Not many elite kicks in that range so you may have to settle for the the best available, McLennan is a neat kick but he is in the Hurn mould still, i wouldnt say there are many later in the draft. Perhaps Durak Tucker or Noah Answerth could get a look late.

Duurmsa i feel is a solid kick without being elite, i dont have any concerns on his kicking.
I've really liked Stefan Radovanovic when I've seen him play, I could see him slotting into a Shannon Hurn type role? Like Hurn built like a brick outhouse albeit a little taller and kicking looked OK when I've seen him play. I was hoping the Crows might take a look at him but we'll likely be only using 3 or 4 picks. I don't think it's out of the question he could also play some midfield with his big body, strength and aggression?

Fogarty played 15 games for Geelong.

FOG was actually a great inside MID during his time in the U18 comp...
Wasn't really a small forward in the true sense. But was played there more due to not having a pressure presence in the 50m arc.
He will move into the midfield this year with another pre season & year in the gym IMO.
He'll be a GUN for us P_O

Decision making is the main issue for Radovanovic, I like his athletic attributes and I wouldn’t mind taking him as a rookie.

Agree with that although i was referring to the poster's question about drafted pressure forwards getting early games as Fogarty was the leading pressure player in the TAC Cup last year.

I didn't see Fogarty as a small forward in the TAC Cup. Miers was Geelongs main option.

Yeah fair enough...
But a lot of people think he was a small forward when actually he was a midfielder that due to circumstance had to play that role for us.
Can't wait until he gets more time in the centre.
Cheers!

Doing something different with my phantom draft which will come tomorrow, i wont be using any sort of hearsay or accuracy more so what i believe each team should pick for this years draft.

- Bids will come where i feel they should i wont even factor in if that club would bid on them or not

- This Phantom will include the whole national draft, i might need to do my research on how many picks clubs will actually take into the draft but if anyone wants to just tell me outright that would be appreciated

- I wont factor in live trading

- No mature age players will be selected (19 year olds allowed), my knowledge comes from watching under 18 games and i feel its unfair to judge them along side the mature players.

- The picks will show as a normal table with my reasoning for players taken being included in a club by club summary

Looking forward to this and the criticism to follow :p

There is a recent afl.com.au article on the number of picks each club will take. As good a source as any.

Brisbane are taking 5 picks to the draft.

Clubs stated need has always been continue to build midfield depth and run from the back line, with speed being emphasised.

With our trade period, outside run might be more a focus than inside grunt, and of course finding a Beams replacement.

We also need a replacement for Hodge.

Used to be that our top draft pick would be almost guaranteed a start in the team. Probably not now, unless they’re something special.

Yeah ive seen it but not sure how much changes once bids come in and picks are taken away, Swans and Collingwood may have alot of picks but thats because they need them for bids, they may only take Quaynor and Kelly and pass on the late selections they get back

I think that was about how many actual players will get picked up. Live picks taken in is (40 minus current list spots). So those two bits of info should be all you need.

A number of clubs actually only pick up 38 players.

Yes that's true. The 40 player thing just relates to the academy matching rule which limits live picks to spare list spots.

So the best work out a realistic draft is to:
  1. Take the indicative draft order
  2. Work out how many players each team has on their senior list, including those who have been been told they will be upgraded from the rookie list. If this is 35 for example, then that club has 5 live selections.
  3. Remove any selections for each club above the number of live picks they have.
  4. Use the afl.com.au article to assess the likely number of players taken in the draft. for example, academy clubs may have 6 live picks but the article says they will take 3 players.

Ageist :p

Just going over my selections and i have a feeling a few supporters wont be happy with their selections, this should be fun.
I just can't wait for the "X team doesn't have Pick Y, team Z does" because people don't understand bid matching

Ill be making those types of chnages clear in the OP, also wont include the upgraded rookies in the draft since that changes the order anyway.

There is no way we will skip on "insert player" if he is there at our pick.
We don't need "insert position"
Happens every year, it’s almost like clubs completely ignore their supporters :p

You mean full time recruiters think they know more than bigfooty posters, most of which only come on the draft board after trade period

Hello everyone and welcome to my edition of the 2018 Phantom Draft, many who have watched my Draft Watch thread would have seen my Rolling Mock Draft which was a bit of fun trying to predict who clubs would take using a combination of hearsay and my own personal views, what ive done different for this years Phantom Draft is that im going completely with my own personal views, just because the media and general public believe a certain player should go in a certain position means nothing for this draft so what im doing isnt an attempt to predict how this year draft will go more so what it should have ended up looking by the end of it.

I feel this is a better way to do my phantom this year as live trading could make any phantom to come out not even close to the real thing so why not have some fun going completely of my own views, so a few little bullet points below as to how this phantom will go

- This is the whole National Draft

- No mature age players included counting only 19 year olds

- Upgraded rookies are not included

- Available list spots is something i could have i could have put more time into but if their is any issue its too late to change so just imagine that late pick isnt taken if you want :p

- The picks you see will be very different to the official order, this is because of player bids and residual picks so please keep this in mind i dont want to have to explain myself on this

- Player profiles and reasoning will be saved for Club review posts below the draft, i wont go too in depth with profiles as ill put a link to AFL Draft Central's profiles with every player included here having a profile on their site. https://www.afldraftcentral.com.au/draft/

Pick 9 – Ian Hill
Small Forward/Outside Midfielder

I still really rate this kids potential and overall talent, injury has effected his year which has seen him drop a few pegs on most draft boards, he stood out to me against North Melbourne's VFL team playing for the academy where he played elusively as a Wingman where he also kicked 2 goals both on the run and a set shot. I think Hill could learn alot playing with arguably this decades best small forward in Eddie Betts, Hill has the tricks and skill to cause damage and on talent alone i feel he is worth a pick in this range, Crows need to find a successor to Betts eventually and although Milera looks a nice prospect i believe Hill could not only be better but become one of the AFL's elite small forwards.

Pick 15 – Bailey Williams
Ruckman/Key Forward

Williams has dropped of considerably after claims that he could go into the 50s, before then i think most draft watchers considered him a top 20 prospect and i still believe this, like Hill i see Williams taking over from Jacobs in a few years, he has played mostly as a key forwrd this year but its his time in the ruck that has impressed me the most over the last 2 years. His goalkicking has been hit or miss but he is still so dangerous with his leap and marking ability and i feel he is perfectly suited to the modern game.

Pick 20 – Chayce Jones
Small Utility

Jones is a tough one for me to rate, i love his attack on the ball and clean hands both at ground level and overhead, he is a surprisingly good mark overhead and his recent leap testing add another dimension to that. Jones has the best tackling technique ive seen from a draftee for a long time so he gets a massive tick there and with his speed he could hope to become a Devon Smith style of player. My query with Jones is finding his best position, i dont think he has the size and overall power to be a full time midfielder and i wouldnt say he has struck me as a real contested inside bull like a West who is a similar size so i see him being more of a wingman/flanker which is why i dont consider him a top 10 prospect. I think he suits the Crows game style with his contested ability and athletic attributes and he could play as early as next year.

Pick 25 – Jordan Clark
Medium Defender

Clark is a player that polarises me, he can look a million bucks coming out of defence with his reading of the play, run and long kicking but when i took a step back i noticed a lack of defensive mindset and the amount of uncontested ball and i wonder how he would go playing that role and if he would get away with it at AFL level. What attracts me in a defender is an ability to defend in some way and this is something im yet to see in Clark's game, there is a heap of upside still with Clark and if he can develop a defensive mindset i would consider him a top 15 choice but even then i dont see him as a top 10 prospect. Crows i believe will look at the upside here although it would be interesting to see how they would go with 2 attacking defenders in Clark and Laird

Pick 73 – Riley Grundy
Key Defender

Grundy is a tough one for me to rate, i do like his one on one game despite his light frame but he is a good height and has good athletic attributes for a key defender, im not sure how much he would have been talked about if his last name wasnt Grundy but even without the name i think he has the tools that make him a draftable player this late in the piece. Crows i feel have this position covered with this pick a combination of local and best available .

Pick 22 – Zac Butters
Small Forward/Outside Midfielder

Brisbane have made it known that they want to add more speed and Butters fits the bill, i compare Butters to an Orazio Fantasia/Jade Gresham type of player, a creative player that can not only kick goals but set others up. Butters has alot of key tools that i like with his speed, leap, attacking nature and energy. I can see why some have him as a top 20 choice, i would have him higher if not for a few games ive seen of him live where he has struggled to get into he game which can be an issue for outside players, he may need to find a way have more constant impact.

Pick 34 – Fraser Turner
Wingman

Another outside type for the Lions, Turner had a very solid showing at the National Championships showing his abiltiy to cover the ground and win plenty of the ball, his last quarters where particularity strong which is promising. His speed and skill i feel are above average but not elite, he can go quiet at times during the game but he can also bob up for a few goals here and there, he is a good finisher in that sense. Turner feel about right in this range and hopefully the addition of McFadyen can help ease him into life in Brisbane with fellow Allies teammate.

Pick 37 – Curtis Taylor
Medium Forward/Midfielder

The best mate of last years number 1 pick Rayner, this pick is a mix of best available and retention. Taylor has had a below average year for me especially at TAC level, his output has been mixed and i have queries on his defensive side. He has a good leap and he is a clean player below his knees which would lend him well to becoming a midfielder but his attack at the contest is varied where it sometimes looks like he picks and chooses when he wants to go. His kicking and speed i feel are only ok which is why i have him sliding this late and i worry for his role at AFL level in the modern game. He has the talent and hopefully he realises it playing with best mate Cam Rayner, if he can full fill that potential he is a bargain here for the Lions.

Pick 41 – Connor McFadyen
3rd Tall Forward/Inside Midfielder

McFadyen caught my eye in a practise match playing for the Allies, i believe he kicked 4/5 goals in that game. His power and marking ability really caught the eye with his speed and endurance the biggest queries from that initial viewing, he would go on to impress again in the National Championships kicking goals forward but also going through the midfield using his larger frame to his advantage. Despite his large frame i think he might take a few years to get that conditioning needed to play at the top level but i think he should be a very slid option down the line.

Pick 1 – Sam Walsh
Medium Midfielder

Not much to be said here, Blues take best available and one of the better midfielders to come from the draft in recent years in my opinion, he is a class act on and off the field, a future leader a no brainer here.

Pick 68 – Noah Answerth
Medium Defender/Midfielder

Answerth missed out on being drafted last year after a freak injury early in the year, this year he proved why he was considered a smokey last year despite the injury, he captained Oakleigh Chargers to a grand final and he managed to play every game for Vic Metro and was a consistent player both there and in the TAC Cup. Blues here take a ready made player with leadership credentials and a fantastic work ethic.

Pick 72 – Luke English
Inside Midfielder

English was a consistent performer for WA in the National Championships, he won plenty of the ball both inside and outside the contest. The query on English are is athletic attributes and rather vanilla style, he is no fuss and his skill level is only ok. With English Carlton get handy midfield depth and another hard working kid with good character.

Pick 80 – Ben Silvagni
Key Forward/Defender

The talented father son had an injury interrupted year, he didnt have the championships he would have hoped for but he had shown enough last year in school football to suggest he could be a very solid key forward, he was tried in defence but personally i feel he is a better forward, i dont mind his leading patterns and marking ability and he is a solid set shot. Silvagni is making his way to Carlton regardless and i think he should find a bid somewhere around this spot if not a bit earlier.
