Do we rank Sanders in our top 3 or was Sanders mainly cos we could get him for free/discounted?

It's a good question. There's arguments with his form he could have been in the pick 1 conversation and Larke Medallists are normally not slouches. I imagine if any of the talk of the academy and his time in contact with the club that we would have formed some attachment to him.

Wonder if the club has a fallback option of securing a solid B-Grade assistance package after a swing for the fence A-Grade ambit claim is rejected?

eg

A-Grade: 1st round selections, pre-list Sanders, a billion dollars etc

B-Grade: multiple useable 2nd round selections over a 3 year period, access to pre-list previously nominated draftees over a 3 year period etc

We have done very little publicly to talk up our bid. I assume that is a tactic or strategy the club has chosen to take.I wonder if we should have been a bit more active rebutting some of the backhanders by others?

There's nothing to indicate we're not being quietly effective behind closed doors.

We'll know soon enough how useful this exercise was though.

I would have liked us to have asked Kingy to talk up that this is a test case of whether AFL rules are genuinely applied the same to all or just window dressing for the AFL to justify whatever they feel like doing.
I think it’s fairly obvious that it’s the latter.

There is no way he would stick out his neck like that, or he would have done it already.

Is it next week the commission meet to discuss, among other things, our request for assistance ?

If BMac hasn't declared his intentions by then, any effect on the outcome ?
This is an interesting one. At first I was going to post that it has no effect, but then thought about previous decisions regarding assistance when players leave.
If a highly valuable player, and he has to be considered as such due to the interest, chooses to leave a struggling club because they want success in their prime, then it should rule out picks designed to bring in extra mature players as the value of the picks would be reduced by the same logic.

I don’t understand this post - we got those picks for ladder position. Other clubs got their natural picks PLUS extra high picks to fast track their recovery. If North doesn’t get what many others have, just because those same clubs now complain, then yes we are hard done by. It’s not pleading, it’s using the processes the AFL set up for underperforming clubs.

I know.

I hate priority picks. I always have. I hate how Hawthorn deliberately manipulated them and it played such a big role in their success.

What I hate most is we are now asking for them. Those other teams just got them automatically for less than 5 wins, but we are pleading and being patronised.

I thought I had reconciled with it, but I haven’t.

And in the end, this horrible 4 years has got us four top 2 picks. Not many other clubs have that many in a row.

I feel like I would prefer to say “**** you, we’ll get ourselves out of this” than beg for anything more.

Illogical I know.

Man, you have battered-wife’s syndrome and internalised that we don’t deserve equality. It’s not pleading to expect that the same rules apply to everyone. And we don’t even have hopes that high.

Bmac can declare his intentions but we only receive compo if we don't match and that can't happen until early October.

I'm with you 100%.

We already have Logue thanks to their help but I think we were chasing him for a while anyway.

But we knew when we were bottoming out it would suck and we'd get early draft picks. We were never chasing AFL charity. Even with only McKay compo (we should get band one, I have no problems with that given that's how FA is sposed to work) we get three first rounders this year without any assistance. So since the 2020s started we have seven first round picks plus george and Goater from the early 2nd round.

Remember how from 2011 to 2019 we had Lmac, Jy, LDU and TT as successful high draft picks, and Ben McKay. He was pick 21 iirc. We had those four in the top 15 and a couple more between there and 25 or whenever B George went. We've had more high end talent this decade already. If we can't build something out of that then maybe we'll need AFL help. Till then they can go **** themselves at AFL house.

We have so many talented youngsters we're talking about trading the likes of Powell and Jy as if its nothing.

The issue is that if we cannot build something out of them we will not be in a position to ask for help or attaining that help will be significantly harder. IF we climb back to mid table, it would be a failure of what we are trying to do and we would have again cut ourselves off from the proper elite talent in the draft.

Draft assistance is timing.

We do what we are doing right and it will be decades before we are ever in a position again to be able to ask for more. Which is absolutely a good thing. TBH I would happily go another 1972-2021 type stretch between spoons.

I have zero issue with asking the question around assistance because we have been historically bad. over the last 4 years we have been as bad as any team has been since the AFL came into being in 1990. Since then 11/18 teams have received an additional top 3 pick. The only team that comes close to how bad we've been is Gold Coast and they got half the world.

What's more is what we look like getting is watered down from that. The AFL seem to have shat it because we wanted a kid who is tipped to go around pick 6.

Hopefully we have created a critical mass of draft capital and talented players like we've never had access to in the drafting system and it pays rewards in silverware.

All we need is stability and some clear air for our footy department and young group to work together.

Our biggest handicap this year was not having Clarko or Tarryn available.

Our second biggest was injuries to guys like Chom, LDU, Jy and to an extent Warlord.

If we can scam some help out of the AFL this year sure go for it.

But caring about whether we get it or not.

**** that!

We need the mindset that we rise to the top (not mid table) whatever happens. Whatever obstacles or benefits we get along the way should be irrelevant. Just landmarks to look at on the journey to greatness.
