Lever is never going to play CHB??

Drafted as a KPD and considered pre-injury to be the best KPD of his draft year?

195cm and the frame to carry 100kgs?

Why the absolute hell is he NOT going to be a key defender?

There is absolutely no sense to your opinion on this at all. He may not be a purely nullifying key back but he absolutely will have the frame and athleticism to play tall.

I've said it before, but Lever playing exclusively as a defender is a massive waste of talent and we would be idiots to do so.

Lever can offer so much more. He may well very line up at CHB, but I see him playing very much like Harry Taylor does in that he plays all over the shop and moves out of this lockdown defender role often.

I get the feeling Levers final position will depend a little on our team needs. If we have 2 more than capable KPDs, we may prefer him as a 3rd tall, similar to how Matthew Scarlett finished his career as a 3rd tall, despite being regarded as one of the best full backs to play the game. However if we say drafted Francis as a gun 3rd tall and Hartigan remained mediocre, Lever may end up being our 2nd tall.

Jeff mate get of the Collins train .......WILL NOT HAPPEN !!!!!!!!!!

We recruited our CHB last draft ......how many goes do you want? ......club HAS NEVER in two drafts, drafted for the same KP role ...and certainly not in defense
If they think Collins is the best player available, then there's a chance they'll take him. Lever is adaptable enough that we could play Collins, Lever and Talia.

Very similar to taylor. I see kelly playing a nathan bassett role too. Was very impressed with his games early in the year. We are forming a very good young backline.

Lever sees the field too well, has the timing and athleticism to hunt the ball in a more mobile role. he's going to create out of the 3rd tall or push up the ground into the rotations

There is little chance he'll be wasted as a KPD

Francis is closer to Hart.

Lever shouldn't just be a lockdown key defender - but we have that in Talia (and Brown, fwiw). Lever will take the secondary opposition KPF, smash him and create from defense.

Really?

I watched Francis's highlights and the only thing I think they share is their hair color.

I've seen Goddard mentioned previously and think that is closer.

Walker/Jenkins/Francis up forward is quite nice, if we somehow get Milera with Betts and Cameron, thats up there with the best.
I think we have other options in defence.

Think (especially given Pyke coming over) he might play that Jeremy McGovern/Easton Wood roaming interceptor role which has become important to a mobile defensive game plan. He's very mobile and a lethal intercept mark already and would add most value to us here as an interceptor/rebounding playmaker imo rather than trying to squeeze him into our forward line which is already stacked and has Menzel to come in still

I totally agree. Playing Francis as a half back rather than as 1 of the 3 tall defenders, frees him up to play up forward if Tex, Jenkins or Lynch get injured during a game. Then we'd still have our 3 talls in defense without having to disrupt that.

He has huge versatility at either end. I think the 191-192cm players are now in vogue as long as they can mark and kick well. Perfect for team defense because you don't become too lumbering but guys that can read the ball well in the air and intercept mark or spoil are such a weapon. I'd love to see Francis (if we got him) and Lever freed up to play these roles. Makes the defense almost impenetrable. Particularly with Talia and Brown being awesome lock down defenders on their dangerous opponents and Hartigan taking the 2nd tall.

I don't get this Francis reluctance. If he is there at 9 and we consider him best available, then we are taking him. If our #9 pick ends up having the career that Goddard has had, you take it every time. BJ comes across as a bit of a knob but he is a very very good player that can play in a variety of roles. Francis is young enough to develop his inside game more and develop his accountability so that he develops into more than Goddard.

Kid can play, has star written all over him and is a local lad. What's there not to like?

Hart has beautiful football knowledge - he was a tremendous intercept marker and a much better spoiler than you would think for his size because he positioned himself in play so well. Plus, he offered beautiful run and receive. Both of those things remind me (of the video I've seen) of Francis.

Plus, yeah - ginger.

Really interesting article. The biggest issue obviously is that injury concern. What if we use pick 13 on him and he has a flare up in round 1 2016? With most kids a bad injury after you get them isn't the end of the line. An ACL for instance can put them back, but many go ahead with no issues. With Burton, a hotspot in the leg or another fracture etc... and he could be pretty much done for good. That is a huge risk with so much other talent available.

He really is the epitome of a 'swing for the fences' type selection. If he heals well, he could play 10 years of footy at a level above almost everyone else in the draft and prove a steal.
If it doesn't, well, thats what we all fear really.

I suspect it will depend on who else is available at pick 13. If we have someone we rate highly still available (a H McKay or Milera etc...) then we will overlook him. If the guys we really want - maybe Curnow, Francis, McKay, Milera are gone, he could be the option.

Going to be a very interesting night!
