Just put this article and my thoughts in another thread so will do the same here.

While I think it would be unlikely that Bomber would come back (would love it though) this whole "Director" thing is interesting. From what I hear the director will be a game day coach while the actual coach helps out on game day and does a lot of the other stuff a regular coach would.

Cant imagine a restructure like that unless Hird was involved. Cant think of another logical explination for creating that position if Williams, Bomber or any of the others were getting the coaching job.

But if it turns out to be Bomber and Hird I would repeatedly molest myself :D

I really don't see why either Hird or Bomber would bother with Essendon. It's back to square one for Bomber and it's way too early for Hird. No previous coaching experience, not enough c*** in him, extremely lucrative business he's already running and therefore not under the same pressure to coach as others are.

Hoping he's not feeling the peer pressure from Voss and Bucks because Voss has proved he's ****ing hopeless while Pie fans may be shuffling their feet uneasily if Malthouse is pushed out while the team is hitting their peak.

Hirdy clearly has one of the finest footballing brains going around as evidenced by his media work. Is it the amount of c**t that makes Paul Roos as good a coach as he is? He is clearly an inspiration to his players, and I believe that is exactly the type of coach Hird has the potential to become. Here is a guy that will demand respect not by asking for it, but having earn't it as a premiership captain, and one of the greatest leaders the club has ever had.

There has been a revolution started by the new board in sacking knights. As tough as it was, they could see, as most other astute supporters could see, that the club was absolutely loosing its position as a superpower and was in danger of becoming the forgotten force, as has happened to Richmond. If this appointment happens and Thompson is on board with Hird, I have absolutely no doubt we will be returning to the top in a big way.

Finally, I really don't believe our list is as bad as our season has reflected, and I think Hird believes this. It is a massive challenge to take on, but clearly he sees a lot of potential in the players, and I truly believe his influence, along with Bombers, could advance the progress of this young group by 2-3 years.

An exceptionally exciting prospect in my book.

Lions made the finals for the first time since '04 last season. They even won a final, pretty sure he's not hopeless.

His recruiting, yep, hopeless... but everyone is a genius in hindsight. Fevola the Coleman Medalist, Raines the nuggety back pocket (we could do with him), X Clarke the highly skilled midfielder, if he got his body right he'd be very handy and Maguire, he was playing pretty good footy in the middle stages of the season. Staker for Dalziell - meh. He put all his eggs in the one basket but they were looking unbelievable at the start of this season. Nothing wrong with a coach trying to win a premiership. With regards to salary cap, I'm sure he's not their accountant/football operations manager.

Must admit that I tipped them for top 4 this season.

Thompson - has come out and said that there is no chance he will come to Essendon
Hird - Hasn't said it. My guess is a senior head coach for two years, Hird assistant.

He said that in the middle of coaching Geelong in another finals series. What else is he supposed to say? It is highly unlikely he will come back i know but he couldn't of said anything else. From now on is interesting.

My biggest fear is we'll have too many Chiefs and not enough Indians!

Everyones role would need to be super clear and each party involved would need to 100% commited to playing that role.

He actually said that he wouldn't be the head coach at Essendon, but was very, very hesitant to ensure that he'd be at Geelong next year- to the point of contending that he expects to be at Geelong "at this stage".

For me, that's a pretty big jump, and reflects an underlying conflict of interest for Bomber. We could be seeing him in some sort of position next year.

I know its getting a bit picky with what he said, but Thompson said he wont come back to COACH essendon... Maybe director of coaching?

haha pretty much what i was trying to say ^^^ but you said it better :thumbsu:

Damn it!! I just can't wait for this thing to be announced......please Hirdy, let it be true!

I like the idea of him not being match day coach at first too....

I'm actually very impressed with how the board has gone about selecting a coach to this point.

They've shown a willingness to be patient, as well as a recognition of how important this selection is for the entire club. Word of the potential involvement of the likes of Thompson, Hird, Laidley and Williams is inordinately encouraging, and reflects the fact that the board are not taking the decision lightly.

The involvement of even three of those names would send a resounding message to everyone hoping for the demise of this great establishment, and garner massive support for the club again.

I dare say it would undoubtedly breed success in coming years, too.

Pretty sure patience was used in selecting the last coach. We went through a fairly vigorous series of interviews/presentations until only two candidates were left.

I think they showed a distinct lack of insight in selecting a man with limited coaching success in the past.

It would obviously be speaking too soon to say that we have covered all areas, but to appoint a coaching panel involving Hird, Laidley, Williams and Thompson would be a step in the right direction to affirming future success and covering some key proponents of past success, tactical nous, game day ability and player and supporter respect.

Of course, genuine judgement needs to be restricted until the appointment process has been completed, however at this stage I'm pleased with how they've managed the situation.

Another positive that is allowing us to take our time is that we are the only club looking for a coach. There are some good candidates out there, that will hopefully allow us to assemble the best possible team.
