slightly o/t but where's that grab from? What a ***** act.

Re: Essendon list changes

The final list lodgement is between the ND and PSD and also considering our first rookie pick is something like pick 12 any player that is overlooked that we would like a closer look at can be invited to train beforehand.

As previously stated it is rare to get a quality AFL player in the ND.

It is usually average players or players new to the system.

Use the PSD if you have a specific player in mind - otherwise use the ND.

Two separate issues

1) EFC rarely invites players to do a pre-season with the club

2) Change to the rookie rules means that the last rookie is nominated a week before the season starts. This means that you may have 3 or 4 players doing a preseason and playing in practice matches.

To you're first point, we do. We show strong interest in them during the pre-season only for us to overlook them with them later on becoming a revelation and a star in their first half a season  :p

Re: Essendon list changes

I will be expecting some more names to be delisted come the second list lodgement is due..

Would not surprise me to see us turn over Atkinson and Lonergan (although Lonergan may stay, midfielders are our weak link and would allow the feeling I am getting about us taking Gorringe with pick 8).

Would be good to see us have a few more selections in the draft as it runs quite deep.
I think you are being more hopeful than realistic. Essendon has clearly stated we are not going beyond 47, why debate it, that's what is happening. Picks 8, 30, 47 & PSD4.
Unless somehow Houli does a backflip, Atko and Lonergan stay. I personally see them being retained as recognition we need more mids. I believe the strategy is to keep what we've got for now and add to them. Then by this time next year, hopefully we've picked 2 mids that look the goods, perhaps even your boy Silverlock has played a few games and shown a bit, then we can move on the likes of Dyson, Lonergan, Atkinson, etc with an eye to picking another couple of mids without sacrificing depth in the midfield.

Re: Essendon list changes

Could John Anthony be the nugget in the PSD.

Have some interest - But he is a defender.

He isnt a defenders arseh*le. He is a forward and probably alot better than a couple of guys we plan to play forward this year. Cant stand him though and seems most of his team mates cant either.

He is a defender - Only played forward when Collingwood was short in this area.

Could release Hurley to play forward.

Better hope that the draft is strong in 2011 - And by all reports it is weaker than in 2010.

Hurley is a defender, he only played forward when Essendon was short in this area.

Seriously though, Matthew Lloyd is adamant Hurley's best spot is CHB, he says Hurley just doesn't have the natural goal sense of a champion forward. (Lloyd also makes the same criticism of Gumbleton).

Re: Essendon list changes

Ah, no, it's a mechanism to bypass restraint of trade. The only reason the AFL have been able to justify not having free agency

OK, so with the AFL practically admitting they are introducing 'Free Agency', I think that the AFL will scrap the Pre Season Draft.

Here is something for everyone to look at.

Pre Season Draft:

(2009 Pre Season Draft)

Liam Jurrah *
Josh Carr
Hayden Skipworth *
Chris Johnson
Tom Rockliff *
Ben Cousins*

(2008 Pre Season Draft)

Joel Mcdonald
Dylan Grimes *
Adam Mcphee
Daniel Bradshaw
Ryan Neates *
Scott Harding
Kyle Hardingham *

(2007 Pre Season Draft)

David Goudis
Darren Pfeiffer
Stefan Martin *
Scott Welsh
John Williams *
Josh Head *
Pat McGinnity *
Tom Bellchambers *

(2006 Pre Season Draft)

Cain Ackland
Mal Michael
Ben Ross *
Adam Cockshell *
Josh Thurgood
Kent Kingsley
Matthew Clarke
Chris Bryan
Cameron Cloke

(2005 Pre Season Draft)

Dylan McLaren
Sam Iles *
Brent Guerra
Scott Camporeale
Matt White *
Ben Fixter *
Cameron Thurley
Matt Thomas *
Jason Porplyzia *
Chris Heffernan

In the past 5 years, 40 players have been drafted or given a second chance in the Pre Season Draft, 19 players (47.5%) of players have been drafted straight from a lower level or have been given there first chance in the big time.

The Pre Season Draft was just what you mentioned, a chance for other clubs to try and lure >player x< into and draft them straight onto their primary list.

I feel that the way the Pre Season Draft has gone, it is becoming more like an earlier rookie selection than what it was initially introduced for.

As I said earlier, I feel that the AFL may scrap the Pre Season Draft in the wake of 'free agency' entering into the AFL domain.

OK, here is something for you to ponder/ or anyone else for that matter.

These are the players out of contract: (age/games played also)

Atkinson, Jarrod, 25 years old, 17 games
Lonergan, Samuel, 23 years old, 53 games

Crameri, Stuart, 22 years old, 3 games
Marigliani, Marcus, 25 years old, 2 games
Quinn, Michael, 20 years old, 8 games
Silverlock, Tait, 20 years old, yet to debut

So with this in mind, what do you expect us to do?

We currently are taking 3 picks in the ND (Still, Slattery and Laycock) with the addition of Houli allowing for the elevation of Howlett, and two picks (Bock and J.Williams) in the rookie draft.

Also, bearing in mind that Essendon FC will be adding David Meli to our list as an international scholarship holder outside the primary list.

I am slowly starting to come around to Lonergan staying as "midfield depth", whilst Atkinson in his 3 year at Essendon has yet to cement himself into our best 22 after being recruited as a mature aged recruit.

Marigliani and Crameri, despite working hard for there opportunities were simply recruited as 'insurance' for us. If we were to recruit for the future, why did we not recruit a highly rated young midfielder that was overlooked like a Fasolo, or even a highly recruited Kyle Hartigan or Chris Luff?

Were looking for the short term and not the long term..

If they decide to keep one (or both) of Marigliani and Crameri, I could say we will go for Gorringe at pick 8 (as the EFC may be happy with where our midfield is at).

The thoughts I have echoed for months now

Hurley has played eight full games as a forward - He has kicked 4 goals on three occasions.

Name another forward who has done the same in his first 8 games.

Hurley kicks goals - They are worth their weight in gold.

Re: Essendon list changes

not sure if that's an accurate quote of Lloyd's, but I'd suggest anyone who was at the Round 22 2009 Hawks game, like I was, & saw Hurley swing onto his wrong side and off 2 steps launch a scud missile through the middle of the goals from outside 50 could surely not think such a thing...

It's bullshit. I've seen Hurley go well up forwards & not so well, but he sure as shit knows where the goals are & how to kick em

Re: Essendon list changes

Now I am not saying he cannot play forward at all, but at times when he was forward, he looked lost and ledto the wrong spots, often into the same space as the CHF or resting ruckmen.

Why should we play Hurley forward any ways?

Joey Daniher is on his way :D:D

Joey Daniher.

Do you plan to be rebuilding till 2015/2016.

I don't know where you heard that but Lloyd has repeatedly stated on SEN that he sees Hurley as our most "natural" forward and would play him there without a doubt.

Re: Essendon list changes

Further to Lance's argument.

Look at current list of tall forwards

Neagle - Doubt he will make it.
Carlisle - Will be a very good player/maybe dominant - but another two years away
Gumbleton - Still developing and plays away from goal

Hope that C.Daniher can get fit - Appeals as a lead up forward who can run both ways. He may add balance to the forward line.

Not a lot ready to kick goals.

I get the feeling we may actually take a tall forward in the draft somewhere, be it in the main draft or in the rookie drat..

Wouldn't hurt I suppose?

1) Happens every year, mostly for rookie positions but Rodan trained one year, same as Barlow last year.

2) I dont even know what this means. Im assuming your talking after the rookie draft which is a different topic.
