Now, I know that England have been the far better team to date.. and deserve the credit they get for retaining the Ashes on our home soil but, they still haven't one the series. If they play poorly and we play to our best you end up with Perth. If we play poorly and they play well we end up with Melbourne. A lot of people on this sight have short memories and in my opinion are over reacting with the current state of Australian cricket. Yes the selection of players needs to be looked at, perhaps it is time for a review into the selection of players not just in our national side but also the state sides. But, there needs to be a little more patience I'm afraid before this country returns to the top of the cricketing tree. It won't happen overnight, but it will happen. There will be a reaction from former players and the like who won't like seeing us lose, as much as our fans do.. and something will be done about it. I think youth is the way to go in the predicament we have found ourselves in.. normally I would say we need to pick best available but those players won't be playing in five years when we should aim to be back at the top of world cricket. Over the next twenty four months we need to blood in the likes of Smith (continue), Hughes (same), James Pattinson, Josh Hazlewood, Tim Paine as our long term keeper, Maddinson, Khawaja (currently selected to play) and any others who appear to have the talent to play at the international level. The truth is not every one of these young talents will go on to have careers like some of our recent greats have, however they need to be tested to see if they are up to it or we will never know. The more younger players we get through the side in the next 24 months the better chance we will have of getting a dominant side in the not so distant future. If it can happen once, it can happen again.

Have to be careful with just pumping youngsters through the system. Look at what happened to Hughes. I think his confidence was shattered when he got dropped after a few games, I would hate to see other talented players similarly broken simply because we want to rotate youngsters through.

Khawa has deserved his opportunity. I don't think Beer has. I would like to see players chosen on merit, and not just youth.

I understand your point however the point I'm trying to make is that if we blood more at an earlier age their potential may be higher than a beer like you've mentioned due to experience. I want to see more players in ten years time to have played 100 tests retiring than simply 50 tests. I think you're right, some will have their confidence shattered but, the best will use the opportunity to improve their games and return as better players through hard work. I want to see competition between these younger players for sure, I want to see a generation of players competing for spots. Depth will come if we allow our best youth to have a longer time at the top. Remember when one of these younger players gets an opportunity to play for Australia, they also open up a spot in a state side for another quality younger player, creating a cycle.

the australian under 19 side recently won their world cup, beating india, england, etc....

to be honest i don't really buy this notion that australia isn't producing any talented cricketers anymore... the selection and coaching panel need a significant overhaul, and a couple of teams probably need to be added to the state competition to increase the pool of shield exposed players

Bingo, I reckon a 2nd NSW side and possibly 2nd VIC side would do the competition a world of good.
