There would be no issue for them to do a till balance. Any Point Of Sale software could tell you what you should have in the till at any time of the day.
I think you just have proven the point that cash will be gone within 5 years.
Tap, or insert, card negates any issue. You see the purchase amount on the screen and decide to proceed or not.
The banks want to go cash free, the Government have stated they would get over 6 billion dollars more tax if we were cash free. (Hospitals would like a share of that!)
It’s going to happen, sooner than later.

I get this, and I'm happy for it to happen. But I have two cards of less than two years old, a debit card and a credit card. The debit card does not work via the tap, and I understand that's because its not a credit card. But I'm also finding that it (EFTPOS) doesnt work on some Commonwealth bank (not my bank) point of sale machines. It has happened on three occasions, in three separate shops, that I have been unable to purchase something because the Comm bank machine wont or cant read my debit card. Ridiculous!

You should be able to tap your debit card the same way as a cc. That’s how they’re meant to work

Yes. It’s the only thing I use when overseas, and I’ve inadvertently used it here instead of my cc (they look the same)

Pure debit cards will not work on tap.
Tap is alway “Credit”, this is why you cannot withdraw cash on tap n go.
If your debit card is branded with “Visa” or “MasterCard”, then tap should work as these are “credit” providers, even though you are using your own money.
Apparantly this has now changed but only for “eftpos” branded debit cards.

Oh, and another point on the payWave.
The actual “chip” is not the big gold one. It is normally located under the payWave symbol, at the other end of the card.
As the technology works only within 4cms of this symbol then that may also be why people have trouble with the system.
