Dubious player Height/Weight

Have you ever been up close to a player and thought that they were much taller/shorter/heavier/lighter than their official listed height and weight?

I was at a fish and chip shop one day when my hero Jason Johnson walked in and stood next to me. He is listed as 181cm 84 kg. I am 180cm 83kg, and i reckon i was a little bit taller than him, and also he would outweigh me by at least 5-6 kilos instead of just one.

Alan Didak

They said his 188 (same height as Buckley) and he is much shorter in real life.

Glen Bowyer is listed at 181 and is shorter than me in real life. That is saying something.

Ben Cousins is taller than 175 cm or whatever he's listed at! His weight is a bit iffy too..Id say closerto 89 kgs. He's still gorgeous though!

He was drafted at 183, so they've obviously got something wrong.

Also Daniel Bradshaw is listed as just 186 cm, am I the only one who would guess that he's over 190?

Ben Cousins is listed at 179 cm, not 175 cm... and I doubt he would weigh close to 90 kg. I'd suggest that you get over your obsession of Ben Cousins... In every post that I have read of yours, you almost always mention him.

Alan Didak is listed at 182 cm in the 2002 stats book, not 188 cm...

I was comparing this years player listings to last years, and couldn't help but notice that several players' heights had changed. For example, in 2001 Trent Croad was listed at 192 cm, but in 2002 he is listed at 190 cm.

Other players who seem to have shrunk are Luke Toia and Peter Bell. (Sorry to have only used examples from Freo but I couldn't think of any other players who's height listing had dropped and my stat book isn't here with me at the moment)

I can understand if a player's height may have increased over a season as they could still be growing, but if their height has decreased.... then something really strange is going on with the measurements.

I stood next to Mark McGough nearly two weeks ago. It says he should be about 4 cm's taller than me, but unless I have grown 4 cm's since I last measured my height, his must be listed wrong.

I play footy at Glenferrie Oval with my mates quite often. and we've got up-close to such players as Crawford, Chick, Dixon, Adrian Cox, Harford...

i reckon i could take on Crawf

But seriously, on tv you reckon they are super-athletes. But when you see them up-close, they don't seem that different from you and me.

By the way, i almost ran over Simon Cox in the carpark one time

Same as Aaqib Mateef Inajar Besidethebed - he was 16 in 1988/89 when he made his international debut, then in 1989/90 Pakistan played in Australia again and he was 19.

Leon Davis seems as tall as Obree, but he is listed as shorter.

Bill Nicholls was listed as 3cms tall in last years VFL record.

Robbie Campbell grew a few cms over the summer but it hasn't been listed.

Stewie Loewe (he of the greatest growth spurt in history according to my early footy records) has gone from

183cm in 1986 (he came onto the list at 6 foot ?!?!?!?)
191cm in 1987
193cm in 1992
196cm in 1996
196cm in 1999
194cm in 2002

at this rate he'll be back to 6 feet tall in 2010

Lockett was listed at 110kgs in '94 and 108kg's this year, I'm tipping he's gone closer to 115kg's then to 95kg's

This is just from watching telly but Richie Cole is listed as 182cm but looks a bit taller than that in the VFL games on ABC. Could just be the skinniness factor (75kg) making him look taller tho.

Nick Holland doesn't look that tall close up and neither does Billy Brownless.

I remember that, and about two years later he was already 21. Good old Paki's.

A lot of player's weight listed is seriously wrong. They are usually just given the original weight they started at from day 1, and it doesn't change. Obviously most players gain kilos as their body matures. Peter Daicos was listed at about 177cm depending where ur looking, was a fair bit taller...

I have never believed that both Brett Ratten and Aaron Hamill are 184cms. Hamill always seems taller than Ratten both on TV and in real life.

If Craig Bradley is 183cm like he was listed a few seasons ago then I am 6 foot 3.

When you stand next to Andrew Merrington he seems a lot taller than the 192cm he is credited with.

Yes i would love to get my hands on some of those scales that they use to weigh themselves. Always am very skeptical about some on the weights they 'come up with'. Surely most players especially those at the heavier end of town have got to be at least a couple of kg's heavier than what they admit to.

Yeah, looks around 190 to me, too. 186 is midget-sized these days.
