Free agency came into the AFL at the end of the 2012 season.

Since then there has been 7 Victorian premiers and 1 non Victorian premier. The likes of Tom Lynch and Jeremy Cameron opting to move from Non Victorian clubs to 2 currently strong Victorian teams, even before they joined. Which big name free agents have the likes of GWS, Brisbane, Fremantle or Port been able to recruit? None at the level of Lynch and Cameron I believe.

Does the AFL need to look at non Victorian teams being given some sort of COFA (cost of free agent) allowance to make them more competitive in the free agency market? Or alternatively are there any other ideas to make this more even for all clubs?

Why are no non Victorian teams recruiting any big name players through free agency?
You plonker. We only had the cap space to get Cameron because YOU. Yes your club West Coast got Tim Kelly off us.

Oh and he wasn’t a free agent acquisition. We paid with draft picks to get him to us.

Even when going on one of your lame vicbias whinges you get sh*t wrong.

Tom Lynch and Zac Williams are the only players that have come to Melbourne from interstate clubs worth 1st rounders.

Going the other way was Rockliff, Daniher, Franklin, Motlop, Lycett.

Do Victorian clubs need an allowance to keep free agency Targets? Victoria seems to lose more high quality talent to other states at an alarming rate.

I would give an out of state allowance to all players playing in states they are not from as long as they are on under $400,000 a year, perhaps a 5% allowance or something like that. This applies to all clubs, not just the non-Victorian clubs.

No, West Coast already get the HUBA (Home Umpiring Bias Advantage) so they don’t need COFA as well.

Not a bad idea but what it doesn't factor in is where are more off field opportunities such as tv show, radio etc. I'd imagine there would be a lot more opportunity for players playing in Vic, SA and WA than in NSW and QLD.

One idea, put a cap on the number of free agents each club can pickup over a certain period.
Whether it be so many per year, or x amount over 2/3 years.

It doesn’t put the brakes on the ability for a player to transfer, but it could assist in players being spread more evenly.

Could also incorporate a rule that if a team haven’t qualified for the finals in say x years then they’re allowed to pick up an additional free agent.

Anyways just an idea.

Lol what.

We also paid many picks to GWS, honestly if clubs actually matched bids then free agency would be fine. Issue is often the comp is better than any picks which speaks to how useless the compensation is.

Always thought something like this would work because it allows clubs in a window to stock up where needed short-term, but not completely take the piss.

Then you’re rebuilding clubs get a sniff a year or 2 later for targeted players.

Evens it out a bit.

Still maintain that one of the biggest problems is the salary cap floor is too high. It means that the worst teams pay almost the same for the list as the top teams (even with the banking over years). Its too hard for them to have enough money in the cap to have enough difference to attract a player.

For example if you had the choice to go to Geelong and contend for a flag right now or go to North for an extra $100k but struggle for the next 3-4 years. Why is it a surprise where players end up?

I agree, but good luck getting the players to agree to a change.
