All we need is the Grand Poobah/Moral Compass of all AFL Gerard Whately to give his opinion on Monday and Hipwood will be suspended.
Give whateley some credit, he is eons ahead of the fox sports guys you talk about.

I will bet good money on Whateley coming out and saying it should be a significant suspension but the laws do not cater for it. Think of him what you will but he isnt an idiot.

You'd think after a few years of following the game that people would learn that judging incidents conclusively in a 3d sport from a single isometric angle could be misleading...

If anyone watching that latest angle thinks that Hipwood intentionally orchestrated the contact between his opponent and the umpire, they need meds.

He didn't even initiate the contact, his opponent did.

This footage clears him. Dogs player goes to block him 40m off the ball, gets what he deserves
Its not really the Dogs player getting what he deserves or not thats the issue though. Its whether the umpire deserves what he got. The answer being always no.

Hipwood to get fined with the lowest careless contact from the behind the goal footage.

Absolutely nothing in it > behind the goals vision, Dogs player changes direction to run in front of Hipwood and umpire moves in the way. Should not even be fined.

The dogs player could see umpire and was trying to miss the collision, Hipwood who could see same umpire, pushed the dogs player so there was no alternative to a collision. Only someone wearing rose coloured glasses cannot admit that Hipwood is to blame for the collision, if Hipwood gets shepherded out of contest outside of area its a free, but he chose an alternative action.

That pushing action from Hipwood happens multiple times every round of the season, the Dogs player was attempting an illegal shepherd not to avoid an umpire collision IMO. + The umpire was always moving into a dangerous area, he had no game situation awareness. Hipwood may get a meaningless small fine but a suspension would be ridiculous.

BTW I wear maroon, blue and gold glasses.

We don't see players push other players into umpires that frequently, because they have been sanctioned for it in the past. If Hipwood gets off, then expect players to use umpires as a block in the future

Alarmist Helen Lovejoy nonsense.

If they do it intentionally they will be rightfully sanctioned. You have to be delusional to watch the alternate angle above and think Hipwood did it intentionally.

I guess we will know soon enough, who is right

At worst, it should be a careless grading, which is a $1500 fine.

It really should be thrown out altogether.

I will put my money on reckless, in that he wanted to use ump for a block, not having the foresight in knowing it would floor ump. Careless would be he didn't know ump was there, and in that situation I can't see him getting a fine at all.

This will get thrown out, not even a fine. Hipwood is running in a straight line and the Dogs player run across his path and gets pushed out. Wouldn't have even seen the umpire. This is an embarrassing referral.

Have to protect umpires. Hipwood needs to ensure he doesn't push opponent into umpire. 1 week for negligence so all players ensure they don't push other players into umpires. On another note Brisbane should be happy he gets suspended, he's an awful player

The referral is because the fixed rating system doesnt cater to it so the tribunal decides.

It was the right thing for the MRO to do.

As to the penalty, who knows.

Gards was doing his job, sticking with his man, making sure hippy couldnt get seperation by using the umpire as a block. Gards was aware the umpire was there and ran to avoid hitting him, should have gotten the free for the push in the back. But for some reason that was never happening thursday night.

This would be a great example of the AFL needing in game video review. After hippy takes the mark, pause the game for video review of what happened, take the ball back to Gardy for the push and red card hipwood on the spot, Lions down to 17 on the ground for the remainder of the game. That would have been a fair result.

Or we could set up gallows at the grounds for each match and just hang the offenders on the spot. Cut out the middle man!

Gardner pushes into Hipwood. Hipwood pushes him back. Gardner loses his footing and falls tripping the Umpire. Total accident. Careless at worst. Small fine. Move on.

No! Accidents don’t happen. Someone needs to be punished!!! The baying throng must be satiated.
