Yeah this is how I'm leaning too. The only caveat is that I wouldn't go with a Milera / Tucker combo. If we do take Milera at 9, assuming Francis and Oliver are both long gone, I'd be more inclined to be taking someone more inside (Mathieson) or a medium / tall (Burton) at 13 than another outside type in Tucker.

Seriously though, if we jag Francis or Oliver at pick 9 I'll be too busy jerkin it in a quiet corner of the convention centre to even care too much about our second pick. :straining:
I hope theres alot of corners:drunk:

Is it absolutely locked in that Carlton will take Weitering instead of Schache?

They butchered (haha... Butcher. Perfect.) their last chance of having a gun key forward by trading Josh Kennedy and it gets funnier by the Coleman.

I know their defence SUCKS but their forward lines sucks just as much, if not more.

I think from what I've read Weitering is the clear number 1 pick and best in the draft, Schache is only going top 2 cause Brisbane just absolutely have to pick a key forward.

In Brisbane's advantage Schache outwardly saying he wants to play for Brisbane, in part because his late father played for them.

"
McKay’s got plenty of upside, but at the moment, his lack of consistency and poor kicking prove to be serious risks.

Best case scenario, McKay could play in a similar role to Drew Petrie. He takes the ball at the highest point, he can get around the ground and he can pinch hit in the ruck.

Worst case scenario, McKay could be a Tyrone Vickery second forward. In either case, McKay looks more likely to be a complimentary forward rather than a 50-60 goal a year threat at his peak."

Not with a top 10 pick thank you.
This must be a hell of a weak draft if you guys are bringing out the lube thinking we might draft him.
He's probably better than or equal of shache at the same age , be careful writing off 17 yr old key forwards or any 17 yr old 200cm player

Francis - Milera = A+
Francis - Oliver = A
Milera - Oliver = A
Curnow - Oliver = A
Curnow - Milera = A
Milera - Burton = B
Milera - McKay = B
McKay - Mathieson = C

That my rough guide for everyone!

Very very keen to get Milera - would grab him at 9, probably even over Francis. His level of class is a must for our side. We have enough 'gut runners' and enough 'grunt', our team needs more class.

The Milera - Oliver combination would be exceptional. We would add some toughness to replace Danger, and some extra class. Combine Milera with Menzel, Hampton and Seedsman and we have a team that has pace and class, rather than just one that tries really hard.

adjunct to last message:
Last year everyone was identifying a pick for our first .....now it seems we'll grab one of the leftovers at #13  ........NO NO NO ....#13 IS OUR FIRST pick
Wouldn't be too worried. I have full confidence the AFC team won't be in the corner with all the Bigfooty guys after pick 9 and be too out of breath to call out who we want at 13....(maybe not Harper)

No No No .......would you be saying this if we hadn't got pick 9 for Danger

WE HAVEN"T relegated our first pick this year (#13) to a 2nd round pick

#13 is still technically the clubs first pick and should be treated as such

I said the other night that unintentionally this forum was treating #13 as a 2nd round pick

Pick 9 is compensation for Dangerfield .....and will in future be judged harshly as part of the Dangerfield deal

Pick 13 is our first pick and needs to be judged equally as hard as the Ebert v Dangerfield choices of previous years ......i know i certainly will

I won't be looking at Pick 9 as a "dangerfield replacement" because he isn't.

All we can hope is that boofheads like Rowie don't push the comparison.

Well, they'd have about six minutes

I just don't see us taking another key defender with a first round pick.

He'll get picked up by someone else though, looks like a solid player
If we stick by the "best available" rule and we do rate him highly, then we'd take him.

He wouldn't be useless for us, having Talia, Lever and Collins roaming the back line would be massive. Lever and Collins look both to be good defenders that have attacking sides to their games that could compliment the shutdown roles Talia and Luke Brown play as well as having guys like Seedsman, Hampton, Jaensch and Laird taking the ball out from half back.

Yep, if we rate him that highly, we'll grab him.

Interesting that one recruiter rates him so high. We know Gold Coast slipped in the draft because they knew he guy they wanted would be there later, could it be them?

Certainly looks like an extremely solid KPD prospect.

Not sure it'd be Gold Coast, they already have May, Kolo, and Thompson plus guys like McKenzie, C. Cameron, Leslie and Tape

I'd far rather we stock up on quality mids than quality tall lockdown defenders

That's the thing, he would be great if we had no decent defenders. But we need to boost our midfield. We just lost one of the best midfielders in the comp and Thommo has a year left. We need to add lots of midfield class over the next 2 years.

Not against drafting midfielders at all. It probably depends on what the next few drafts project to be like also. They'll look ahead and see what's available from the 16-17 year olds. If they project that this years midfield crop isn't as good as what will be available next year then that could influence their decision making also.

The issue with this is the lack of high quality mids in this draft. The ones that are there are very similar to the ones we already have.

We also only have 3 KPDs on our entire list so arguably more of a need.

Remember when everyone went apeshit when we drafted Talia because we already had Rutten, Bock and Davis. Didn't turn out to be such a bad decision.

You know how no one drafts ruckmen anymore because it's easier to poach one a few years later from other clubs after their development has been done and you've sorted the Meesens from the Mumfords...?

Will it start being the same with tall forwards? Ignore them in the draft then if someone shows promise offer them a million bucks as a 3rd year player?

I posted a few weeks ago re: the strike rate of tall forwards taken with first round picks becoming A graders, comparing the 190-195cm more mobile types vs the 200cm ruck/forwards that have become so fashionable in recent years. Suffice to say that the former seems to be a much safer bet than the latter.

I've heard Harry McKay mentioned a few times and I'm a bit wary - these giant, 200cm, big marking tall forwards have been all the rage in the first round over the last 3-4 years, with some very early picks spent on securing the likes of Day, Dixon, Lynch, Patton, Boyd, Daniher, Wright & Apeness. These types are always hyped up massively around draft time (3 are tipped to go in the top 20 this year - Schache, Weideman & McKay), but are they your best bet if you're looking for an elite key position forward with one of those early picks?

Compare those names and their performances to date relative to what we've seen from the likes of Gunston, Cameron, Darling, Stringer, Hogan, McCarthy, McCartin - you can even go back further to Tex and Josh Kennedy. It seems to me that the more skillful, mobile forwards around the 190-195cm mark are probably a safer bet, and once you get over ~196cm (6'5"), that forward had better have some pretty exceptional traits other than just being physically imposing and a strong mark to be worth the investment of a top 10 pick. That might be enough to dominate at under 18 level, but in the AFL I feel a few of these guys get caught out when it becomes apparent that they can't just rag doll defenders and take chest marks all day.

I think you're right, as with ruckmen it's definitely worth considering letting another club take the risk and put in the ground work on the 200cm key forward, and trade for one later on rather than using a top 10 pick.

I know very little about the players available except from what I read on here. Thankfully Wayne has me on ignore so he wont read this, but if Oliver if available, he seems to be a quality mid we could do with.
