Each club's biggest first round draft flops

Considering the timing, the slight reach, the fact that he is the godson of the recruiting manager at the time....

Chris Masten at #3 is still a shocker.

Wasn't a reach, he was in the mix at that range along with Morton and Palmer, both of whom he's outperformed since. The team that reached in that draft was Adelaide - no one considered Dangerfield a top 10 chance.

Masten's not even in our top 10 stuffups.

Masten isn't even in the conversation for stuff ups; you've gotten 174 games from him.

1988 pick 10 - Peter Higgins (4 games)
1990 pick 12 - Shane Porter (0 games)
1994 pick 12 - Shane Sikora (3 games)
1995 pick 14 - Luke Trew (0 games)
1997 pick 12 - Jaxon Crabb (15 games)
1998 pick 10 - Brandon Hill (0 games) - one pick before Lenny Hayes
2000 pick 5 - Andrew McDougall (38 games)
2001 pick 6 - Ashley Sampi (78 games) - two picks before Jimmy Bartel
2007 pick 20 - Tony Notte (2 games)
2011 pick 23 - Murray Newman (6 games)

Toumpas - taken before Stringer & Wines
Morton - taken before Dangerfield, McEvoy, Henderson
Grimes - Taken before Taylor, Rance, Tarrant
Molan - Unlucky due to injury. Was a gun U/18 KPP.

Injuries is a hard one to judge. You can't be too critical. But Toumpas, Morton and Grimes give me nightmares.
Wasn't Grimes your captain?

Bit harsh calling the captain of your club a dud pick.

Someone called Mark Neeld thought it'd be a good idea to make Trengove & Grimes joint captains, when there was obviously a far more suitable leader in Nathan Jones. Fast forward three years and Grimes is delisted and Trengove has hardly been on the park.

Unfortunately Grimes just wasn't AFL standard when the kinks got ironed out, and someone like Neeld showed his total inability to manage the coaching by making decisions like this.

Trengove might have been a good player if his body held up, he was obviously a standout junior but his body totally failed him. It was a shame.

Scully and McLean I reckon are both better than Sylvia. Scully just ****** off and annoyed you guys. Jacks also a good footballer with a horrible history of injuries

Sylvia played quite a few games where he just dominated (Just ask Richmond supporters). Toumpas is by far our worst ever flop, and it is a strong field :$

I see he cornholed GC one last time on his way out the door.... seriously wonder if he actually gives a flying the way he squanders picks on skinny development players.

Here's a hint Clayton: It hasn't worked for 17 f'ing years, probably won't change at this point.

Couldnt agree more. Got lucky one draft and has lived on that for every single one of those years since.

What would be his best draft since?

Don't forget Watts, Trengove (unlucky), Gysberts.

Ahead of a #2 for O'Rourke?

At least they got something for Jaksch but next to nothing for #4 Pickett or #7 Ahern.
I guess those three are still all on lists in 2018. Wouldn't be that surprised if at least one is gone by the end though.

The spuds Pagan brought in during the dark, dark years. There were some gems in there, that had lost there shine before we picked them..

James Fantasia headed up our recruiting from 1995 to 2006, whilst we had a terrible recruiting record, particularly wasting nearly every 1st rounder.

#7 Angwin 2000
#8 Meesen 2004
#14 Watts 2003
#14 Sellar 2006
#13 Gilligan 1996
#17 Pfeifer 2005
#18 Williams 1995
#17 Piccione 1997

Fortunately our recruiting instantly improved & has been very good since he left.
#10 Dangerfield 2007
#10 Davis 2008
#13 Talia 2009
#14 Smith 2010
Minidraft #2 B Crouch 2011

Clearly recruiting Jack Watts, Gilligan (from Gilligans Island fame) and Michelle Pfeifer were ordinary selections...

Wasn't the problem you lost all your first round picks and therefore Pagan had to take risks on older players?
