Would be 12, 28 and 44 - assuming everyone else takes a minimum of 3 rookies.

*** This doesn't take into account GC taking the first 5 rookies
*** Also doesn't include Brisbane & Sydney taking rookies as zone recruits - these are optional anyway.

So I guess a wanganeen or ah chee is out of the question then? Did Patrick get picked up?

Gee, it'd be nice to hear the draft if only ROWE WOULD JUST SHUT UP AND STOP TALKING OVER THE ANNOUNCEMENTS!!!!!!!!

that was actually so frustrating, and I was having a pretty bad day so I was taking my anger out on the most pointless things so I like screamed at the radio, fair funny !

Patrick didn't, but Melbourne could be likely to rookie him with their first rookie pick.

There's no reason Wanga's and Ah Chee won't fall to us.

We will use ALL available rookie pick I think, after hearing Rendell go on about how elevations we be better than picks next draft, but really, god knows wtf he's say half the time.

I think it's likely we see a 20 yo+ and a recycled player to us.

If we could snare Wanganeen to go with them, hooray.

Rendell's summary of club's draftees

No.13 - Daniel Talia
DOB: 02/10/91, Height: 194cm, Weight: 89kg
Recruited from: Recruited from: Assumption College/Calder Cannons (VIC)
“Very versatile. Had a fantastic carnival, playing on-ball an key back as a 6-foot-fourer. Very athletic, very focussed, very professional. He’ll fit in beautifully with us.”

All four summaries are there.

I hope the Club has a look at Tom Harms in the rookie draft. He could play that small goal sneak role that we need.

I've had overnight to reflect on the draft, how events unfolded and the players we've selected. Thought I'd share my ideas...

Firstly, this "land of the giants" thing is somewhat overblown. Effectively all we've done is to maintain the status quo. The players we delisted this year were Nick Gill (193cm), Aaron Kite (190cm), Tom Lee (191cm), Greg Gallman (188cm) and Robert Shirley (185cm). These have been replaced by Daniel 'Jenny' Talia (194cm), Jack 'Norman' Gunston (191cm), Sam 'I need a nickname' Shaw (192cm), James 'Jenny2' Craig (195cm) and Brodie Martin (181cm).

That's an overall gain of just 3cm in height, spread across the 5 players. We've replaced 4 talls (if you count Gallman as a tall) and a mid, with 4 talls and a mid.

Secondly, the drafting of Daniel 'Jenny' Talia is not the typical Rendell first round selection story. Dangermouse & Davis were both plucked slightly ahead of where they were expected to go in the draft. The big surprise was how highly we rated these kids, well ahead of many who were actually taken ahead of them in the draft.

Jenny's story bears more similarities to the drafting of Shaun McKernan.
  • Both players were known to be highly rated by the Crows.
  • Neither player was strongly linked to Adelaide though, because they were expected to be gone before our selection - Talia was expected to go at 11 (Melbourne) or 12 (Carlton).
  • Both fell through to our selection when the clubs ahead of us took an unexpected option (Melbourne & Carlton both opted for more mids).
  • In both cases, Rendell couldn't call out the name & number quick enough.
  • In both cases it was pants down, laps around the table with tears of joy in the recruiter's eyes.

I stated earlier in the week (following the release of the Burgatron) that I wasn't keen on taking James Craig with our 2nd selection (#29) in the draft. However, I have no such qualms about drafting him at #61. Considering he was the standout ruckman at the National Championships, albeit in a draft notoriously weak in quality ruckmen, he was the 4th ruck selected - following Gawn (#34), Vardy (#42) and Fitzpatrick (#50).

Craig is reported to have a prodigious leap. This will help him to overcome his lack of height at the centre bounces. However, it does nothing to assist him in the ruck contests around the ground. In those contests it is height, strength and skill which determine the outcome. Leap is not a factor, unless he's planning on being the 3rd man up, leaping over the two competing ruckmen. I suspect he'll end up like Ryder - handy in the centre square, next to useless at any other ruck contests (Ryder's athleticism means he is also able to involve himself in the game at other times as well).

Craig's best hope is probably to reinvent himself as a KPP player, at either end of the ground. He can pinch-hit in the ruck, but I don't see it becoming his full-time occupation.

Correct. He'll need to add a few strings to his bow because I don't think he'll make it as a ruck full time. It'll depend how he develops, needs to try to win more ball around the ground and get a bit more mobile.

I want to give Anton Woods 170cm a go. He is good, its just how short he is being the issue

Have to agree there, this kid can really play. :thumbsu:

To quote Mark Twain......

It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog

I'm not sure why I consider you the expert on this, Stabby, but are they doing podcasts at ALL at 5AA anymore?
