I've got 500+ goals that says otherwise191cm is a useless size for a KPP as it means all he can be is a 3rd tall. Pick 3 is a lot to give up for a 3rd tall.

Do you have a source for the bolded? I find it hard to believe Eddie was in favour of scrapping a program that benefited the Pies as much as the northern academy did. We did gain Witts, Keeffe and to a lesser extent, Hartley through that system before it was scrapped. You do realise there use to be a nsw scholarship program which got you Langford, the crows T. Walker but most clubs could not be bothered investing and the clubs didn't want the program.
Then E. Mcguire, yes E. Mcguire and the rest of the AFL clubs decided to can that program and allow the creation of the academies in its place.
The Swans or AFL or northern clubs were not the ones that created the academies, but a vote from all the AFL clubs.
Now northern non afl state clubs are reaping benefits from investing millions, it's now the AFLs fault.
But think what you will.
Gunston then? He's finished high up in Coleman the last few years and whilst his official height is 193cm I doubt his shoulder to shoulder and arm reach would be above Curnow's.Times have changed though and O'Loughlin was unique because he used elusive skills to get the ball rather than size.

Gunston is helped by being in a forward line that is usually quite tall and also has a lot of other options. He wouldn't be too good if he was the sole focal point in a side and had the best defender on him.
At various stages i have also had this opinion of Gunstan, but surely he has well and truly silenced any critics.
He is more than a handful for any opponent.
Hawthorn have their share of players along for the ride, but Gunston proves time and again that he is a big time player.
Take when Hawthorn is versing the Swans for an example. When that is happening most of the time Rampe goes to Gunston. Now Rampe may be a pretty good player but it could be argued that he is our 3rd or 4th best defender.
Maybe you should stop putting Rampe on him.
He has towelled up much better players.
Just saying Gunstan has won me, and i'm sure many more, over.
It's not as though he's being protected by other Big Forwards and he gets loose. Schoeyplays up there and Roughy plays here, there and everywhere.
It is more that because of Roughead and often Hale Gunston does not often have the best defenders on a team on him. Also with all of Hawthorn's options up forward he never has to deal with being a main focal point and having other defenders zone off their own opponents to stop him. If Gunston was in a team like Carlton or Essendon I don't think he would be seen as being quite as good as he seems at Hawthorn.
I would say teams better start drafting some gun, athletic medium defenders. Because Gunston is one of a growing number of gun, athletic medium forwards. I hardly see it as a drawback of Gunston that he keeps performing big time, and at big times, on whover the oppo consider their best match-up for him.
I certainly wouldn't be putting my best defender on Hale or Schoey.
Not best defender but the thing is most teams only have 2 high quality defenders. 1 of them has to go to Roughead and if you don't trust your ruckman in defence then the other has to go to Hale. That leaves Gunston free.
It is hardly Gunstans fault that Ted and Grundy can't go with him. I am sure that if they could, then they would play on him instead of the slower Hale and Schoey.
That isn't a crack at Sydney. It is just a fact that Gunstans game is too much for most defenders.
An elite 190-193cm forward can be as elite as any forward....and sometimes even harder for Oppo's to match up on.

Not with the changing way the game is, especially is Curnow isn't a true KPP anyway as he has played minutes in the middle.
Risk at pick 3, but he is well worth a top 10 selection and Melbourne can go safer with their 2nd selection. Curnow could easily be the best player in the draft.
School holidays started didn't it?Spin it however u want
It's a compromised bullshit rule the AFL has bought in to aid the northern states in winning games and essentially making them more money.
Run academy's. All throughout northern states just don't compromise a draft. Every clubs get access to the elite kids of the North
Amy compromised bullshit rule that screws with the draft is an appalling idea
I know Mick Turner is a well known spruiker of his Falcons players, but i thought it interesting when he said a few months ago that Curnow will be the best Falcon in this years draft.
What made it interesting is the fact that Parish is also a Falcon.
Dunno if it holds any weight, maybe Mick said the same thing about Parish the next day when asked lol.
Sydney could get the NSW players back in two years for peanuts if they didn't get first refusal at them in a bidding system.
Terry Wallace says these elite players wouldn't be AFL without the guarantee they got to stay in Sydney, sounds like a huge draw card home.
He could well be right, have a few questions with Parish, but Parish has more exposed form. I feel Melbourne can take a gamble as they have another high first round selection selection. They could grab Oliver (if there), etc. If they end up with Curnow and Oliver that could be a perfect draft for Melbourne.
