I think we are starting to develop some depth as from the last few years so I have compared our 1st and 2nd 18s and can see some promise in the future and many likely replacements in the next few years from the 2nd 18 to the first.

1st 18

Selwood Glass Waters

Hunter Wilkes B Jones

Embley A Selwood Staker

Lecras Kennedy Lynch

Wirapanda Brown McKinley

Cox Kerr Priddis

2nd 18

Davis Mckenzie Stenglein

Schofield Spangher Nicoski

Ebert Butler Hurn

Houlighan Hansen Swift

Natanui Wilson Smith

Seaby Masten Shuey

Difficult teams to come up with as some players are easily replaceable amongst the teams. I went more with experience rather than age. A lot of the youngsters in the 2nd 18 will replace the first 18 by the end of the year and illustrates our depth for the future. thoughts?

I saw this depth as the case last year. All the first year players may have seemed a little out of depth, but they do generally know how to play good footy, they have shown that in the WAFL. They will learn and the experience they got last year will only further their improvement.

However I'd say Hurn would be in the 1st 18. S Selwood would be in the 2nd 18 and Stenglein/Nicoski would be in the 1st 18. Ebert and Masten would push it too.

It's good we have so much depth, it creates competition for places in the squad = Better performances

Interesting that you don't have Fletcher in either of those teams...

I agree, I was just wondering whether or not he could push the bench for the 2nd 18.
Was a once upon a time All-Australian and illegaleagle said he went with experience rather than age. So going by that Fletcher should be in the 1st 18 although we all know he won't be.

Depth is a dirty word.
We all thought eagles had depth, but 2008 showed what a huge difference there is between first 18 players and depth players.

As far as I'm concerned, depth only applies to how strong your best 22 is. Any players outside of that are fringe players for a reason. And with the eagles finishing 15th last year you'll be hard pressed to convince me that we have depth.

On first glance, jmac over hurn is pretty glaring from where I sit.

Hurn injured himself early last season, jmac came through and established himself as a quality inside mid, i think he would get first crack at his stage.

Jamie McNamara was constantly dropped for no reason that I could see. I really liked the way he played but I highly doubt he would be ahead of Hurn. Hurn is definate first 18

Interesting comments. The bolded part in particular confuses me?

I didn't think we had depth last year. What we had was a core group of around 25 fairly experienced players. After that was bunch of very raw, inexperienced kids. We needed the vast majority of that core group to stay on the park to be even a remote chance for the finals, but close to the opposite happened.

This resulted in a lot of our younger players being exposed to AFL football a lot earlier than they should have been. While the inexperience/lack of fitness cost us at the time, it has really fast-tracked their development. We can now say pretty confidently that players like Masten, Ebert, Schofield, Spangher, J-Mac etc. can step in and play their role for us if required. Additionally, our rookies have all had an extra year of development, and Cockie and Bedford are already mature players.

Not to mention the establishment of the likes of Wilkes, Kennedy and McKinley in the starting 22.

Our depth has improved beyond measure. You should be more optimistic.

B Stinga Glass Bones
HB Hurn Hunter Waters
C A Selwood Staker Embley
HF LeCras Kennedy Lynch
F Panda Brown McKinley
R Cox Kerr Priddis
Int. Seaby Hansen Masten Ebert

It will be Hansen before Brown in 09, but wouldn't be so in my team.

B S Selwood Ermac Nico
HB Smith Wilkes Spanga
C Schofield Butler Swift
HF J-mac J Jones Rosa
F Davis Wilson Notte
R NickNat Fletcher Shuey
Int. Sullivan Cockie Houlihan McGinnity

This is only my opinion. I'm quite flexible regarding player positions because a lot of players play more than 1 position though. I thought Rosa would of been the unlucky one to be in the B team, but there is no place for him in my best 22 which is unfortunate because I rate him. J Jones is way out of position but there was no where else to have him in the B team, showing up our depth in certain positions and over abundance in others.
I don't think we have the depth to cover some positions adequetly, as you can see from my B team. Given a couple years though, we'll be fine.
I'll leave it up for discusion.

McNamara played Rounds 4, 7, 12, 14, 16-22

Kerr played Rounds 2-6 and 10-15.

So out of 22 rounds they only played in 3 matches together, that's no coincidence.

McNamara was considered a replacement- at least as far as their style of play goes, so no surprise that was dropped for most games that Kerr was available or brought in when Kerr was injured/suspended.
