Is the 'choosing to bump' thing a factor in this case, given a North player had possession of the ball?
Yes, he chose to bump. It was then upon Durdin to execute it without causing a head clash.

Thanks for the clarification, I thought it was for cases when the player chooses to bump instead of performing a reasonable alternative action (excluding doing nothing) such as attacking a ball in-dispute or tackling the player with the ball.

The rule was changed again the past December that there is a strict liability on the player choosing to bump that they must do so without causing injury for if they do they are responsible for any injury caused.

What more is the bloke supposed to do?

He can’t tackle, he’s clearly kept low - everything textbook like the AFL want

And because of an accidental headclash he is supppsed to have a holiday

Bullshit

I can understand in a scenario like burton and lecras last year - both should have been tackles

Durdin didn’t have that option.

I feel for Sam as there is nothing malicious about that at all. His only alternative is to not shepherd, and he's tried to stay as low as possible. But going by the current laws, any bump that causes a head clash is suspendable, whether it is reasonable or not. From my reading of the laws, there is nothing about having alternative options or not.

Ablett chose to block after the ball is gone, intentional elbow to the head. This is the crap that should be stamped out of the game, not accidental head clashes.

I’m not sure when elbows became part of blocking and how many elbows does he have to throw before the good bloke defence goes out the window?

Games gone to shit.

Sniping is ok, accidents not.

Relax mate, it’s only been 1 act in over 300 games before today.
Tomorrow they’ll deal with it. You act like he has been given numerous amounts of chances before. He is a 300 game vet, imagine if everyone played the game as fairly as Ablett?

Sure he needs to address the way he blocks players now but it’s hardly damaging. Imo I think Ablett is too scared to bump with that shoulder of his. No one is getting seriously hurt here. Clumsy blocks not throwing elbows to hurt.

However on topic, Durdin SHOULD be fine. It’s an unfortunate outcome of a perfectly legal act. Tbh Rohan amongst other players need to be more aware of their surroundings.
We can try to protect players with rules but ultimately they must protect themselves.
