World Supercross:
The news comes Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium was announced as the host of the World Supercross Australian Grand Prix, the second round of the FIM World Supercross Championship, which will take place on October 21-22.

The venue has previously run Speedway, drawing crowds less than 30k - Supercross has a bigger following.

SX Global’s President, Tony Cochrane, said “SX Global is thrilled that Melbourne has secured a round of the prestigious championship for the people of Victoria and Australasian fans for the next 3 years until 2024. The future of supercross is on a global stage and for Melbourne to host a round the championship adds to its impressive portfolio of major sporting events.

Digressing, this is an AFL site, the same Tony Cochrane is chairman of the Gold Coast Suns - Gil needs to let free of their hobble on that club, the man would do wonders for footy on the Gold Coast.

Nice to have friends.

They have two of the best stadium screens in the world now….of which live vision is not even 50% of the area. What a joke
The screens can't be any lower (making them taller), because then it would block the view from the cheap seats up the back.

The screen resolution is dictated by the broadcaster who will broadcast in 16:9. So with a fixed height and resolution, that means the screens have to be a certain width. Now there's still room to each side, so they can extend the screen and make some money selling advertising. That's why it's there.

No way is the footage 16:9 and they fill the screen at the start of quarters

The footage that 7/fox broadcast is 16:9. That's TV ratio.

The screens at the ground are closer in ratio to cinemascope (2.31:1), which you can film for, but you would need a dedicated team at the ground doing so (which they may do for crowd shots etc that you see between quarters).

When it comes to showing 16:9 footage on a 2.31:1 screen, you have to zoom in to fill the width which cuts off the top and bottom, and you risk cutting off the action that may not be centred enough

I’m now agreeing, but it’s s**t compared to what I saw at new white hart lane last year at NFL. Four huge screens capable of and actually showing four different views.

It’s not like marvel was particularly cheap to build or improve.

Marvel and the G often have the same bloke with a camera doing the filming of the gameday MCs.

100% agree that it's a s**t outcome for all involved, the corner screens could be used for a second camera view for example. But like all things AFL, everything is done cheaply and quickly and never really fleshed out properly.

Take the roof at Marvel. It has to be closed all the time, because the shadow line is too harsh due to the lack of light diffusion. So the retracting part of the roof has become redundant. They should have just built a glass/perspex dome, which while more expensive than a traditional roof, is way cheaper than a retractable one.

It's the little things like that, which add up and make gameday a frustrating experience.

Ironically it’s done cheaply, but it’s not cheap. Half a bill for a stadium in 2000?

Still it’s. Outlasted the observation wheel. Wtf was that about? Nice view of a freeway and a shopping centre

I reckon the other improvements will be a bust too. Not even being built on the water side of the place (wouldn’t want to ruin Gil’s view)

Docklands is failing. What’s shall we do?

Spend some more money

I’m baffled by all the hate for this stadium.
User experience more so than location.

Part of the charm of the footy is that it's outdoors. They farked the design so that the roof has to always be shut. If it's sunny outside, the stadium should be able to have the roof open.

The food/bev outlets can't cope with a crowd north of 40k, just absolutely shits itself.

Just use it at night time.
