Every year there are draft smokies taken from outside the usual TAC/SANFL/WAFL/QAFL leagues.

e.g. Justin Sweeney was plucked from the Mornington Peninsula League by St Kilda in 2005.

Does anyone know of any local league players likely to be looked at in November.

I have one - Ashley Hogan from Doncaster. His team had a quiet year but this hulking centremen cum centre half forward dominated play. His core would put Billy Brownless to shame and his work ethic is of the highest standard. Essendon are looking at him seriously.

Chris Irving (Seaford) - Mornington Peninsula Nepean League (Peninsula Division)

Seaford have won 3 consecutive premierships. Chris has won the Best & Fairest in 2008 and 2009. As well as the league best and fairest in 2008 and 2009.
He also got named captain in the Team of the Year in a pretty strong competition.
The only sticking point is he is 22.

Have heard a few whispers regarding AFL scouts.

With the shallow draft and the GC coming players like this could be looked at alot more closely.

WC will be all over him then! :p
Awesome comedy gold from the Swannies boys. Aren't they keen on a West Coast ruckman who currently struggles to get a game because of Naitanui. I wonder what pick they'd give the Eagles for him - a lot better than what we'll get for Seaby.

When your team actually develops a new ruckman from scratch and not recycle a ruckman past their prime like the last 4 or 5 they have had then feel free to joke about others teams players. Lets see how your boys go in the next 3 or 4 years - Good Luck:thumbsu::thumbsu:

I guess this guy can't be classified as a smokey in this case as he's played TAC Cup all year and even been to the draft camp, but reading all the Phantom Drafts, Dylan Roberton hasn't been named in any yet. A good size (190cm) really good skills, and from the DC results, great endurance (14.6 in the beep) really hope he gets picked up.

And as for the person that named Chris Irving, very good call, i'm a pretty avid Frankston YCW supporter, and so have obviously seen him play against us a few times and the guy is just an out and out gun.

Daniel Currie, Mike Pyke and Jesse White (can be used in the ruck)

I'm guessing you must be the average stereotypical West Coast Battler... Battle on Son!

Steady on, I was only poking fun! Hence the ":p". Naita's a great talent, and you're lucky to have him. He is, however, very raw at present, and only a fool would deny that.

However, I do object to you labelling Jolly and Seaby as "past their prime", which you seem to have done. Our other recent ruckmen? Chambers? Well, he never had a prime. Doyle? Drafted, would have been great if he didn't break down constantly. Goodes? Need I say more? Everitt of course I'll give you, but he was simply a last ditch effort at getting a flag. Unfortunately a year too late, but them's the breaks. Hardly trying to build a side around a recycled player. Nice try, but fail.

I dare say that was probably the point, i.e. his race is the main reason he's being hyped. Irony.

At 192cm and 84kg, Sam Reid is and a similar type of athletic footballer to Majak Daw (193cm, 84kg). Reid averages 5 kicks (3 effective) and 4 handballs (3 effective) per game yet went to draft camp. As expected he tested pretty well this week and is a good chance to go in the ND. Reid’s been hyped by many pundits as a future star for his athletic ability, the same sort of thing that excites people about Daw.
So is Majak’s ethnicity the reason behind all the media hype? Perhaps; it is a great story and i reckon all would agree full credit to the young man…but is it the reason why he is a draft smoky? No, it’s a cherry on top.

Sorry, I mean hyped on BigFooty. He got an invite to SS on his athletic attributes, but the reason there's a considerably long thread on him on BF coupled with YouTube clip (complete with 50 Cent soundtrack), rather than a short thread or just a few mentions in more general threads, is because he's black.

Agreed, very similar thinking to my last point and it wasn't necessarily directed at you. There is no doubt everyday people are drawn by his flashes, potential and uniqueness...but AFL recruiting is so sophisticated that a player couldn't possibly be considered simply because he is black.

I'll disagree with you on that. It happens. I personally think every player should be judged equally based on footy ability, but I know of indigenous guys in particular being evaluated by some clubs more highly because of that characteristic.

I do think this thread has gotten way out of control however, some of the comments are a tad harsh. The Majak Daw story is a good one and it's through hard work that he's gotten to this point and if he does get an opportunity in the draft he'll need to keep working hard to achieve his next goal of playing AFL footy. As will all the draftees - white, black, red or green! :D

....Apparantly Collingwood is looking at Irvo....

Chris Irving from Seaford Footy Club (MPNFL) is a gun....Collingwood is looking at him....he would put a lot of current AFL players to shame...Paul Johnston of Melbourne for one!
