I went to this place in Yarraville to get a pie for lunch. Boscasle chicken and mushroom, $5.50. Went to tap my card and the lady told me minimum $10 spend on card. I asked her if she had heard about covid and a cashless society. No pie for me.

Might be wise to carry some for small purchases. Perhaps it's your attitude. I had a similar experience last week using card and the proprietor accepted my under $10 card purchase rather than lose a sale.

Lot's of places have that minimum $10 policy. If you just want to spend a few bucks, you are sure to get some knock backs.

I walked out the door. That’s my choice, just like my choice not to carry cash. Businesses that continue with policies like that will soon go under. Banks need to change too. Cashless society is coming sooner rather than later.

I understand why certain businesses do that i.e. enforce the $10 minimum. The merchant fees eat into whatever little profit there is on a $5.50 sale. There is a minimum cost per EFTPOS transaction that would make it not feasible. The bigger chains are able to negotiate better deals and have smaller transaction fees.

I think as a buyer you should have had the option to pay that transaction fee on top of the cost of the pie to ease your concerns about paying with cash, but I'm not ready to crucify the small business owner on this one.

Would have happily done that, the option was not given. Hence I left, never to return.

I always have about $100 or more on me.

Same with me Maggie. I also get annoyed when I end up having to pay for small purchases for friends who don't carry cash.

I often get paid in cash so partly use it out of necessity. I too like the convenience of cards. But both forms of currency have a place in transactions. Obviously I don't share your squeamishness at handling cash. Cask is just one of many public objects which need to be touched in one form or another..

Too true, goonbags need some handling but when I have mine no kent in the public gets their hand on it!

I've found it really hard to get a lot of places to take cash at the moment. My partner had been helping out some oldies with shopping and they insisted on giving him cash for their stuff because that's how they do everything but nobody would take the cash off him so we built up this big wad of bills. We had an old school poker night with them in our house just because that's what you do when you have a big stack of folding stuff around the place.

I have found that generally cards are prefered but cash is accepted. The supermarket checkout wash their hands with sanitizer after every transaction. Doesn't really phase them handling cash.

Up until the covid schitt me to tears 19 thing started I was pretty much exlusively a cash person.
Don't like cards because I don't like my spending being recorded.
Now I am using the tap and go with my credit card, it's actually very convenient but I will go back to cash when covid schitt me to tears 19 ends.

Otherwise, seems like we're both happier with cash than a card. Different if your wallets stolen. Depends on how much cash you're carrying and if you have to suffer the hassle of someone using your cards.
