He wasn't recruited to be part of a fully fit team. Please take your negativity away from my Drew Petrie Appreciation Thread. Kthxbye.
NN out, Lycett missing the start of the year at best, McInnes struggling to fill the KPP/backup ruck role at WAFL level, Vardy having a history of injury and Giles at his best being a spare spare ruck. Add that a lot of our key forward hopes are in to few baskets.

Given that, in hindsight, getting Petrie was a masterstroke. If things go well, he plays WAFL, and stays a rookie, and retires after a year.
If things don't go well, we paid peanuts for a proven durable competent forward, and a ruck that is at least good around the ground and gives options.

Its hard to see another move the Eagles could have made that would have delivered this sort of return.

Apples and oranges. Priddis is done, Mitchell is close to done and wants to focus on coaching. With them gone our centre square dynamic changes, and that's necessary and exciting.

Petrie was recruited as insurance, which was basically a show of complete lack of faith in Giles and McInnes.

Naitanui hasn't played a game, Lycett played one and is injured again and Vardy just got injured after playing 17 in a row for the first time. The call on Petrie should be made based on what happens with McInnes and Giles, and how Naitanui and Lycett are tracking heading into next year.

I'm happy for us to say 'yep, you've done the job we needed you for for a year but we don't need you for 2018' and let him retire, but if that's the case I'll be annoyed if we go and get another back up ruck. The club is currently using 4 list spots (2 are rookies) on Vardy, Giles, McInnes and Petrie. All are there for roughly the same reason and none are best 22 with a full list. We need to be realistic. You can't have a back up for the back up in case the back up to the back up goes down, that's nuts. For mine we keep NN, Lycett and Vardy (none in danger) then just one of the other 3. I'm OK with drafting another young ruck as a project player (Cox, NN, Gardy all took time) but we need to limit the number of list cloggers we carry.

Given we've clearly decided that Petrie > McInnes > Giles in the pecking order it would make no sense to cut Petrie and keep the latter two. If we cut the latter two (which looks likely) then keeping Petrie for another year isn't a bad idea.

Absolutely spot on mate, hit the nail on the head.

I hope this is what transpires.

well you guys have got your wish looks like he is going to play on next year god help the eagles

He has been more than serviceable this year. Shown more intent and skill then some of the guys 10-15 years his junior. Even if he goes around next year (unlikely) he will likely not get a game with a fit NN/Lycett. He deserves far more credit than you are currently giving him.

on his intent i dont disagree with you just on his ability and it looks like he is going around next year

He has been very solid, kicking goals, linking up and taking some critical contested marks. Need to be a little more attentive.
In regards to him going around next year, its all speculation. I think its 99% likely he will retire at seasons end.

If we cut McInnes and Giles give this guy a one year deal.

Is there a case for not cutting these guys?

NN, Lycett and Vardy are all out and neither can get a game.

2014 draft we took Jacko Nelson at pick 51. 2013 Barrass at 43. Each list spot we dedicate to someone like Giles or McInnes we potentially miss out on one of these guys.

i find it amusing how cranky some people get like yourself for example. stop making me laugh and i'll stop posting simple
We just want to appreciate what Petrie has done for our club.

If you want to talk absolute horse**** about him and not back it up with actual evidence - don't get upset when you get called out and then try and weasle your way out by blaming others for your own actions.

Make your own thread about your disappointment of Petrie instead of hijacking this one. Or are you too afraid that people will stop paying attention to you?

Funny that the most frequent poster in the Drew Petrie Appreciation Thread (accounting for about 1/5th of his posts on this site) is someone who clearly does not appreciate Drew Petrie :D

Yes, this is the Drew Petrie praise thread. Take your heathen views elsewhere.

I think one might be spared if Petrie pulls the plug. Giles is contracted and would require a payout. But you're right it shows where they are rated if Mackenzie is getting picked over them as second ruck.

MacKenzie hasn't played in the ruck at all at AFL level this year.

Yeah, lazy phrasing. I mean the MC prefer to cram Mackenzie in to the backline allowing Gov to go forward/ruck. You are correct. Either way it spells the end for Giles and McInnes you'd have to think.

There is no loss in having Petrie on our list next year.

He will be a fallback option but nothing wrong with having a guy who gives 110% waiting in the wings.

Have ate humble pie this year after scoffing at his recruitment. That spoil he did in the goal square the other week epitomizes the effort this bloke puts in.

A for effort; odd as that may sound.I apologise for early season derogatoty comments.Has given us a bit of a physical presence.Well done Drew, youve earnt another 12 months if you want it.

Yeah very strange, it simply means most on this site instantly label you as someone who has 0 football knowledge and watches a completely different game to 99% of other supporters and that's okay.. to each their own :)

we will all continue to flog out loads over Drew.
