Apart from fixing up the toxic culture that was at Essendon what do Dons think is the major difference between this year and Knights first year? Both teams full of young kids, made the 8 against all expectations, new coach from outside the club?

10% worse percentage is a fair start.

Knights also lost the senior players during his time there which made his position untenable regardless of whether or not you think he was a good coach.

Better midfield and a gameplan that has the potential to stand up under finals pressure. Obviously that'll be put to the test next week if we beat Collingwood.

A focus of defending as a team rather than simply flat out attack. Not alienating experiencing players. Probably inheriting a mess from a coach who was phoning it in rather than a living legend didn't hurt either.

No Matthew Lloyd to boot out prematurely.
Should have had 1000 goals.

Faith in our coaches and game plan, our players believe in what we're building, long way to go but we're on the right path.

You just said it. Addressing the clubs culture is the main necessary difference.

Essendon’s culture had been a weight on the clubs performances for 15 years. The supplements saga inadvertently created a soft and complicit club with poor standards and lack of accountability. This fed across the entire club, from the President down. Whilst not conducive to high performance, we can see how and why it emerged as the club went to enormous lengths to heal itself and reintegrate a playing list into a broken club. It needed to be understanding, considerate, complicit, all of which worked against a hard edged, ruthless high performance operation with the highest standards and accountability.

It’s much less about the playing list and more about the culture, quality of assistant coaches and development coaches. A key appointment to facilitate this cultural shift was the appointment of Josh Mahoney who prioritised the clubs culture and its related tentacles as a necessary action. President Brashers review recognised The club needed to distance itself from the soft culture and the poor standards and lack of accountability that marred the club out of the supplements saga era. It needed a harder edge, more ruthless environment and higher standards. Mahoney and Rutten have driven this shift..

There are lots of things that form the sum of parts (EG: game plan execution, player position shifts) however Essendon was never going to realise the talent on its list and become successful until it addressed the cultural issue.

Pleasingly it appears to have done this and now it’s about staying the course to allow the rest to come to fruition over the next 2-3 years.

Knights' 1st year wasn't a finals year. It was his 2nd
in 08 we finished 12th and were the heaviest scored against team in the league.
In 09, when we made finals, we were 4th worst.

We're still not elite in that area, but we are scoring better than the Knights era
And given Truck has put a new backline together (2/3 of it is new personnel down there in Heppell, Hind, Stewart & Laverde) and our defence has been better later in the season.

From a fans perspective, i see a group with better mentality & belief in themselves.

Ben Rutten: Is not John Worsfold

There's your gameplan people. Not rocket science.

Harry Jones, Kyle Langford, Peter Wright, Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti would have to be one of the forward groups with very accurate set shots. Even Stringer and Francis (early days, admittedly) look ok here.

Maximising this simple (but not easy) aspect of the game can be absolutely crucial to a team's overall performance.

There's fewer sights more glorious in footy than Essendon overestimating where it is in the greater scheme of things.

Tails are up, posting hard, on the basis of ... won a few games in the back end of the season.

You should either grow up and stop blatantly trolling or leave this thread.

I haven’t read a serious Essendon supporter who predicted we’d be where we are.

If you want to save face, pay a compliment and appreciate what Essendon are doing because right now, you’re looking like a bit of a dill.

It's a troll, and a poor self doxing one at that. Ignore it.

Not being allowed to discuss relevant topics on the main board anymore, I’ve avoided it and forgotten how pathetic the posting can be.

Actually thought it was the bay at one stage

Had us finishing 14th in my predictions preseason (in front of North, Hawthorn and Adelaide)

Been amazed how well we have played but mostly stoked with the fact we have done it without Hurley, Hooker, Heppell and Zaka leading the way. Been driven by the next gen of players so actually looks like it xould continue to grow.

The biggest difference has been the players attack at the ball, willingness to tackle, apply pressure and at least go in and win a Contested ball. Not all players but as a team we have more doing it.
also I have noticed a few really nice taps to teammates advantage which I havent seen since Long was playing. Little things I like.
