Aren't the bulldogs getting Jones to help with defence?

Shiel definitely may not be the type of midfielder they want. But he would add another top level one in for no salary cop cost. I suspect they'd say no but I don't think its wildly off base.
Jones is 32 at the start of 2023 and out of the AFL for a year. He is a stop gap for a year or 2.

And who do we replace Shiel with? Unless we get a ready made player like Dunkley in we shouldnt be trading any of our best mids.

He was out best mid in the second half of the season and the reason we had that little purple patch where we beat Sydney,Brisbane,Gold Coast,Saints

You notice how crap our midfield was against Port and Tigers with Shiel out
You replace him with a young midfielder who you give opportunities to. We're not challenging next year, or the one after. By the time we will be, Shiel will be old. But he could help a team who is competing now, and we can afford to pay his entire salary. So it could be a win win win for Shiel, another club and us.

Shiel leaving would still leave us with Merrett, Parish, Caldwell as a core midfield group (+McGrath if we wanted) with cameos from Langford and Stringer. That is old enough bodies to support us not getting thrashed, and we can give time to Hobbs, Perkins and (likely) pick #5 from this draft.
Essendon don't have many good players and fans are happy to trade to them out for a speculative draft pick I dont get it

People put way too much value on draft picks
If he's going to be too old when we're challenging, then even if the pick is speculative it has a better chance of contributing then.
Getting blokes like Stocker and Settefiled wont fill that void.

I'm not sure fans are willing to wait anymore

20 years of crapness the club and fans have had a gutfull they want sucess now.
Boo hoo to them. Essendon has reacted to the fans before. Remember:
  • 2003-2007: Zantuck, Salmon, Haynes, Murphy, Allan, Heffernen (returned), Cole, Campo, Michael, Alvey?
  • 2012-2015: Chapman, Cooney, Leuy, Gwilt, Hartley, McKernan, M Brown?
  • 2017-2019: SSS, Shiel, Cutler, Green?
Those were also periods we refused to bite the bullet and rebuild (maybe refresh in 2012-2016). And what's it got us? Fans who are even more impatient because we haven't had any meaningful success.

The board needs to say stuff the fans, stuff the money, we're getting the rebuild right. Even if it takes 4-5 years (we're just finished year 2). And recognise that because the AFL has diluted equalisation left & right, that you need to trade out players to get draft picks to speed up the process. The key is to lose ones who won't hurt you and get lucky when you enter the draft lottery (aided by good recruiters).

I'm looking at our age profile and games profile and I don't see how we can trade Shiel.

He is not netting us that pick from the Dogs or anything earlier. Richmond's pick will be tied to Hopper/Taranto, Freo's tied to Jackson and then Sydney have no need for him with their midfield. Any pick after that is right in Davey territory so we'd probably have to trade up again to be sure we get in ahead of one.

Plus there's the fact that he's our best midfielder. I don't care what people say about Parish last year, that is literally the only year he's ever been better than Shiel and Shiel was better again this year. We will have a maximum of 9 100+ game players heading into next year, with only 1 (Heppell) having played 200 games and we aren't even sure if he's sticking around yet.

We can't trade Shiel. Parish I'll happily trade if we can get a big bodied replacement like Dunkley but only then.
I'd be happy to take Geelong or Melbourne's 2023 F1 for the right upgrade and paying his salary. Shiel is the wrong age category for us. We need to get games into young midfielders, and with him, Parish, Merrett, Caldwell there just isn't space. We've already moved McGrath who was looking really good out of the midfield because he can play a second position and we've got too many similar mids.

Let Shiel go. Give a kid time. And whether its a 2022 or 2023 pick, just take the pick and enter the draft lottery.

We're going to be unstoppable next year with the likes of Liam Stocker and Tom Phillips on our list. How are opposition teams going to contain these weapons?

Simpsons Thats The Joke GIF

Don't forget that we're bringing back Hird and Solomon, the guy who was the defensive coach for GC between 2011-2019 to teach our bunch of front runners how to defend

Tom Phillips was really good at the Pies not sure what's happened at the Hawks.

More than happy to have him our only wingers are Nic Martin and Sam Durham be nice to have another one

You didn't even list our best winger dude...

there's a case to mount for McGrath as well, if the concern is we burnt pick 1 on a small defender.

Langford, Martin, McGrath, Durham running the wings & flanks.
really don't think we need Phillips.

Dunkley, Logue, Lobb, Henry -> these are where are our needs are

Phillips costs nothing and adds depth to the area. Zero issues with adding him.

id rather stocker, setterfield, O'halloran and/or Collier-Dawkins as cheap options given they'd add depth but in areas of need.

would come down to how many spots left, but personally I'd stick with Ham over Phillips tbh.
also seems odd to chase mature options sans-coach.

Phillips is triple the player Ham is. Seriously. That's a horrible take.

Except he does cost something. A list spot. Which means he's either taking the spot of a late pick or one of the kids not yet re-signed.
This is another failing of Dodoro that has bothered me over the years, the history of undeserving experienced AFL players we have had on the list not deemed worthy enough of a best 22 position.

Cutler, Clark, Gleeson, Hams etc.

Um, what? Those example seem odd.
  • Cutler has got games, and in fact played well last year in the second half. He's not up to it, but plenty of teams give recycled players a go with only some succeeding.
  • Clark was brought in for one year when Luey unexpectedly retired. He was the best performing ruck in the WAFL. Tell me, who else was available from the state leagues who would have been better?
  • Gleeson played 97 games and before his injuries, many thought would have a long career (ironically, not me). A bit strange to knock that one.
  • Hams was offered a two year deal by Melbourne in 2020, which he rejected to stay with us. So the reigning premiers wanted him for the exact same period we did.

Think they mean dylan clarke and will hams (opposed to brayden ham). Both of whom i think.we delisted and relisted...along with gleeson.

Has a point. We seem soft when it comes to harsh calls on the list

ding ding ding ding

Jay Neagle drafted 2005, rookie listed in 2010
Anthony Long drafted 2009, rookie listed 2011
2012 we had Aerial Steinberg
2013 no previous listed players but three mature agers in Johny Rayner, Fraser Thurlow and Pambrose
2014 Shaun McKernan, Avlett, Jake Long
2015 we still had Will Hams whom we had delisted but re listed
2016 Shaun McKernan was still around
2017 we still had on the rookie list Jake Long and Shaun McKErnan,
2018 we de drafted Matt Dea
2019 we still had Zac Clarke, Will Snelling (mid season draftee), Trent Mynott, Matt Dea
2020 we had Dylan Clarke and Marty Gleeson go around again
2021 we had Dylan Clarke and to a lesser extent Alec Waterman

We always go back to what we know won't work and wonder why it isn't working. On top of that, we have hardly thrown darts at the kids in the rookie drafts in the last 10 years, it is something like 3 U18 midfielders in the rookie draft this century that Dodoro has tried. Not a great effort let alone strike rate.

Wonder if we’d have any interest in Darcy Gardiner if he leaves the lions

They might be your needs but Essendon need to face the reality of the situation that they have inflicted on themselves.

The player managers, the clubs and players know that the club is a basket case with coterie group factions calling the shots, you have no coach, no CEO and outside of players seeking a pension plan or to get a chance at getting a game no one else will come.

No established player who is in demand will be coming anywhere near Essendon. You need to sort off field off first and fast. The positive of that is that most flag lists are built through the draft so get some good mids to go with the good talls you got the last 2 years and then be patient and let them develop.

When they mature you look to top up for needs as you will be a club seen as moving into finals contention but only if off field is sorted. You guys are the members, you are more powerful than the coterie groups. Pies members stood up and look at what has happened.
