Colm Begley arrived in Australia from Stradbally Laois in Ireland as a Brisbane Lions International Rookie at the end of 2005 after impressing recruiting scouts with his abilities for his local Gaelic football club.
Starting basically from scratch, Begley learnt his new trade playing across half back in the AFLQ competition. While there were plenty of challenges with the transition, his speed, agility and left foot kicking skills developed much quicker than the club could have expected.
"I didn't know all the positions. But I knew enough to get me by, I suppose," Begley said.
"You do spoiling back home but you wouldn't do it to this extent. Back home you'd almost always go for the catch. It's more physical over here and you normally have more room in Gaelic.
"Tackling is different as well - it's a lot more physical.”
Playing for the Suncoast Lions at Fisherman's Road in Maroochydore, Begley kicked his first Australian goal in a win over Morningside.
"It was unfortunate because I think we were down by four or five goals at the time and I couldn't really celebrate the way I wanted to. But my first goal was still a really good feeling," Begley said.
The Irishman stunned both himself and the club in Round 20 of 2006 when he was elevated from the senior list and made his senior debut against the West Coast Eagles – after only an eight month crash course in AFL. In the process, he became the 100th player to don the Lions Guernsey since the club merged in 1997.
He went on to play two senior matches towards the end of the 2006 season which, in turn, gave him greater confidence heading into his second pre-season.
Begley’s accelerated development certainly didn’t slow in 2007. He was given greater responsibility during the pre-season, playing every match in the Lions’ 2007 NAB Cup campaign.
In the process, he managed to sneak forward during the Quarter Final against Geelong and kick a nine-point ‘super goal’ from outside 50 metres.
The super goal scored a $1,000 cheque for his Gaelic club over in Ireland courtesy of NAB.
He went on to play 19 senior matches in 2007 after being elevated from the Rookie List prior to Round 1 to replace retired Lions champion Michael Voss and found his niche as an integral member of the Lions’ back six.
He averaged almost 13 disposals per match and kicked six goals for the season.
It was therefore fitting that the likeable Irishman was announced as the club’s Rookie of the Year at the 2007 Club Champion dinner.

Awesome looking at the video of Lynch. Really attacks the footy, has good skills and will lay into the opposition at any opportunity! His best attribute coming to the saints looks like opposition players might fear him when he gets bigger! We need some mongrel! Reminds me of Hammil but with better skills!
Gee this guy could be anything!
