Re: What will we do with our 1st round draft pick?

When was the first rebuild??

To my recollection we haven't done a rebuild since the 1980's!!

Trading away Ottens is not a rebuild!

My meaning is that the first rebuild didn't work so we need another.... ie. a second rebuilb

Re: What will we do with our 1st round draft pick?

i still dont dont see what trengove can give us???
i can but i dont think pick 10 will do the trick. its likely we will be in a bidding war with other sides.

a few things come into it. is he worth a pick 10 is he a long term prospect. and what is likely to be available to us at pick 10 and will he be better.

in all honesty trengove will be a long term prospect a potential 200 game player still only 20 with two yrs development already put in.

if we think him a better prospect than any potential pick 10 i can see no reason why we would not have a go for him.

set the criteria in what we think hes worth and with what we are prepared to pay. if we get him so be it if we dont nothing lost.its only if we pay to much or potentially miss a far better player in the nd that it hurts.

Don't see the Trengove love. Bit of a 'tweener and looks like a bigger mcguane. And **** me the sooner that bloke is off the list the better.
In regards to what other teams are offering for O'Meara and co on the main board. Deledio and Foley is way over what others are offering. Would offer Foley, & compo for O'Meara plus Post & Edwards for the 3rd (Grundy/Kennedy or Crouch if 2nd team doesn't take him). Would people be keen on this?

In reality, none of the top clubs will offer up stars when playing in finals and bottom sides don't want to take the risk by sound of it (obviously thats supporters)

If GWS don't trade for best offer they lose out and can't keep players. Our big 4 could turn into a big 6 or 7.

From what I have seen, enough IMO, Trengrove is not near good enough. In fact I don't think he will make it as a defender at AFL. He is better as a second ruckman but these days clubs want rucks that can play different roles which Trengrove has not proved capable of yet and is unlikely IMO.

You, only have to see the likes of NN development that we need to send reconasance missions to Fiji or wherever his ability has come from;) regarding Rucks

To me, based on the video, there are far better prospects( not Rucks) in the draft of genuine ability at 10 that can help out Cotch and co going forward and boost the quality output of the list,if our recruiting dept can get it right, which appears to be a massive if!!

Re: What will we do with our 1st round draft pick?

Last year everybody was ready to delist Rance & Vickery

Trengove is quality & will become an excellent player in the next 2-3 years, The kid is only 20 and has 20 games to his name for a kpd thats 197cm.

He is playing in a crap team thats has internal issues & wants to come home ................ We should not miss this chance to grab him if possible

I see Trengove as giving our team the ultimate flexability of useing him at CHB,CHF,RUCK with Ty Vickery in the team.

When he adds another 5-6 kgs onto his frame this kid will also be able to handle the ruckman that go foward.

Whilst i have always been in favour of useing our first 3 picks every year, This year i wouldnt mind trading all 3 picks to be able to get players under 21 that we so desperately need.

On a different note what are peoples opinion on shaun hampson, I have never been impressed with him & dont believe that he will become a very good ruckman & would be intrested to know others opinions am i missing something in hampson that others can see & would he be worth our 2nd round pick this year given that its a shallow draft ?

Re: What will we do with our 1st round draft pick?

i think that the footy dept will go into the draft with a list of 20 or so players that they and most other clubs are looking at..they will then pick someone off the back of pyschometric testing and pick some unknown.

we just desperately need some more players in the 22-25 bracket, ruckman, midfielders, KPPs...i dont really care, just do it

Re: What will we do with our 1st round draft pick?

Our biggest problem atm is our ruck stock's. Surely we will get a ruckman. No use having a great midfield if you dont get first use of the footy. Zac Clarke will be a good ruckman next year and for the 7-8 years after that. His ahead of Griffin that's why Freo are playing him first and might even play as a Ruck/Forward when Sandilands comes back.

It's true that having a good Ruckman makes it easier to be a mid at the stoppages but we are far from having a great midfield. Our depth is diabolical and we have a very poor balance. By all means work like a maniac at getting Zachary over from freo but midfield has to be the priority for the next couple of years.

Re: What will we do with our 1st round draft pick?

Wouldn't have an issue on using our 1st pick (~12) on Z Clarke at Freo and their 2nd rounder... Or for Trengove and Port's 2nd rounder if we can get it done...

If not, best available....

Re: What will we do with our 1st round draft pick?

I would like to see us use our first round pick (and our 2nd round pick for the Tambling trade) to get one of the first two picks for the GWS mini draft. Failing that I would like to see us use our first round pick in the draft unless something really good is up for offer at trade time.

Re: What will we do with our 1st round draft pick?

I think we'll keep it and use it on the best available.

I also think that we would give it up for Clark or Clarke, probably with something else on top for Mitch.

Re: What will we do with our 1st round draft pick?

We really need to keep this pick and use it on best available. We are currently the 4th worst side in the comp. Probably worse. We need to look at where our star players have come from. We have used our first round pick last 7 years and look like having 6 star quality to very good level players from it. Deledio, Riewoldt, Cotchin, Vickery, Martin and Conca. These guys didn't come via trades. As much as people hate Wallace his decision to not trade first round picks has helped us immensely. We shouldn't deviate from this plan until we make the top 8.

On a side note has anyone else seen Caro's article about Tippett's contract having a clause in it to trade him for a 2nd round pick at end of 2012 to the club of his choice? LOL Get on it Blair Hartley :D

Re: What will we do with our 1st round draft pick?

How would people feel if the best available mid was Toby Greene who is only 180cm?

He fits our needs almost perfectly, He is very hard at it, clearance machine, a ball magnet with pace and he is composed and always seems to create extra time to get rid of the ball effectively. Probably the best comparison I've heard is Matty Boyd.

Point being, is that if Tyson, Kavanagh, Grigg, Hoskin-Elliot, and Buntine are gone he is in my opinion the best available of the remaining mids.

Re: What will we do with our 1st round draft pick?

^ He really impressed me in the u18 cup, was easily Vic metro's best along with Tyson.

Those you listed probs won't make it past pick 10.

Seems a bit small but Ablett is only 182cm(?), he could still be growing as well.

Re: What will we do with our 1st round draft pick?

Selwood is only 182 as well. Libatore Jnr is only 180 and is a similar type, Same with M.Murphy.

I think the main issue would be we have a fair few already in our 22 who are on the short side. Foley, Nahas, Conca....It may make us vulnerable. But if Greene is clearly the best available we may have to bite the bullet.

Sam Kerridge is one to look out for. AIS kid from Mildura, strangely left out of the of the VC team in the champs and has the burden of playing for the lowly Bendigo Pioneers who has only 1 win for the season.

An explosive player who wins alot of the ball and clearances, tackles well, being strong overhead makes him a regular goal kicker, disposal is neat and is a good size at 189cm.

He may just be one of those FJ left field "What The Eff!?" type selections. It's hard to gauge where he'll fall given he was left out of the champs.

My feeling is Toady that GWS will take Coniglio/Patton/Wingard as well as Longer at 5. I think the next tier has 6 good mids in Tyson/Grigg/Buntine/Kavanagh/Hoskin-Elliot/Greene. That's 10 players and we have pick 10. My hope is they take Elton in the top 10 as a KPF partner for Patton. That means two of the six slip and we can choose our preferred option.

I'm in the camp that Foley is tradeable for the right price so would be happy to get Greene if that's the case. Really hoping/praying Kerridge lasts to second round. Would really bolster our midfield with him and one of those other top 10 mids.

Re: What will we do with our 1st round draft pick?

Really like the idea of bolstering our midfield as our depth is currently pathetic. We have the stars in Martin, Cotch and Lids but we now need quality depth to add to Conca in order for us to become a good side.

Sounds good to me... but thats on the assumption that we finish 14th. Remember we play Adelaide in Rd 23 and the winner of that will probably move to 13th and recieve Pick 12!! A high possibility considering Hardwick want to boost his win/loss record for this year.

If we in all honesty go out there and win a meaningless game and lose 2 positions in the draft which could be the difference between a gun and an average player we may as well pack it in. We do that every year win 1 more game than we can to qualify for priority picks.

2009: Could have had Martin, Griffiths, Fyfe but we just didn't quite qualify.
2010: Could have had Conca, Batchelor and Heppell but just didn't quite qualify again.
2011: Could have had pick 4 and 10 but nope we are happy with being near the bottom with 1 pick LOL

I know, it's ridiculous!! But I can see it happening again... winning worthless games just so Hardwick and the club can harp on about improving from last year, momentum into next season, building our winning culture etc etc. All the crap we have heard before, which as ultimately changed nothing and has only cheated us out of additional first round draft picks. I mean seriously... all this pain and we can't even bottom out properly!! Not that it will matter anyway... we had pick 6 last year and used it on a player not rated in the top 20 (as much as I like Conca). Pick 10 or 12 won't matter this year as I'm sure FJ will have another left field special up his sleeve... no doubt hiding behind a tree somewhere as we speak!!!

I must be in the minority that really likes Conca as a prospect. Without a pre-season started the season off as well as Heppell. Has just tailed off and that's what people remember. However, we should have both and it be a non-issue anyway. Or we could have taken Conca and Darling or Conca and Gorringe.

I understand the whole trying to build a winning culture but at the end of the day u need the cattle to do that. We don't have that. We could have finished 3rd last with a priority at 4 and had 10 as well. Instead we just have 10. Effectively we have missed Fyfe, Heppell and Longer (ruck). And we lack depth. Wonder why.

Spot on. As I said, I really like Conca as a prospect also, but at the end of the day he wasn't a top 6 prospect and as you rightly point out, if we were smarter we could have had both Conca and Heppel in the first round. Anyway I really hope we give ourselves the best possible advantage going into the draft/tade week ths year and pray FJ and co can nail it.

Re: What will we do with our 1st round draft pick?

So Hardwick plays guys out of position, "rests" certain key players and makes all sorts of odd moves. The players on the field, are awake to this, they're not stupid, they can clearly see their match committee is trying to lose the match. Anyway, turns out they play well, and at 3 quarter time are up by two goals against the Swans.

What do you do? Tell them to lose?
Rubbish.

Of the recent premiership teams, Cats, Pies, Hawks, Swans, Eagles, Port Adelaide, how many of them tanked? Did any of them have a number 1 pick in fact?

Go out and try and win every game, how about some respect for the jumper, the club, the pride and the fans. That's how a great club is formed.
