Does anyone really give a shit what number they are drafted? Beyond obviously that they want to get drafted and go to a good club if possible.

Does it burn in Fyfe that he wasn't top 10? Does Watts carry around pride that he was No 1?
Maybe... It's the only real evidence he has to show the grandkids that he was once good.

No, it's actually a millstone.

Look Watts is still an OK footballer, does some really outstanding stuff, just nowhere near enough of it for a Pick 1.....and then there's the brain fades. If he'd been taken in the 20's he would hardly be getting a mention as he wouldn't have the microscope on every minute of AFL he plays.

There are significant financial benefits to being a top-5 draftee. These players receive a one-off payment, allegedly to pay them for promotional duties they will be required to complete.
Pick #1 - $10,000
Pick #2 & #3 - $5000
Pick #4 & #5 - $2500

Which round they were selected also makes a difference to their base payments in the 1st and 2nd years. In 2016 a 1st round draftee (in their 1st year) has a base salary of $73660, a 2nd round player receives $66950, 3rd (and later) round players receive $63460. Match payments and bonus payments (dependent on the number of games played) are independent of draft position.

Doesn't make much difference after that initial contract, but it is important in those first two years.

Oh please! Every one knew that last year we were taking Lever and the year before Matt Crouch is he was available. If we are getting linked to Tucker, H.McKay, Balic, Dunkley then it means that there is genuine interest there from our part. It's too far out to get a very good read on the ranking of those players on our draft board. A couple of days before the draft and I think Emma Quayle will get out picks right (at least pick 9).
Usually the fist round almost becomes common knowledge a couple of days before the draft - at least the top ten. I wouldn't be surprised if that wasn't the case this year as so many clubs have multiple early picks. Adelaide for example would be trying to keep very quite on who they are into because if Carlton found out that Adelaide were dead keen on player "X" at 9 and didn't like player "Y" at all, then Carlton might take player "X" at pick 8 knowing that player "Y" will still be there at 11 even if he was their first choice. I can't remember a season that so many clubs had multiple top 20 picks.

I'd have Francis-Oliver as the most preferred option. Oliver provides the inside grunt we need. Francis the in/out class.

How about francis and Matheison. It looks like oliver will probably go in the top 10. Everyone seems to be dropping off of Matheison because of his testing. Very good inside midfielder

Endurance and kicking are the biggest "knock", and pedestrian pace wise, probably why he's slipping??

What a sh!t year to score two first round draft picks when three other clubs manage to wangle two first round draft picks also and all before ours. Wonder what the selection dynamic would have been like if all picks before our 9 are from different clubs.

I don't know too much about the players but do you know if he was all Australian the last 2 years. Sam mitchell is slow and I think his endurance was questionable at the start of his career. I don't think oliver will get to 13 so I would think this guy is what we should be after if scotty t retires at the end of the year

I thought our recruiters may have gone Francis Milera but I think we will end up going Milera Burton. If we pass on Burton at 13 we must have fairly good Intel that he's not 100% and we are the best placed club to have that Intel.
If Milera comes to us here's a tip for all Adelaide fans it is pronounced miller -a not milaira!

I think Essendon are into WM and we may miss out but his skill set and his character have grown on me big time I think he will make it and do well.

Some players do as we've heard stories about them bragging about where they were selected - fairly sure one of those Hawk forwards they drafted early in the 00's was bragging about where he was picked to the players at the club/would ask where they were selected.

Guess there's probably a strong correlation to those that brag about it and those that have short careers in the AFL.

Wouldn't think there would be much difference at all. Still the same number of players being selected ahead of us.

What is making a big difference is the bidding process for the Academy players.

2 of Francis, Oliver, Burton or Milera (in that order of preference) and I'm happy. All appear to have some elite trait or that little bit of x-factor about them that you want from a first rounder.

I actually think it probably helps if we're interested in the best talent available.

I think teams with multiple high picks will be more likely to let needs influence their decision making (even if only slightly) rather than just going straight for the most talented player. Might see some big sliders.

Sam Mitchell had/has elite footskills...

Mathieson is in much the same mould as M.Crouch, D. Gore, C. Ellis-Yolmen, J. Lyons IMO, none of whom possess great leg speed with perhaps the exception of Gore.

Think we need a couple of mids with a blend of inside/outside ability that run hard both ways and possess good endurance in the Rory Sloane mould more than pure inside mids IMO.

how does the bidding the process change anything? Points system is different but that doesn't really change the early picks

The big difference is Sydney, a team that finished above us this year and has been a very successful team [Premierships] for a sustained period yet still gets access to a "superior" player that all clubs finishing below them would likely have taken.

That's not a change for this year though.

If Callum Mills was available to all clubs he could even go Pick 1, just doesn't seem fair given Sydney's sustained success that "struggling" clubs with little or zero success for years don't get a crack at him is all.

There is a line of thinking that would suggest it is a good thing for us as these clubs may not go best available with their second pick but rather draft for a need (within reason).

It changes what clubs have access to individual players but, as in Sydney with Mills, Brisbane are virtually getting 2 top 10 prospects in an uncompromised draft Hipwood and Keays, the Giants Hopper and Kennedy. In an uncompromised draft Mills, Keays and Kennedy would be going elsewhere.
