Ok. There's a key terminology error you're consistently making. A key position player is one that plays FB, CHB, CHF and FF. Third talls aren't KPPs. Otten, Shaw and Cheney are not KPPs. At this stage Lever probably could play CHB at a pinch.

We can't go into a season with only two. If we don't get Collins (which I don't expect us too) we'll pick up a mature ager in the rookie draft as back up.

I think we should pick up a mature ager.

But I think the club holds hope that Shaw will be a KPD, not a third tall. He has the size (as does Otten now), it just depends whether his game can adapt.

You need two KPDs and we have three.

You need nine quality mids. We have maybe four.

I think the need is pretty obvious.
Easily more than 4 though.

Um, Sloane, B Crouch, Douglas, Thompson, Laird

Possibly Smith

We do need some to step up from:
Lyons, M Crouch, Ellis-Yolmen, Atkins, Grigg, Knight, Gore, Hampton

Van Berlo, Mackay, for depth if they can regain form

Easily more than 4 though.

Thompson will probably retire next year. Even with your counting, we still have only 5 quality mids. As Kristof noted, we need 8 or 9.

I wouldn't be holding my breath waiting for Lyons, CEY, Atkins or Grigg to become the quality players we need them to be. M Crouch will be OK, but not a superstar. I like the look of Knight. Haven't seen enough of Gore & Hampton to know what they're capable of.

Ok, says Danoz. AFL is responding to some clubs claims that teams with earlier picks have agreed for some reason, not to bid on players who they would want to pick, with early picks.
Obviously we have a real problem with collusion and if any clubs were colluding not to bid on players, we would come down terribly, terribly hard on that
Ok, says Danoz. So the AFL is aware that this could be happening.
The question is whether you can prove that obviously
Ah, says Danoz. The inevitable out clause. "Look, they may have colluded, but there's nothing to prove it" says the AFL after Melb and Ess mysteriously don't bid on Hopper or Kennedy, leaving Carlton to open the bidding with pick 8, allowing GWS to pick up top 5 players for a pittance.

But collusion was all a-ok when MelTank did it with GWS/Gold Coast to score Viney for a second rounder. Nothing in that at all:rolleyes:.
That's my point. They won't want to punish GWS so they'll let it slide.

I won't be looking at Pick 9 as a "dangerfield replacement" because he isn't.

All we can hope is that boofheads like Rowie don't push the comparison
.
I'm sure it'll become a big topic of conversation, particularly if he only becomes simply a good player

just a gut feel, i think we may rate Milera ahead of Francis
Why ? ......Francis in draft watchers is sliding ....yet he has done nothing to warrant a change of opinion

If we said Milera over Francis two months ago, there would have been a melt down ?

Depends a lot on how Menzel and Gore turn out too though, if 2 of the 3 turn out to be genuine 200 game A-Graders, then we're probably pretty happy at the end of the day.
Didn't help Doughty and Van Berlo :p

Not too many have high hopes for Gore ......but watch if Menzel fizzles

Agreed, from what admittedly little I've seen, I would definitely prefer Francis over Milera.

They didn't think finding a backup for talia was worth the late 3rd round pick we could have gotten his brother for, so I don't think we would use a first round pick.
The word was that, despite his size, M. Talia's best work was when playing the floating 3rd tall role and he wasn't great one on one. As we're more than covered for this type, the club passed.

Think both are great gets .....Milera a bit more "X" factor ......Francis that big bodied utility / potential midfielder

You'd have to be happy with either

I didn't say 200 game B-Graders...
Who defines "A" or "B" ? .......doesn't 200 games of AFL class you as an "A" grader

"A" Grader v Superstar

I'm confused as to why teams would bother bidding for academy players like Mills, Hopper or Kennedy. What's the point? GWS, Sydney and Brisbane have willingly traded down and stockpiled a bunch of later picks as currency so that they can trade them for when a team bids on their players.

So then why should other teams bother bidding if these academy teams will be able to get these players anyway? What difference does it make if Mills goes at 33 for Sydney? If anything, it also bumps the later draft up as well, as teams like Sydney will start passing earlier because they intended to use all those picks to bid for academy players, not on new players.

And I also find it annoying that our Pick 9 will be bumped down so that he won't be in that top 10 photo. Seems like we'll never get a true top 10 pick.

I for one have very high hopes for Gore. Meets all criteria for a quality inside mid.
Looks to be a Brad Ebert type .....just not sure on the Gut Running aspect ?

If no team bids a first round .....Sydney, GWS, and Brisbane will get the first round player as a 2nd or even 3rd round pick, like the old father/son.

Need a bid to keep the value of the Academy player correct

I really hope this doesn't happen ......it didn't with Father Son picks
Has that been confirmed that Academy players bid on in the top 10, will go up on stage as part of the official top 10

1. Because if, for example, GWS have to pay a lot more for Hopper and Kennedy, they will have less opportunity to pick up players at the lower end of the draft, meaning if they'd intended to get another couple of academy kids, they may not be able to.
2. Because the bidding teams may think the academy player is the best/better player they can get at that pick. It won't happen, but if someone thought Mills was worth pick 1, but Sydney didn't want to pay that much, then they bidding team would get him.
It's all about making sure clubs don't get A-grade players for nothing, like everyone else was allowed to do in the past.

Does it really matter? We'll still be getting the 9th best "live" pick, regardless of where it falls.
