Do Collingwood need to enter a rebuild phase?

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

We did a rebuild because we finished outside the top 8 for four consecutive years?
In 2014 we had a list that was 8th oldest.
In 2017 the list was 6th oldest again.

But as we missed finals, we must have been rebuilding!!

The Pies constantly "rebuild"

end of 2010 Medhurst, Lockyer, Presti, O'Bree, J.Fraser retired/left
end of 2013 Didak, Jolly, B.Johnson, H.Shaw, D.Thomas retired/left
end of 2014 Maxwell, Ball, Beams, Harry retired/left
end of 2016 Swan, Cloke and N.Brown retired/left
end of 2020 Varcoe, Treloar, Greenwood, Reid, Phillips, Langdon, Stephenson retired/left
end of 2025 Cox, Hoskin-Elliott, Markov, Tom Mitchell, Mihocek retired/left

But we actually consistently bring in senior players to replace the senior players we lose.

We don't just rely on draft picks and hoping kids come good in 4-5 years.

Such geniuses Collingwood, despite 5x supporters, 2x more home games, 3x less travel, they've won a grand total of 0 flags more than Norf in the last 50 years. 0.

Some of their supporters need urgent medical attention, I feel for their loved ones.

Just out of curiosity would love to see Collingwood's best under 25/26 side to see what the team would look like in 3 years time.
Of our 2022 list of the 45, only 16 are still in the 2026 list....we have been rebuilding our list, that is what good teams do.

The following are the players listed who were u25 (born 97 or later) from the 2022 list who had actually played some AFL games prior to season 2022. Only 4 all in bold are still part of the 2026 list.

Lipinski
Quaynor
J.Daicos
McReery

Ruscoe
C and T.Brown
J.Noble
Poulter
N.Murphy
F.Macrae
T.Bianco
Keane
W.Kelly
O.Henry
Ginnivan

The fact is the majority of draftees don't make it to 100 games. The majority of Richmond's promising kids won't be on the Richmond list in 2030.

Yeah you're replacing players with absolute cats.

Josh Daicos is the only good one bolded.

whilst Nick Daicos remains its hard to see the pies sliding too far back, but if Tassie come for him it could be time for the pies to cash in their chips for some high end picks and start the rebuild.

What does 50 years ago when North simply bought a premiership contending list have to do with rebuilding in AFL era?

Since 2010, a Pie supporter has seen there team win 228 games meanwhile North fans have seen just 136 wins (Carlton 146 and Essendon 152).

But yes, Collingwood should change its list management approach and follow what those powers have done and gut their list to bring in draft picks.

That is the point. People said the cliff had come in 2021, we were cooked and the list was stuffed and we had no youth.

3 top4 finishes and a flag in the next 4 seasons and now the "experts" are again saying the cliff is back and the list is stuffed and we have no youth.

N.Daicos is better than J.Daicos and he is the star u25 on the 2026 list.

Dude, no one cares. This is cope. You disregarded the facts, in 50 years your equal with Norf.

Are Norf closer to #5 or Corringwood?

It's not a difficult question.

Since 2010? Awesome, you've won 2 flags you had a great little era. Well done.

2 v 0, and you're currently further away than Norf. So since 1991 it's 2-2. Are you guys that moronic!? You're equal with downtrodden, debt ridden, have to play 3-4 home games interstate to survive and maybe a couple of games at MCG. Yeah, ok. I love these self reach-around fans. Just make sure you attend the away game to us so we at least get your $13.

When are North going to next win 10 games let alone make finals or win a flag?

The myth of the rebuild, being shite is no guarantee of coming good and winning a flag.
North had injuries to players last year... players we could ill-afford to lose.

We get them back and something out of Goater, Archer, George & Duursma and well at least be big enough to think about 10 wins and wild card weekend.

We had to get out the vortex, we did, took too long COVID hurt but we were decent all things considered this year.

2026 R1

B: Archer-Dawson-Logue
HB: Harvey-BT-Hardeman
C: Goater-Sheezel-Dovasto
HF: PC-Comben-Trembath
F: Zurhaar-Larkey-George
R: Goad -LDU-McKercher
I/C: Parker - Xerri - Powell - FOS - Wardlaw

Em: Mikunda - Pink - Darling - Daniel - JK - Whitlock - Stephens - McDonald - Banch - Urquhart - Simpkins

I honestly think we'll win 10 games in 2026 and are half a chance at 2027 with an ounce of luck. I'm normally pretty negative btw.

I like you a lot, but were you?

You're a wonderfully drilled side who gets their tail up and are hard to stop, on occasion.

Brisbane, and you can bank this and let me know how wrong I am... but Brisbane were never getting beaten last year, and frankly you can almost pencil them in for 2026. They won the GF by whatever and they got 2 more players AND Marcus' boys aren't even 23 yet.
Brisbane got well beaten by Geelong in a qualifying final this year. They lost home games to a few sides as well. There are no certainties when it comes to Premierships. The Bombers in 2001, the Cats in 2008, Adelaide in 2016, Richmond in 2018, Sydney in 2024. All were certainties at some stages during those years, and some were certainties up until the day of the grand final. Switch out the Pendlebury injury in the preliminary with an injury to say Ashcroft or Neale and who knows?
I'm not saying that Collingwood are great in fact they are a good 25% chance to miss out on finals next year imo. But I'm happy to reset and give it one more shot while we still have Pendlebury and Howe. The Pies will assess again at the end of next year.

Yeah but since the draft system was introduced in '86 we're 3-2 on you blokes (see how well we draft)

And if you really wanna get picky you only won the flags in '75 and '77 because of the "ten year rule" (which your blokes Aylett and Mantello) forced through at league level in 1973 and allowed North to sign just a few handy types. In just a couple of seasons North pilfered opposition teams Captains like Barry Davis and John Rantall, goal kicking legend Doug Wade, Brownlow medallists Gary Dempsey, Ross Glendenning and Malcolm Blight, Barry Cable from WA along with the Krakour brothers. Oh they also bought Ron Barrassi in to coach them and he brought Brent Crosswell along from his Carlton Premiership winning team.

So much for a rebuild eh? North's version took 12 months and a few mill in brown paper bags. Were there any original North players back then that survived the rebuild?? Lol....I remember David Dench and Henshaw, Schimma and Greig...but so many others were just foreign legion. But hey....it won you two flags until the 10 year scam rule was reversed and eventually a draft of sorts was established.

So yeah, since the draft in '86....we're 3:2 up on you blokes (and yet apparently our way doesn't work but yours does)
Go figure.

I was born in '82. It's 3-2 in my life time.

You have only lost 1 you should have won, same for us in that time, probably.

You were great in 2011, we were good enough in 1993 (beat both Grand Finalists by 38).

You're a good club, but you've won 4 in 60. It's hardly momentous.

Do you think the fans of River Plate are sitting around wondering if they're gonna win their next Premiership before Lanus or Talleres Cordoba?
You're the World's biggest minnow. Enjoy.

Why do we care about Soccer on a footy site?

Which of us (you or me?) are using words such as "momentous" to describe our Premiership success rate....but I have seen 5 in my lifetime and I'm happy with that.
I think the difference between us is that I'd never assume to think I knew enough about the runnings of another club to judge their competence or not. Growing up a Pies supporter you get to develop a thick skin to criticism because there's always been 11-17 other clubs out there all trying to put us down whenever they can....dadadada.

We get it, YOU don't think we're recruiting well enough or drafting well enough or doing anything well enough, ok.
Just don't expect not to be challenged by people that require proof for your claims. And proof about our clubs recent record doesn't depend on West Coast, Richmond or River Plate!

My prediction is that once the slide happens, Naicos will leave but he won't go to Tassie. I think he will have learned from GAJ's mistake.

I don't think he wants to hang around in a cellar dwelling team, and will look at a contender.

I don't know what your point is.

Is it I am not allowed to have an opinion that differs from Collingwood fans?

I am just trying (obviously not well) to prove a point. That I, although I'm a Norf fan, know what it's like to be a 'Collingwood' fan, well River, and although you might not want to hear it, River make your boys look like a minnow, whether you know or have travelled outside of your bubble. Clearly you haven't, that's ok btw. I feel your pain, "why are we only a little bit more successful than this uppity minnow in the big league?"

I understand.

It's ok, I also think my boys should win the Copa Lib every year, alas we've only won it 4x. For a club which averages 86,000 for home games and has 10m IG followers, we're frauds just like Collingwood. It's ok, we're the biggest, that's all that counts at the end of the day, isn't it?

Except....

No club in the AFL competition has won more premierships, or more individual games of footy than Collingwood.

So your analogy is shite.

Is VFL AFL?

Look you won a whole heap when it was a closed competition... not so many when it was opened up as a National comp, have you? Only one more than minnow plebs.

It is still a closed competition!?

Pies have won 1629 games, no other team has won 1500 - North only won 904 games.

Pies have been turning over our list under Fly, and will continue to do so.

I'm not a hater. I'm just not a believer in the magpie for 2026-2040.

I barrack for you against Essington, Geelong, Swan and Dags and sometimes Lion when I have bet on the Magpie.

I resent being classified as hater when I'm not, you mean man.

Yep, it is.

Yeah, ok. But in reality it's different comps.

Anyway, Merry Xmas... my wish is Collingwood on a Friday Night Wildcard Weekend - you're definitely good enough to get there, not so sure we are. But, if we do... can see near on 90,000 and the little joeys have an enormous coming of age party.

Then I wake up.
