For possibly the 500th time this off season, we're not going to delist contracted players, so stop suggesting it. Here are the candidates



Struck out the only ones that are 100% not a part of this conversation, barring utter catastrophe. Everyone else there is at risk, some more than others - Harry Dear f.ex is now our third choice, first backup KPF with Jpod gone, and the only alternative with McGovern more a third up type. I'd expect us not to draft tall again until next year, but even if we do go tall this year he's probably safe for another 2 year deal, though not necessarily so if he has a dog of a year in the SANFL.

Anyone in the category "half back flanker slash outside mid" by virtue of pace or kick is also on notice thanks to trade week, that includes Grigg, Wigg and Jaensch. It would also include Mackay if not for that idiotic contract we're now stuck with, so the only thing at risk for him is spending the last 3 years of that deal in the SANFL.

If we draft a new inside mid with 9 or 13 this year, it's essentially the end of Lyons at Adelaide, even though I do expect Thompson to retire, and van Berlo to be 50/50 at this stage. If the next draft class pans out as predicted I can see us making as many as four live picks, perhaps even five if we trade well.

Because delisting contracted players has never happened in the history of football?

You genuinely think them cutting their losses on Mackay a year early is LESS likely than delisting an All Australian junior who was a second round draft pick after two years?

How ridiculous.

There are a minimum eight players before Wigg in the delisting queue.

Read an article somewhere that Balic when asked about moving interstate if drafted outside Victoria how he'd handle it said something like " We are a very close family but I THINK I'll be OK with it".....alarm bells started going off right then for me.

Sounds like draft tampering to me... What if one of the SA boys like Milera said that.....

When are these players going to realise that it is a national game, if you want to get drafted and play AFL you have to accept that it may not be in your home state. Hope he goes to a WA team...

When are these players going to realise that it is a national game, if you want to get drafted and play AFL you have to accept that it may not be in your home state. Hope he goes to a WA team...

And also there is actually no such things as those positions in modern day football anyway ...there are different forward set ups with talls deep and high etc

The key thing I guess is who did he play on and if it wasn't Franklin or roughead which I know it wasn't then he definitely wasn't playing the modern day equivalent of CHB

No chance of Melbourne taking Collins. They've got some very talented young KPDs, defence is the least of their problems.

Port was an example, the point is you are not just spooling brisbanes party and stopping them getting a bonus. Anything you take from Brisbane goes to a club further up the ladder, so why help a club that is in a better position to spite Brisbane, when we gain nothing. If Brisbane can't afford the bid you will get a player who will resent you for stealing him away from his family because he had been told he had a free pass to stay.

I think the whole point is we may get the player we want. If we rate Hipwood as the best player at 9 or 13 we should chase him because Brisbane may not rank him as highly and pass. They may prefer to take quantity this year (5 players) rather than 2 high quality players and have no decent picks left.

Secondly, you can't worry about stealing a player away from their family, otherwise we'd only draft SA boys. Why would it be any different for academy kids vs non-academy kids?

Next years draft is full of mids. This is the year teams are going to look for kpp. Essendon, melbourne and carlton are all in need of kpp. Pick 3 is critical. If melbourne go for weideman or curnow essendon will take parish at 4 and then the kpp melbourne didnt take. Melbourne last year drafted petracca and brayshaw they also have viney, tyson, vince, jones and trengove. They could go parish but i think their move up the order is to gain a kpf to partner hogan as they lack in this area. They have kpd in mcdonald and garland who plays tall/small but after losing frawley they are limited in options. If its true about milera and francis being flight risks i cant see these 3 clubs choosing them over oliver

The more I think about it, the more I realise that it just doesn't make any sense that Francis last until pick 9. I just can't see it. Too good a player to slide that far down and will get picked up before our pick.

You do realise Sando is the under 18s AIS academy coach. He would have much more knowledge than most. Probably only behind the recruiters (in terms of knowledge of the players).

He may not have a great idea of who the clubs will select though.

yes I do realise he was gifted that position. Yes I also realise it is appalling the AFL would hand him the keys to the best juniors in the country given his background...

It's almost like a club with a massive pharmaceutically delivered peptide scandal issue still hanging over their heads handing the keys over to a former pharmacist with a history of running teams that have a significant drug culture...

He spent 3 years in AFC list management meetings and is the coach of the AIS squad, I'd say on the subject of who we will draft he would know more than anybody on this board, unless there are people who have been in our list management meetings after Sando was sacked.

Is that one of the list management meetings where we moved out our best outside mid in order to trade in another inside mid even though we had almost no quality outside mids and had a stack of inside mids?
Was he part of that?

The bidding on Academy players makes the draft a bit more interesting, but the AFL need to bite the bullet and allow draft day trades.
Imagine a bid on an academy player followed by 5 minutes of extreme trading! If you could trade picks, future picks and just drafted players, it would make the whole event seriously exciting!!

Imagine Melbourne draft Weidemann - the one player the Crows are desperate for. We draft Francis and Melbourne had drafted Milera as well. We turn to Melbourne before our last pick and swap our pick 13 and Francis for Weidemann, then effectively using our pick 13 for whoever Melbourne want - which was H McKay.

Melbourne swap Weidemann for McKay and Francis. They walk away with McKay, Francis and Milera. We get the player we wanted most - Weidemann.

It can only happen IF the picks work in a certain order and if McKay is available at pick 13, but you don't know until the pick is about to occur - hence the need for draft day trades.

Now, before everyone shouts me down about giving up Francis and McKay for Weidemann, it is just an example of how the draft day trade could work, not what I would actually do.

Apparently rioli interviewed badly to interstate clubs. He was doing his schooling in melbourne and had settled there after leaving the territory. Hawthorn said to him if he was there at their pick they would take him. The idea of playing with buddy wouldve been appealing too. However we had a strong team and had some great indigenous leaders in mcleod and johncock. Disappointed we didnt take the punt on him and back our people in to make him stay here. Patrick left anyway.

NBA have this concept and it makes for an exciting draft experience from viewer's perspective but AFL just introduced future pick trading. Next step is trading future picks that are more than a yea in advance and bringing in the restrictions on those picks (e.g. Adelaide traded next year's 2nd round draft pick and could have had top 30 protection on it and the protection reduces on it for the following year if the pick did not get passed to GWS).

I know, I know too much too soon for the AFL! I'm a massive follower of the NBA (Love my Spurs - Ginobli the left handed genius that he is) so I follow the NBA draft as well. Love the New York booing every year and the draft day trade scenarios. All exciting really.

Hopefully we get to the point where we can start doing that sort of thing as well.

Oh I definitely agree - I wouldn't make that swap.

But if Ogilvie had clearly identified Weidemann as our top prospect and thought him THE best player in the draft, then I could see the club doing it.

It's what would make the draft day trades fun. The possibilities, the opinions, the wailing and gnashing of teeth! All great fun.

So basically draft tampering without outright saying it. Clever way to do it and will become more common.

Until a gun does it so they can stay in Adelaide and then the AFL will come down hard on it...
