Draft whispers, rumours & scuttlebut

in theory melbourne could do this but they never would. the AFL published a statement about bidding like this a few weeks ago. they will come down very hard on unrealistic bidding and consider it draft tampering. assume they would be banned from the draft for a few years for an obvious breach like this one.

It will be more interesting to see if a club with an academy ever bids on another academy player, if no bids ever come then that is potentially draft tampering.

I've heard Carlton rate him as a top 5 player in the draft, so would be very surprised if he gets past their pick 8.
Another half back flanker?

Nah, the statement was about clubs NOT bidding on academy players.

http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2015-11-12/afl-warns-clubs-on-bidding-collusion
Some clubs have raised concerns about the bidding process after the trade period, which saw several clubs early in the order involved in deals.
Many recruiters rate midfielders Mills, Hopper and Kennedy inside the first five or six players in this year's draft pool, but a number of clubs fear bids may not be placed on the highly rated players until deeper into the draft.

"Obviously we have a real problem with collusion and if any clubs were colluding not to bid on players, we would come down terribly, terribly hard on that. The question is whether you can prove that obviously," Clothier said.

There is some speculation that when GWS traded Bugg and pick 7 to Melbourne for pick 10, 43 and 64 there was might've also been a "gentleman's" agreement that Melbourne wouldn't bid on any GWS academy players.

"Over" bidding is fine because the academy clubs have the option to not match a bid

Has so much Daniel Rich about him (Aaron Francis). A top 3 player all year but come draft day/night will slide a handful of places he was expected to go. Will have a very good start to his AFL career (win the rising star award like Rich? perhaps!) but stagnate in year 2 with others taken before him progressing into better AFL players.

was looking at the afl website and the draft interview questions on the grill ans wondered if Francis was the one that stuffed up the interviews

This week's lotto numbers?

But if you are selecting every major talked about academy player this year, one by one, one right after the other, then it is obvious what that club is doing.

Trying to get who they think is the best player available?

and the best available would just happen to be 5 academy players in a row?

Why not? Who are we to judge how clubs rate talent?

There have been plenty of 'bolters' and 'sliders' to show that not every club views the draft the same.

If Melbourne bid on Ben Keays at pick 3 they run the risk of Brisbane declining to match that. I don't think clubs will run the risk of picking up players they don't rate, but if a club did bid on 4/5/6 academy (or father/son) players in a row, they have that right.

It is not exactly within the spirit of the academy system though is it.

I'd think every club would rate him as a top 5 player tbh. I've heard that Port rated Francis top 2 and that they were also stunned at how far he has fallen and in hindsight should have traded back into top 10 pick.

Absolutely it is.

Either the Academy club matches the bid or the bidding club picks up that player. That's exactly what the system is designed to do. The Academy clubs aren't guaranteed to get all of the top players their systems produce, they just a discount and the option to match a live bid.

I've heard a rumour that Weitering is likely to make it all the way through to Hawthorn.

Here's how it will happen

MY PHANTOM DRAFT 2015
1. Josh Schache (Carlton) -
After meeting with new coach Brendon Bolton, Weitering revealed he has a pathological fear of short people, causing Carlton to select Schache instead.
2. Johnny Gastev (Brisbane) - Fearing another draftee wanting to return home after 2 years, Brisbane decides to talk Gastev out of retirement, as he is a player who proved to enjoy playing in Brisbane.
3. Callum Mills (Sydney) - Melbourne bids, Sydney matches just to stick it up Eddie McGuire.
4. Darcy Parish (Melbourne) - Melbourne's proven history as recruiting geniuses have them selecting Parish, as they firmly believed that he was 'undoubtably the very best player in the draft'
5. Jacob Hopper (GWS) - Essendon bids, GWS matches due to their overwhelming sense of pride at having done something right on a football field, by developing Hopper.
6. Aaron Francis (Essendon)
7. Sam Weideman (Essendon) -
Essendon selects Francis and Weideman as best available talents, bypassing Weitering as they believed 'his high character and integrity weren't congruent with the current value system of EFC's administration'. They went on, 'We weren't comfortable with his behaviour when we met with him prior to the draft. He was trying to hold us accountable for our actions. We tried explaining to him that wasn't how we did things at EFC, but he wouldn't listen.'
8. Rhys Mathieson (Gold Coast) - fearing their midfield again being decimated by injury, GC target the best mid available
9. Charlie Curnow (Melbourne) - Melbourne are ecstatic securing Curnow, insisting they had him as No.2 on their draft board. They can't believe he was still available. When quizzed about Weitering they explain that they have not been in the hospitality industry for some time.
10. Wayne Milera (Carlton) - Wanting to check one last time regarding Weitering's fear of short people, Carlton deploy a former premiership player to represent them in these discussions. Matthew Hogg reports back that Weitering's status is unchanged. They take Milera.
11. Harley Balic (Adelaide) - Adelaide had every intention of drafting Weitering, but due to their emotional state as a result of losing Patrick Dangerfield, their draft notes were smudged with tears which caused them to read out the wrong number. Welcome Harley Balic.
12. Matthew Kennedy (GWS) - Carlton bids, GWS match. Their pride now overflowing after selecting another from their flourishing football nursery.
13. Jack Silvagni (Carlton) - Who else? Nepotism is part of the fabric at Carlton
14. Eric Hipwood (Brisbane) -
Richmond Bids, Brisbane match. Happy to have a home grown talent
15. Jade Gresham (Richmond) - Believed that Rance's shoulders are broad enough to continue to carry Richmond's backline all on his own, judged Weitering to be an unnecessary investment as a result.
16. Pass (Adelaide) - Commenced immediate therapy for their grief and loss issues. They will be absent for the remainder of the draft.
17. Kieran Collins (St Kilda) - Intended to draft Weitering but new free agent signing Jake Carlisle began to cry at the prospect of having to play forward again. Given their monetary investment in him, and his history of petulant behaviour when things aren't going his way, St Kilda thought it best to keep him happy and not take Weitering. They sneakily drafted another key defender in Collins, but Carlisle was too high at the time to notice.
18. Ben Keays (Brisbane) - Home grown talent, has the Lions happy as a pig in you know what
19. Jacob Weitering (Hawthorn) - Sitting in stunned amazement at what has just transpired, they almost forget to make a selection, but alas for the rest of the competition, they manage to spit out Weitering's number. Almost immediately, they begin planning their premiership celebrations

It could happen right?

;)

Yeah good one .............

Cool story bro...

These draft journos only pump up their brand to keep up with their click bait and fill air time in the lead up to the draft.

Same guy pays out on Carlton fans for questioning his reputation.

IIRC, Anderson predicted that Kreuzer would leave and Carlisle would be a Carlton player.

BA might follow those who say Weideman is in the mix for pick three.

So TwentyNine, which would be better, Schache and and Collins or Weitering and Weideman (assuming he slides through to 8/11 and gets the ankle right) ???

Probably Schache and Collins for mine still, photo finish though. But it's a moot point as Weideman will not get to 8 if clubs are confident in his ankle - no way that both Melbourne and Essendon overlook him twice.

I think you need to be re-educated on the meaning of the word "could".

The slide would obviously be is there are ??? on the ankle but Carlton take a punt considering we have 3 picks in the top 11 and we see his upside .......
