News Does Ratts Need The Pressure?

Don't make it public, have these things said behind closed doors and assess and the end of the year! this gives the media a lot of ammo if things go pear shaped. Which they can easily do!

There's been no real pressure to succeed at the top since Brittain. I'm glad we are now in a position to demand success I luv it.

What about the pressure he is getting from the CEO. Should that sort of talk be left in-house? Not sure these quasi-ultimatums are the way to go with Ratts.

I'd suggest the public pressure from the top would be a gesture to appease the baying barrackers calling for his guts at every loss.

Could also be to show that everyone is accountable in accordance with our slick new slogan...

Totally disagree. Ratts had a fairly substantial honeymoon period with zero expectations, three number 1 picks and Chris Judd. The period is well and truly over.
you might want to throw in the loss of a duel coleman medalist there champ. Has a bit of an effect I believe

"The midfield, led by dual Brownlow medallist Chris Judd, is elite and the defence has been bolstered by former Cat Jeremy Laidlaw and draftees Matthew Watson and Nick Duigan."

ah what the?

Pressure grows for Ratten

THE pressure on Carlton coach Brett Ratten intensified yesterday when president Stephen Kernahan declared the success-starved Blues must reach at least the second round of the finals.

The Blues could wait until the end of the season before determining whether Ratten, who replaced Denis Pagan in 2007, is the right man to help deliver the club's 17th premiership. ''We've got to keep getting better. Personally, I think we've just got to win a final,'' Kernahan said.

Pressure grows for Ratten

That statement is nothing new. .. and it seemed to be delivered similarly to others. .. Its the goal for the club to get a pass mark but you can see there is some room for catastrophe in the way its delivered. .. Barring unforeseen circumstances, this should be the teams goal and Ratts should be under pressure if it is not delivered. .. but his tenure will get reviewed like everyone else who is reaching end of contract and I for one hope he gets another 1-2years at least because it will mean we have a good 2011 and I like his style. ..

All Sticks is saying is that winning a final is an appropriate expectation. Having played in the finals in the last 2 years with a "young and developing" list it follows that with maturity should come significant improvement. The statement that "winning a final is expected" is therefore so reasonable the only criticism of it is that it is self-evident.

Does that mean if we don't win a final Ratten will not be reappointed or, alternatively, if we do win one or more finals Ratten is safe? Not at all. In each case it would depend on the circumstances; injuries - including injuries on the day, who we played - i.e. losing by a point to the ultimate premier at full strength in a game won on the back of a last minute interchange infringement, and any other numerous possibilities. But that said, if all other matters are more or less equal if we do not win a final serious questions would have to be asked about Ratten's ability to coach at the highest level.

For myself I have every confidence that Ratten does have the ability to coach at the highest level and have been pleased with our game plan and our progress. I think Sticks also has every confidence that Ratten can coach to the level. His confidence is reflected in him being able to "throw out" to the media that Ratten is under pressure to win a final. He does that because he is confident that this is where the Blues are heading under Ratten.

Look at it the other way. How would it look if Sticks had said "I have every confidence in Ratten as a coach but we will not measure his performance by whether we make the finals or win a final"? This would be akin to saying "I don't have the confidence to make any statement at all about where the team will finish under Ratten as coach." Such a sentiment is appropriate for the Richmond president (progress for the tiges should be determined by how many fewer duds have to be picked for the side each week at the end of the season compared to the start) as it was appropriate in Ratten's first full year as coach.

Sticks also said:
"We've got to get to the second week of the finals, and from there you can go on."

This tells me the club has set a minimum target of reaching the second week of the finals with a view to going further into September, not just accepting a finals win.

Don't think he needs it but it certainly won't do any harm.
I have faith Ratts will lead us back to the promised land.

Blues pledge to stick with Ratten for season

Ratten met Swann and Carlton president Stephen Kernahan shortly before Christmas and the trio agreed to put off all contract talks until the end of 2011. Already the Blues' board had insisted upon the appointment of an experienced senior assistant to work alongside Ratten this year, and brought Alan Richardson over from Essendon.

Kernahan said that his comments, made at a premiership reunion function, were simply his own expectations of the team that narrowly lost elimination finals in 2009 and 2010. ''I was not saying what Ratts needed [to do] to keep his job,'' stressed Kernahan, ''I was saying what I hoped for, which is pretty obvious and that's improvement.''

KB and Ralph Malph ramped up the white-anting this morning dedicating the entire first hour of the show to Carlton's unrealistic 2011 expectations. Ratten is basically gone, Hungry named 10 teams we would struggle to push from the 8 and the midfield rides on Judd's back - just look at the 3rd Quarter of the Sydney final. Our forward line is still developing and we have no backline.

I personally no longer see any point in following the Carlton footy club and will be submitting my application for membership of the Kinglake Cake and Biscuit Decorating Association (est 1974) forthwith.

They're going to be smashed by the Yarra Glen Mothers Auxiliary this year.

I guess i shouldnt bother going this week then Thy?

Utter waste of time. Although as hopeless as we are I'll still back us to finish above Brisbane. Most pundits have them finishing in the QAFL. Don't even have a CEO currently.

Q. Is it more or less pressure to win one final, than it is to win a grand final?
A. Less

Q. Do we want to win grand finals?
A. Yes.

Well, we better get used to pressure then. Start with handling the pressure of winning a final and go from there.
