women" has been getting her down lately. She has also lost a couple of kg's because she is still breast feeding our son. She doesn't want to put on any muscle, just wants to put on some weight. What kind of things should she be eating? She eats more than I do, her metabolism is mental, there's nearly not enough hours in her day to eat more and it doesn't seem to matter if she it's healthy or eats crap. Anyone got any tips or been through similar so I can try help her out?

So breakfast was a marketing ploy in the 40s?
Had nothing to do with having the last meal called dinner around 6pm and then waking up around 7am after going to bed at around 10pm...so near on 12 hrs of no food???

I'd say that anyone who eats breakfast does so because they are hungry
The marketing of the 40's was when they convinced the world a heavy carb based cereal breakfast was essential and the healthiest, up until them very high protein egg/meat breakfast was the norm.

What's
Theirs still no evidence breakfast is needed for overall health or the mythical energy boost.
The majority who give up that early meal permanently find they function better, and have better calorie control the rest of the day. It's only when breakfast eaters (doctors, dietitians etc) cannot have that meal they feel like shit and that's where the myth originates.

What is the evidence in eating dinner? Or is that just a myth that the anti-breakfast eaters, those inclined to enjoy conspiracy theories and self-declared internet gurus have concocted?

It's so frustrating to read all this over and over and over again. All approaches to timing of food intake (e.g. skip breakfast, standard IF, fasting for a day, "eating like a king for breakfast, queen for lunch and pauper for dinner", small meals x 5 per day, larger meals x 3 per day) are so incredibly insignificant when compared to macro-nutrients and more importantly total calories.

If it was as simple as "hey bro just hit your calorie and macro goals" then no one would ever have a problem losing weight or sticking to their diet. Fact is most people do have issues with diet adherance or achieving their desired body composition and that is when meal timing and macro nutrient composition can be extremely important.

Tell her to just continue living her life and **** what everyone else thinks. If she's still healthy after losing a few kilos, the media and social media can go **** themselves. Apparently skinny/fit-shaming is acceptable whilst fat-shaming is not. Just tell her to ignore it.

Breakfast is actually break-fast

So technically you can break the fast at midday or 6am depends on the individual. Eating Nutri grain or corn flakes IMO isn’t a good option over say some eggs and a little bit of bacon.

Exactly. Which supports my original point that if you're going to eat those Nutri Grain or cornflakes, it doesn't matter whether you decide to do that at the traditional breakfast time of 8 am or whether you decide to skip "breakfast" and eat them at 6 pm for dinner. What matters is that you ate that bowl of Nutri-Grain or cornflakes.

100% this. Its habitual. I always had huge (mostly healthy) brekkies. Ill snack and have a smaller lunch and honestly rarely eat dinner (I train at night and don't want to eat before and its usually too late after).

As I found with my ill advised juice cleanse its about forming good habits and being mindful.

The porblem is most of us on here have basic understanding of macros calories etc. I’d say a fair percentage of the population don’t, they actually think breakfasts cereals are a good option. Just like low fat yogurt or orange juice

Do you have a protein shake before bed?
