Can someone tell me the difference between a new car and a demo car? If you are test driving a new car that has done e.g. 23 km and are expected then to buy that car at a new price, then is it in fact a new car or a demo? I would have thought a demo car is one that customers experiment on an while a new one is not a car that has been test driven. Would be happy if someone here could set me straight. The Hyundai dealership only seems to have 2 x i30's in stock and hence you are test driving a car you would then be buying. Never bought a new car in this country so am confused.

Just purchased a new car and I would highly recommend going through a broker and not directly through the dealership. They’ll get you the best deal, newest made car etc.

A demo car is one they use for test driving, and they usually sell them off at a reduced price after a few months later.
A new car might have 30 km on the clock but that’s just getting it from them to you. It won’t be driven by anybody other than the dealer people
its a great car - my son bought one about 18 mths ago after checking out every brand in the range and they’re very happy with it

new car has not been driven by anyone nor has it been previously registered - demo car is registered, has a few kms on the clock and rego is transferred to buyer. New car is registered for 1st time to the new buyer - prob has 0 kms on the clock (is delivered by car carrier) - understand bit about this as did 15 months contract IT / systems analysis etc at large multi-brand dealership with 6-7 dealerships
 
Thanks guys. I did do some research and what you have says makes sense. Also a warranty begins from the time the car is registered. I had got the firm impression, certainly with the Elantra of which they only had one, they want to sell me the car I test drove as a new car. I hate car dealers! They won't leave you alone.

actually went to one today - son looking to buy new car - went to one of the dealerships I knew - ended up talking to sales guy I knew who was still there (they move around a bit) - he was pretty good, no high pressure poss because we had a connection - if son goes ahead with that dealership, I will use my contacts with the company heavies to get best poss deal - chuck in some extras, drop the price - you know you're close to a deal with car salesmen when they start to squeal, complain you are ripping them off, get teary and say it's all too much - then put a bit more pressure on, wait or walk out of the delearship - pretend you are taking a call from a competitor etc - the salesmen make a good margin - show no mercy, then close deal! :)
 
Not sure Eddie should be asking questions and requesting for information about the Steven stabbing. He seems to enjoy making a rod for his own back.
I'm not sure if I'm the only one, but I'm growing increasingly tired of McGuire in the last few years.

We were quite fortunate and got one through my wife’s work. You might have to do a little research online to find one that suits you. Much like a mortgage broker, the fee will be usually incorporated into the fee of the car. You are still saving a lot of money though.

The new cars warranty will commence from the day you buy/register it, even if it has 500kms on the clock. The demo‘s warranty started from the day the dealer registered it.
The advice not to get attached to a car is excellent. A salesman sees that and you will not get the best deal.
Another tip, deal on the last day of the month if possible. Applies to both new and used cars. All about making budget and clearing the lot. Probably best for new cars as the dealer is paying interest on the borrowed money that he has used to purchase that car.

P.S. don’t get attached to a colour. Mazda charge an extra $600 on the MX-5 if you want red. Ask for red and if the dealer says “I have White ready to drive away today at a $500 discount on the red”, ask for $1,000.

if they are giving test rides at the dealership in a car then its a demo. I realise that they might drape dealer plates on a new car to drive it from the ship to the dealership but if they're giving test rides, I would think its a demo. And youre right, the demo will have plates on it. I cant believe that a new car would have 500k on the clock. I wouldnt buy it. It's not new. I would say to the salesman or saleswoman or salestransvestite that it's not new and I'm not paying full price for something that has been driven 500k.

I never quite understand how dealers sometimes put higher prices on demos than I thought reasonable. I recognise the on road costs and the delivery costs.... putting the oil in the sump.... but I'm perplexed sometimes.

Hyundai's are driven onto and off of ro-ro carriers by wharfies at Webb dock into Melbourne from memory at a rate of speed and callous disregard for any mechanical sympathy and there is zero chance of receiving one with 0kms on the clock. It hurts to say it but the "new" car you buy from the dealer was probably red-lined and hand brake turned inside a cargo ship the floored all the way on a cold motor with stale fuel to where it was left on the wharf for a month or two before it was detailed and presented as a brand new car....

Normally you get a significant discount on demo models. Well you used to when I was there.
They make a lot of sense to buy. I was looking at a demo model of a Mazda CX5 when I was in Aus. I can't recall the exact figures but I remember the difference in price between the demo and a new model was significant.

well i've bought new motorbikes but never a new car or demo... so i'm no expert but I see the advertisements and sometimes the demo price is quite a bit more than new car price... as i said before probably equal to on-road and delivery. I always thought that they were promoting it as a plus to be a demo because it's been driven around and sorted out.

I just put a cx5 into the search engine of carsales.com. Picked GT model and ranked per price. Interesting the range of prices.

You know how they say as soon as you drive a new car out the dealer you have already lost about 10% in depreciation because it is no longer a "new" car, well you basically got that when buying a demo. Maybe not 10% but a nice discount. Maybe things have changed.

What type of bikes do you ride. I was a very keen rider myself and I've learned jathanas is also. I rode a hayabusa myself. Love the pure sports bikes like GXR's R1's etc but they were a bit too cramped so settled on the busa so I could get some sportiness but also a bit of comfort if I wanted to ride longer distances.

Love the pure sports bikes like GXR's R1's etc but they were a bit too cramped so settled on the busa so I could get some sportiness but also a bit of comfort if I wanted to ride longer distances.

i buy bikes and never sell them. I bought a honda vtr1000f in 2003. I bought a postie a few years ago. And then i was going to sell the honda and I bought a kawasaki w800 for cruising but I couldnt sell the honda because I thought it was worth more than what people were offering. THen I bought a yam xt250 because I started out on a trail bike when i was a kid. So its a crowded house. And yes sports position on vtr is a bit hard. I lifted the steering a few months back and got a good chiropractor and I still take it for a spin but i havent made top gear in 10 years.

The firestorm is a great bike. Despite it's years it still looks the goods. Great all rounder.
Don't know much about the w800's.
 
My Sunday started perfectly. I rode to Yarra Glen with a mate for a coffee, and then returned home. It was a crisp morning and the conditions were damp, thank goodness for heated grips.

Riding a motorbike is meditative in how it centres me on the present.

Believe it or not, I've been riding on a few local trips in the last week and i've had a t-shirt and shorts on. In fact the firestorm generates so much heat, its practically useless in city traffic in the middle of summer. The only bitch that i have with the bike.

i used to ride out towards warrandyte when i was a kid and go across the back of ringwood to mooroolbark where my sister lived at the time. It was like a country ride in those days. It was actually how I taught myself to ride the bike - in those days you just needed to pass the theory and purchase an L plate.
