Great draft for the Saints, Heyne a STEAL, what about Begley?

Wow, I cant believe Heyne fell so far, he is a silky and quick player and a left footer to boot! I had him in the top 10 in the draft.
Big Stanley looks the goods and everyone in the know thinks Tom Lynch could be a modern day Barry Stoneham.
Alistar Smith is a speed machine
So no Carroll but Colm Begley, a good pick up I think, thoughts on the draft?

Well that was a shock must say!! I am listening to SEN and was thinking: Please pick up Sam Isles and not Carrol. Then I hear Colm Begley read out!
I must admit though I was suprised when he was dumped from Brisbane, so excited to see what we can make of the kid.
How does everyone see all our selections, I am not the best person to judge so how do you guys in the know think we did overall?

Very happy with that draft.
Cahill and Heyne are steals. :D
Surprised we went so tall though.

Very happy.
Ecstatic with Heyne.

Never payed attention to Colm Begley, what type of player is he?

I'd say neat left footer who plays mainly across half back. Could release BJ up the ground.

Looks like we drafted for needs. 2 mids, 2 KPPs, 1 ruckmen and whatever Colm is! KP Defender?

Welcome to the team lads, looking forward to watching ya play.

Lynch was born on the same day as me grandad, and 2 days after me. :O

Sucks, it's the first year that the kids drafted are younger than me...I feel so old.

Tom is a good kid. Has massive leadership qualities and won't surprise me if he is a future captain. Nice bloke all round, will fit in very well.

Thrilled with our drafting.

[13] Tom Lynch looks like a great prospect :thumbsu:
[46] Rhys Stanley at our second pick was a bit of a surprise but great to see our ruck stocks bolstered so.
[47] Nick Heyne - I don't think we had planned this selection but he was too big of a steal to ignore :thumbsu:
[62] Alistair Smith - WA kid with speed and fair skills - was surprised we didn't take Lisle at this stage - but I'm sure they know what they are doing
[74] Paul Cahill fills a need great size about him (193cm)
[83] Colm Begley - wow - talk about left field

Sounds like a pretty good result.

Tom Lynch sounds like a good prospect. Versatile KPP and Vic metro co-captain so must be able to play. Shame he is a ranga but I guess you can't have everything. Don't know much about the other picks, although Heyne seems a pretty good pick up by all accounts.

Strange decision to go for Colm Begley and no Nathan Carroll. Looks like no one came out of left field to grab Cousins either.

Begley is a midfielder but I seem to remember him playing out of defence as well. Pretty unlucky to be delisted. I heard Collingwood were going to take him.

Colm Begley arrived in Australia from Stradbally Laois in Ireland as a Brisbane Lions International Rookie at the end of 2005 after impressing recruiting scouts with his abilities for his local Gaelic football club.

Starting basically from scratch, Begley learnt his new trade playing across half back in the AFLQ competition. While there were plenty of challenges with the transition, his speed, agility and left foot kicking skills developed much quicker than the club could have expected.

"I didn't know all the positions. But I knew enough to get me by, I suppose," Begley said.

"You do spoiling back home but you wouldn't do it to this extent. Back home you'd almost always go for the catch. It's more physical over here and you normally have more room in Gaelic.

"Tackling is different as well - it's a lot more physical.”

Playing for the Suncoast Lions at Fisherman's Road in Maroochydore, Begley kicked his first Australian goal in a win over Morningside.

"It was unfortunate because I think we were down by four or five goals at the time and I couldn't really celebrate the way I wanted to. But my first goal was still a really good feeling," Begley said.

The Irishman stunned both himself and the club in Round 20 of 2006 when he was elevated from the senior list and made his senior debut against the West Coast Eagles – after only an eight month crash course in AFL. In the process, he became the 100th player to don the Lions Guernsey since the club merged in 1997.

He went on to play two senior matches towards the end of the 2006 season which, in turn, gave him greater confidence heading into his second pre-season.

Begley’s accelerated development certainly didn’t slow in 2007. He was given greater responsibility during the pre-season, playing every match in the Lions’ 2007 NAB Cup campaign.

In the process, he managed to sneak forward during the Quarter Final against Geelong and kick a nine-point ‘super goal’ from outside 50 metres.

The super goal scored a $1,000 cheque for his Gaelic club over in Ireland courtesy of NAB.

He went on to play 19 senior matches in 2007 after being elevated from the Rookie List prior to Round 1 to replace retired Lions champion Michael Voss and found his niche as an integral member of the Lions’ back six.

He averaged almost 13 disposals per match and kicked six goals for the season.

It was therefore fitting that the likeable Irishman was announced as the club’s Rookie of the Year at the 2007 Club Champion dinner.

I'm pretty happy. Stanley was the inevitable ruckman, nice to hear we got one with a bit of mongrel about him. Surprised Heyne slid, nice pick-up.

Just a tad concerned about what we didn't take. No key backs, despite Max having two years left in an absolute best-case scenario. Passed on Trengove. And I would've liked to see us take Rockliff

Cahill is the one who called Nick Riewoldt a "Bit of a softy" in his interview. He will fit in very nicely:o
But in saying that he was paying him compliments and saying he bases his game partly on him, and once he gets to the club I am sure he will be in awe of Riewoldt!
Good pick too. Just may cop it for those comments!!

Awesome looking at the video of Lynch. Really attacks the footy, has good skills and will lay into the opposition at any opportunity! His best attribute coming to the saints looks like opposition players might fear him when he gets bigger! We need some mongrel! Reminds me of Hammil but with better skills!

Gee this guy could be anything!

I've seen a lot of Rhys Stanley and you'll be pleased that you've got a good one.

Very athletic for a ruckman and can take a mark and has good pace. Rhys played 2 senior SANFL games during the year, before an injury.

From West Adelaide. The last player from us to St Kilda was probably Sam Fisher
