He was rated as a pretty good player last year. I was hoping we'd get him.

Just flicked back to one of the pre-draft threads too to check whether I was remembering this correctly - Thank you Knightmare :

  • That leaves Gore & Wigg, both of whom I regard as largely unknown quantities at this stage - but given that neither played an AFL game in their debut season, I doubt that they will turn out to be A-grade players. That's not to say they won't be successful AFL players, just not A-graders.
How many games did Josh P. Kennedy play in his 1st year?
How many games did Josh P. Kennedy play in his 2nd year??

How many games did Kieran Jack play in his 1st year?
How many games did Kieran Jack play in his 2nd year?

How many games did David Mundy play in his 1st year?

Vader, how many A-Graders do you think are needed for an AFL midfield?
At minimum of 5 if you want to be a serious premiership contender, rather than just an also-ran (or never-was).

We currently have 2 - Thompson & Sloane - and Thompson will probably retire next year.

We have 3 players with the potential to be A-grade midfielders - Brad Crouch, Brodie Smith, and Rory Laird. Smith & Laird need to make the transition from defence to midfield. Crouch needs to stay clear of the medical rooms.

Even the most positive outlook leaves us short 1-2 A-grade midfielders.

You my friend have not an ounce of sense. Please tell your credentials as I see nothing but foolish comments coming from you.

Please look through the history of all players for their pre 50 game history before commenting again. And for the record crouch Jnr will end up being one of the better mids that has played for this club before his career has ended...
Crouch's ceiling is probably similar to Richard Douglas. Douglas is a good player who won a Club Champion jacket, but he's never been an A-grade player and he's never going to get mentioned in "best team ever" discussions.

Crouch Snr has the potential to be one of the best mids to play for the club. Maybe you're getting the two of them confused?

I think, as many as possible

Need not want.

No team has a midfield full of guns, but none of the top teams have fewer midfield guns than Adelaide. We currently have just 3 genuine A-grade midfielders on our list - Thompson, Sloane and Brad Crouch - and Crouch is perpetually injured. Smith is an A-grader, but hasn't spent much time in the midfield to date. The rest of them aren't A-graders and never will be.

** You should also factor in Douglas, who is a solid B+ player - but not A-grade.

Thompson/Sloane/Crouch/Crouch/CEY/Gore is not "pretty good", it's "pretty awful". It's a midfield that would have most opposition coaches licking their lips in anticipation, not shivering in terror.

As for our half-backs and wings, the new players all have massive question marks hanging over them. We may have massively improved our team, or added more dead wood. We really don't know at this point in time - and I'm not going to start counting my chickens before they've hatched.

We're strong up forward. Our 2nd KPD is the only real weakness in our defence. Jacobs is one of the best ruckmen in the competition. With Dangerfield gone, Thompson going, and Brad Crouch perpetually injured, our midfield is easily the weakest part of our team.

Agree, can't believe I forgot Dougy. He is A- at least. I'll add him in with an edit.

Disagree about our midfield. I cannot see how losing Dangerfield pushes us from best clearances in the middle to "pretty awful" or "the weakest part of our team".

Dangerfield gone = true.
Thompson going = so? Are you saying that he will be a bust in 2016 because of his age?
Brad Crouch perpetually injured = he is ready for 2016, that is all that matters.

5 A graders would be ideal in the midfield IMO. Let's add 2 tonight.

Might bid on Academy boys Hipwood and Himmelberg if Harry's off the table...
Almost certainly ....also they were talking about bidding for Kennedy

So how were we the #1 centre clearance team last year? Add in Danger that means on your numbers we had 3 last year? Sorry Vader - disagree with your position on this completely. Not sure why so pessimistic, but happy to leave you to it.

We draft for talent. 2 best talented players available please.

For us that are slugging it at work today in a meeting no less, updates on what Noble is saying on the draft show pretty please! :)
Just look at his last pre-draft presser video ......it'll be a repeat

Given your own admission that 12 months ago, you didn't see Laird being an A grade midfielder, is it possible that in 12 months time, there may be someone else that bobs up and improves to the required A grade level, say a Gore or a Lyons?

I'm projecting forward to 2017 (and beyond), which is supposedly when Walsh thought our premiership window would be open. By that time we'll be without Dangerfield & Thompson - the combination of which is sufficient to drop us from being one of the best clearance sides to one of the worst.

As for Brad Crouch.. I'm thinking of calling him Mr Snuffleupagus, or maybe Brigadoon. So rarely is he ever seen. As for him actually participating in the 2016 season in a meaningful way - I'll believe it when I see it, and not a day before.

did Nobes just say that Crouch had more scans on his foot?
I am sure they are doing continuous scans to ensure healing correctly ......no drama in that statement

Gore, possibly - he's an unknown quantity. Possible, but unlikely.
Lyons - not a snowball's chance in Hell.

:thumbsu: Very common to have new recruits no play a game in first season ......it means zilch in terms of their future

It's the 3rd year where proper assessments can be made

Well if you are looking two years out you need to project the development of our existing players along with our trading etc... are you arguing that we should draft inside players this year in anticipation of losing players for 2017? What player picked today would be ready to be an A-Grader in the midfield in 2017? Surely not.
