I don’t.
Because as it is my job and my passion, I was warned about this years ago.

I still giggle when I’m behind someone in a queue at the supermarket or booze shop and the cashier asks for a loyalty card. And the suckers pull it out thinking they are getting a benefit!
Several times I’ve answered the cashier with “nah, I don’t believe in giving my personal details to the Chinese”.
Normally meet with a blank look.

nope!
most coffee shops has some sort of loyalty card these days
Well good on you.
Got to feed that addiction somehow I suppose.
I think your having a bit of a larf, and fair enough.
But you can not deny the information that is given willingly to the biggest companies in this country is a worry.
I’m not so sure that this situation can ever be reversed now, not without some strong legislation, and as our political masters are in the pockets of these same companies, I’m not holding my breath.
I’ll continue to shun these cards, and continue to tell people of the dangers.
It’s a losing battle, but a good fight nonetheless.

If you are on the internet your privacy is being compromised. There is no escape, Your ISP will have details that can be shared to anyone without you knowing. Your bankcard, your drivers licence, medicare card. Walking down the street being captured by remote TV cameras.
You send an email to a company, they might onsell it to spammers.
There is no escape.

But what can we do? its happening to everyone

Yep have one to a local rural supplier.

They are the cheapest & I get about 3% back in credit.

Doubt they are selling my info to anyone.

How have people become So complacent?
I love that the “Medicare card” is being used as justification for the loyalty card.
One is a Government enforced card for the benefit of your health, subject to the strongest privacy laws, the other is a card used expressly to mine data to target you with ads, and has no privacy laws attached because you’ve signed them away!
Taken to the logical conclusion, your data is shared around the world.
I suppose if your happy to get a buck off that bottle of wine, then having Putin know where you live, when you leave your house to shop, means squat.

I’ll say hi to Putin for you when he’s next around for dinner.

I’ll say hi to Putin for you when he’s next around for dinner.
And don’t forget to say hi to Xi Jinping.
Because he knows where you live as well.
I seriously doubt they’ll be having dinner with you, as both know when you visit Dan Murphy’s so they’ll be in your house then.

What about those that aren't on social media, presumably less exposed?
Black_White
Social media certainly exposes you.
That’s why I dont do Facebook, Twitter, or any of the others.
When I want to talk to my family/friends, well I do the old fashion thing and TALK to them.
I’m a dinosaur.
I’ve no issue if you wish to give all your details, your shopping habits, your purchasing preferences, away to the highest bidder.
Just be aware that this is what you are doing and make an INFORMED choice.
Because right now, the invested parties who are mining your personal information, have no incentive to tell you what they do with this information.
Is giving up this information for a few rubles in return worth it?
Personally, I don’t think so.
And as I said before the last census, there is no such thing a “secure” internet traffic. And if you think the personal information you willingly give is safe from misuse, you aren’t living in the 21st century.

Same here.
I’ll make you smile I have a shredder in my home office and shred anything that identifies us - envelopes, letters statements etc

Oh my...

Collection of personal information: When we collect personal information about you, we do so by making a record of it.

We do this when:

  • you register with us, for example to create an account, to become a member of one of our clubs or loyalty programs or to send you information;
  • you communicate with us online;
  • you take part in our promotions, competitions, testimonials, events, surveys or focus groups; and
  • you deal with us in other ways involving a need for personal information to be provided such as when you contact one of our call centres or bring a claim against us.
We may also collect personal information about you by accessing data from other sources and then analysing that data together with the information we already hold about you in order to learn more about your likely preferences and interests. Personal information we hold is generally stored in computer systems. These may be operated by us or by our service providers. In all cases, we have rigorous information security requirements aimed at eliminating risks of unauthorised access to, and loss, misuse or wrongful alteration of, personal information.

4. Why do we collect, hold, use and disclose personal information?

  • to assist in investigating your complaints and enquiries.
We disclose personal information we collect for purposes which are incidental to the sale and promotion of our goods and services to you. For example, we may disclose your personal information within our group, to service providers who assist us in our day-to-day business operations and as part of buying or selling businesses.

We may collect, hold, use and disclose your personal information for other purposes which are within reasonable expectations or where permitted by law. You may opt out of our direct marketing to you. Our direct marketing materials will tell you how to do this.

We may anonymise and aggregate your personal information. We may do this for use and disclosure of the anonymous data to determine preferences and shopping patterns. We share this anonymised data with our trusted partners to assist them in marketing products and services to you that are likely to be relevant to your interests and preferences.
