What sense in the media? Factual reporting?

The natural order is every club will have their turn in the bottom 4 and things like FA, future trades, father son, salary dumps, NGA, player trading, salary cap shifting are all really designed to extend a club's run at the top.

It is much more difficult to get off the bottom when the natural order is for top clubs to be able to take advantage of everything, all at once.

Look at Brisbane, they had their turn at the bottom and in recent seasons get the Ashcrofts, Fletchers and Dunkleys to now make a top 4 club stronger. Even Coleman Is a NGA (both of them).

Was he suggesting we should trade our pps for next year for ready made players this year? That would be gold
It only makes sense to trade them for players or better picks this year.

We lost a lot of games by only a few goals so with a healthy list and some more top level recruits in 2024 we could improve significantly.

If we don’t use them now and somehow win around 8 games next year then the AFL will rip our 2024 19 & 20 picks off us quicker than an LDU sidestep..

That's how I read it. Our performance will be reviewed next year to see if we still need the 2 pps. Trade them now and lock in the benefit. That's essentially what Gil was saying.

I'm talking moreso about how much damage s**t list management and drafting can do, which stuff like the CCJ trade certainly is. Trading out of the 2019 draft for 2020's crop, which we now see was a risk that blew up in our faces, CCJ seems to be following the same trajectory.
Absolutely. We really should have foreseen that a mysterious virus out of China would lead to a worldwide pandemic, impacting the Under 18 talent leagues and the ability of recruiters to track the development of players when we traded out of the 2019 draft.

Never seen a worse take on this website in all the years Ive been here. Honestly

The reaction to the compensation is exactly why I was fine not getting any more help.

We've been through absolute hell over the last five years to acquire a host of great talent but all we are going to hear going forward is that any success was due to charity.

I know the response will be '**** them' but it will still be frustrating that it will be the opinion of others given what we've had to endure.

If this is a catch all, Carlton and GC also got assistance in 2018 where they could pre-list 2 and 3 VFL players respectively. Carlton traded theirs - Kreuger to Geelong for pick 43 and McAdam to Adelaide as part of the deal for McGovern. Gold Coast took 3 players, which were Corbett, Burgess and Sam Collins.

Also, for the GC trade with Freo where Freo took Johnson, a Freo 2nd rounder also went back to GC and they ended up using that to trade for Ben Long.
I was going down that path last night but that whole period when GC and GWS came in is such a shiteshow...if people want to see what AFL intervention looks like, try tracking down all the implications of these concessions had on the draft for a good 5 years..prelisted players, draft compo's for contracted/uncontracted players to both clubs then the trades that went within, so many layers that l just had to stop at layer one and focus on pure Priority Picks as well as the implications of the GC and GWS concessions had on the 1st round (plus Mini Draft) which one can argue were all priority picks.

Happy to take that period out and concentrate on priority picks?

They are already implying that Sheezel and Wardlaw were charity gifts and the same will be true of our natural pick 2 and our free agency compensation pick this year so the priority picks are just cherries on top.

Draft picks guarantee nothing - even much better ones than these haven’t delivered flags to GWS or Gold Coast. If we succeed it will be due to us getting a lot of other things right.

And if you picked up any fans of Hawthorn, Richmond, Collingwood, Western, Sydney, Melbourne, Eagles or anyone else giving a rats about someone else thinking their flags were in any way tainted by them using the AFL’s equalisation measures - which meant more draft riches than we have ever looked like receiving - you have better eyes than mine.

Whateley plays Gil's audio from last night then says he hates the 'wink and nudge' aspect of priority picks.

Why didn't you say that to Gil last night????????
Before it was wink and nudge, clubs were tanking to meet the clear criteria. The only way the draft alone can equalise is if everything else is removed - free agency and trading, father sons and academies - so it’s a pure race for developing your own flag winning team with the raw materials you can draft each year when your turn comes. Never going to happen, so the league will always need levers to help shift clubs who are stuck at the bottom.

Yep we have to suck it up like the 10 year rule was to 1975 or the Miller Carey-Longmire Nsw Heist

But they have memories like sieves

I can remember a radio interview in Fagans second year and they were hammering on the poor performances

But now we will have the montage before the GF on Saturday and it will have the sexy slo mos of where they have come from but nothing on the nitty gritty of the trading, drafting and father sons of how they got there.

And if they win; likewise, lauded as a football genius to get a Premiership, all bundled up with the Hawks era.

The same will be for us should we have the good fortune in a few years. The snipers will remember this draft if it’s required to justify our success

Some might even throw the word out “brave” when we cut deep in 2020 to get rid of a bunch of proven plodders

Yeah love how Gill shutdown Robbo before he could get his hysterical interjections in...funny how l don't see much of Gills responses on Foxsports/Sen116/theroar/Herald/TheAge social posts...mustn't be good clickbait.

And that Richmond post that made me laugh...can still remember Jack Dyer doing an ad for save our skins!!
