question

why would you go tucker over bonner? i would of though bonner is really the more of the need out of the two.
Cal Twomey's rankings has Tucker at #17 and Bonner at #22 so their both highly thought of in terms of this draft. Cal's Bio's on the two players.

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2015-11-13/2015-draft-final-phantom-form-guide-update

Darcy Tucker:
The AFL should suit Tucker, whose pace, agility and zip will allow him to break through traffic and create openings. The half-back is best when he has the ball under his arm and is gliding across the ground. When up and going and feeling confident, Tucker offers great drive and rebound. He takes the game on, enjoys baulking opponents, and then sending the ball inside-50 with his left foot kicking. Tucker is dedicated to being as good as he can, and has been striving towards an AFL career for most of his life. After an up-and-down season, Tucker will be keen to start his career off on a good step and will impress his new teammates right away with his professional approach.

Where does he go? Adelaide has shown interest for pick 13, as have the Saints for pick 14. North Melbourne is a shot should he get through a little later, as might be the Bulldogs and West Coast.

Riley Bonner:
As an attacking and rebounding half-back, Bonner makes things a whole lot easier for forwards. He can dictate the play with his long-range left foot, kick over or through congestion and also hit moving players on a lead. But Bonner also breaks a bit of a mould: he's a left-footer who is (nearly) as strong on his right side. This makes him a dangerous player. Bonner's size also makes him a different prospect in this year's draft, because he has the capacity to take on talls and smalls, having advantages against all types of forwards. He's still learning the defensive craft but has some real weapons and will be a player opposition teams will put some time into stopping.

Where does he go? Bonner has spoken with every club, so there is a lot of interest in him. The Hawks are a chance, but his kicking will appeal to many in the 15-30 range.

Not sure I'm overly keen on Harley Balic who Twomey has linked us to, disposal very average on top of lacking penetration to my eye.
Same with Rhys Mathieson, ball magnet, hard at it, but very average foot skills.
Really hope the two players we eventually settle on have both accurate and penetrative foot skills this time.
If thats what were looking for then surely we pick from francis, milera and bonner.

My take on it is that Bonner sounds very outside in the way he plays, with limited inside ability and has a lot to work on defensively. Given we've just drafted Hampton and Seedsman who play very similar, to go along with Smith, Henderson, Wigg and Jaensch as attacking half back distributors, he's not fitting a massive need. Tucker is a bit similar, but seems the more complete player of the two, with greater potential to develop an inside game and become a genuine midfielder, which is far more what we need.

Given the latest from Twoomey, my feelings on how the draft order may settle(Ignoring Academy picks as they shouldn't change the order of non-academy players):
1) Carlton - Weitering (Seems a lock)
2) Brisbane - Schache (Seems a lock)
3) Melbourne - Weideman (Went with 2 mids last year, with a mid draft next year, have picked up Bugg, Kennedy and Melksham in trade period, could also grab a mid at 7, I think they'll go tall here)
4) Essendon - Parish (Biggest threat to grab Francis IMO, but I feel will lean towards a midfielder/marking forward combo, Parish best available mid)
5) Essendon - Curnow (Sounds like they're keen on another forward to assist Daniher, also has the potential to play midfield and replace Watson)
6) Gold Coast - Milera (Supposedly linked to Milera, dropped down the order because they new their player would still be there)
7) Melbourne - Oliver (Strong competitor who can go forward and take a grab, continues to round out what could end up being a very strong midfield in 2-3 years)
8) Carlton - McKay (Will want a KPF to go with Weitering, Crows a threat to grab McKay at 9, especially if Francis is gone)
9) Adelaide - Francis (Dream draft IMO, however I fear Essendon and Melbourne could also go for him)
10) GWS - Academy Player
11) Carlton - Collins (With KPP stocks devestated, gives them a 15 year Full Back to go with Weitering at CHB)
12) Richmond - Ah Chee (Adds some potency to their forward line)
13) Adelaide - Tucker (Crows supposedly interested, seems the type that we would go for, also wouldn't be surprised if Hibberd was selected here)

Alternate option:
1) Carlton - Schache (Given Collins likely available at 11, might prefer Schache to sure up their KPF stocks)
2) Brisbane - Weitering (Will grab either of Schache or Weitering)
3) Melbourne - Curnow (Might prefer his versatility to Weideman, plus less injury concerns)
4) Essendon - Parish (Will go to Essendon I think if he gets past Melbourne)
5) Essendon - Weideman (Will want at least 1x genuine tall forward you'd think, given the time Carslile and Hooker have spent up forward)
6) Gold Coast - Milera
7) Melbourne - Francis (Building a strong midfield, with Curnow under their belt might like what Francis offers off a HBF, also wouldn't surprise if they grabbed Curnow, if they reached for McKay as a long term 2nd ruck/KPF option)
8) Carlton - Oliver (I suspect will be keen to bolster their midfield if he's available)
9) Adelaide - McKay (We've been linked supposedly, could be seen as a Jenkins replacement for 3-4 years time)
10) Academy
11) Carlton - Collins (Went Schache, would want Collins here you'd think)
12) Richmond - Burton (Supposedly interested)
13) Adelaide - Hibberd (Classy flanker/winger with potential to develop into genuine midfielder, we might like what he offers)

Absolutely you would, personally I think there's more X-Factor to Francis.

To be fair the club once saw Pods as a 'KPD option'
There are always fallback plans, but there is no way that without many injuries otten is going to be given a KPD role.
Talia, Hartigan and Lever are our first choice tall defenders. Otten is next cab off the rank, ahead of Shaw. It only requires one injury.

Otten is probably sixth in line for a KPD role, behind Talia, Hartigan, Lever, Shaw and even Cheney
4th. Ahead of Shaw & Cheney. Was regularly selected on the emergency list towards the end of the season (after he'd regained match fitness in the SANFL), ahead of both.

Except Cheney was selected in the side ahead of Otten for both finals as our 3rd tall defender.

Disagree, I would have him third in that group, behind Lever but in front of Hartigan, think the club was being cautious last year in not bringing him up. My tip with good preseason will play KPD

Can everyone who hates the idea that we won't see our pick 9 on the stage on draft night accept thats its mostly for the players. These boys have put the hard work in and if they are the best 10 in that year then they deserve to be on stage. It maybe nice for us supporters to see our draftee but its for the player to be recognised.

Francis would be perfect, not so much for type (we have a million non key defenders) but just great talent, footy smarts, leadership and competitiveness. Doubt he'll get to us though.

I'd take a risk on Burton at 13, probably be no.1 if he didn't get injured.

Milera's speed and kicking skills set him apart, not only from our mids but also from the other mids in this draft, which is why he's almost certainly gone at 9.

That's the biggest issue with this years mids, there's no great pace or foot skills. If we grab a mid, they'll be just like the ones we already have. I guess if we want to replace Dangerfield, we go with Oliver but I'm not convinced on him. Have a feeling Balic will be a player.

Wouldn't be unhappy with McKay, know there's a risk but could be huge. Collins I like too.
I really like oliver, however has to be said" there is only 1 dangerfield" just as there is only one judd or ablett junior. I have great faith in our staff to select the next future star with either of our picks. Will be seeing the making of francis, milera or oliver?. I am impressed with tucker and believe he will become an a grade midfielder given a coupleof good pre seasons

Does anyone really give a shit what number they are drafted? Beyond obviously that they want to get drafted and go to a good club if possible.

Does it burn in Fyfe that he wasn't top 10? Does Watts carry around pride that he was No 1?
