Preview Essendon vs Melbourne

Judging from your 'AFL predictions thread', which had us 12th/13th.... eat up

No need to be like that- I'm the first to admit that I judged Essendon incorrectly. I'm certainly not alone there though.

In fact my entire ladder prediction was off by a long margin (so far)- but I wont be the last person to make a pre-season prediction incorrectly!

Not to mention this gold:

When it was actually Melbourne who were a) scheduled to wear their away strip since b) there is no home/away in NAB semi-finals and c) they couldn't manage to get it printed right, hence the late change of plans.
Obviously Essendon's fault for merely doing as they were asked & not pre-empting Melbourne's incompetence.

When you assume...

Jesus mate stalk much?

And not too sure how that mistake is relevant to anything here?

You're a strange individual who seems hell bent on taking this thread off-topic...

Would appear that Essendon have been doing a bit of work during the week off in an effort to scupper the apparent problems clubs are having with the bye.

Essendon's squad - minus those who made the trip to Geelong - trained Saturday morning. Means that all those available have been able to keep miles in the legs and find touch in the lead up to the game on Friday.

Not a bad summation mate, I'll just put a little Melbourne perspective to it if you don't mind.

Forwards
Watts was not amazing on Friday night in tough conditions for big guys, but he was far from our worst with 20 touches. His last 5 games he's avaeraged about 20 touches, 5 marks and a goal which isn't too bad. Jurrah was disapointing however- showing some lazy traits atm and rumours of him carrying a knock don't excuse his lack of chase & hard work.

Frawley v Hurley
Probably spot on with Frawley v Hurley, though I wouldn't be surprised to see us try someone else intially and hope that Hurley can be held whilst Frawley provides run out of defence.

Rucks
Martin may be a part time ruckman, but he has been one of our few shining lights this season. Since Jamar went down he has had 21, 36 & 40 hitouts each game (albeit against Goldstein, Kosi & Hampson), whilst averaging about 17 touches. This will be his biggest test this week, as your ruck division (when Ryder is in form) is arguably the best in the comp behind maybe West Coast only. Expect to see Max Gawn debut this week to help out, exciting fella who this Saturday beat Ben Hudson all over the ground in the VFL. I expect Essendon to beat us in the ruck due to more overall quality, but it might be a little closer than you think.

Moloney v Watson
Beamer has suffered without Jamar. He has been shouldering the load of the clearances for the most part, and can't keep doing it. A few in's this week should help him a little, but Jobe (if he is right to play) is in Brownlow medal form and won't be stopped no matter what Melbourne try. All we can do is hope he's a little rusty after a couple of weeks off!

Melbourne should welcome back a couple of players which is handy, but it won't be enough, Bombers by 37 for me.

IN: Trengove, Scully, Dunn, Gawn (debut), Mcdonald (debut)

OUT: Newton, Warnock, Morton, Bennell, Bate
Cheers mate, I wasn't too sure about Melbourne. Gawn looked a little raw last time I watched him- has talent, but just didn't look like he was ready for AFL football. If he beat Hudson though, I might have a look at him on Friday :thumbsu:.

Newton and Warnock are hacks, the sooner you get rid of them, the better for you guys IMO

It's going to be a very long season for you chump. :)

You're preaching to the converted here trust me! Warnock should make way for a debutant this week, and hopefully Juice picks up a knock midweek and gets the boot too- they're disgustingly bad. Warnock will go down in history as the first (and probably will forever be the only) full back to be tactically substituted out of the game by a team in damage control mode

And yeah I didnt think Gawn was ready either, but he had a good game against (the out of form) Hudson and a couple of decent performances before that too. He will help, but I'd imagine Bellchamebers et al will give him a very tough baptism should he play.

Also @ BrownPearHookers - you've quoted 2 Melbourne supporters (neither of whom I ever see on our board), one Collingwood and one Port Adelaide there. So don't get the impression from those quotes that we're all diks! :p

Such a great get with these quotes, well done on the research.

Another reason to put this insipid football club back in their box on Friday Night. The biggest glory hunting supporters in the AFL by so far it isn't funny. They'll be all out in force this week (just like they will in the Queens Birthday the week after), the two games a year the fickle types that follow this mob bother to go to the football. The guernseys come out of the wardrobe twice a year, the 'LG' sponsored Melbourne guernseys with the number 9 (Neitz) on the back or the David Schwarz or Adam Yze. They make me truly f'ing sick.

A 2000 Grand Final style result is only going to do this game justice on Friday Night. I love the usual suspects earlier in this thread claiming the scoreboard flattered Essendon in their game last year, despite Melbourne receiving SEVEN goals from 50m penalties which resulted in goals and Essendon having SIX more scoring shots for the game. Melbourne scored a famous 19 point win that day, rated as one of their "finest" under Bailey (shows you how well the shit kickers have gone in the last few years). 4 wins over Victorian sides in something like 46 games... complete, utter RABBLE.

You won't get a soft two or three goal MCG win over the likes of a soft interstate team this week, Dees.

They were dancing in the aisles at the Dons woes last year in that one meeting, it's time we well and truly send the coffin down on their 2011 season this week.

This one needs to get brutal. We can be our own worst enemies though. Surely Hird and Thompson won't accept a soft loss to this mob under the Friday Night lights.

Again thanks for the research on some Melbourne supporters opinions on our list. Certainly interesting reading. As usual all huff and puff in the off season and then fall in a heap.

Hey Guys lets keep the thread on topic and not crap on about other issues.
My preview is that i think after a sluggish qtr or 2 i think essendon will be to good and win by 6 goals maybe more.
You guys have been impressive since the word go and i must give credit were credits due and you guys are a top 6 side,Your playing group have stepped up and you have unearthed a couple of gems.Dont get me wrong i love beating esseendon not that thats happened much in the last decade....lol.
I hope Melbourne play well and its a close game but on form i have to pick essendon by 36pts.

Mate you're clearly pretty angry so I probably shouldn't reply- but seeing as im the only one who said last years result flattered you I assume are u referring to me as 'the usual suspects'? As I don't think I've ever posted on this board I find that confusing... I was referring to the fact Melbourne were up by about 8 goals until about 10 mins left when Essendon kicked some late consolation goals. If u think that the 50 metro penalties are the reason why u lost then I suggest u rewatch the game. Essendon were down on confidence, undermanned and under coached. Dees deserved the spoils that day. And fwiw there were no Dees fans 'dancing in the aisles anywhere near me.

I'll leave ur vitriol about our supporters alone as u clearly hate us for your own reasons, but I'll point out again that the comments u reacted to were from a Port fan, a Pies fan, and two Melbourne fans whom I haven't seen post on our board. I'm sure if u had a look you could find some Essendon fans making silly claims/trolls somewhere on bigfooty as well :p

Anyway enough from me, let's hope it's a good game, but I reckon the Dons will do it pretty easily.:thumbsu:

Like the look of Gawn. Raw, but has a real dip. Pretty solid frame as well.

Don't be surprised if he neutralises the rucks like Browne did a few weeks ago for the Tigers.

Bellchambers, Hille and Ryder will need to pull their fingers out and actually start winning some hitouts to advantage. They've been disgraceful considering the opposition in recent games. Absolutely pitful.

The word hate would flatter Melbourne, so just an extreme dislike. I could make a good case for probably 16 other sides in the competition where I have similar or worse feelings.

Scully and Trengrove will make a huge difference to Melbourne this week.

If we go in half arsed like we did against the tigers then this is a real danger game.

With the media jumping on the Bailey bashing train (Including hypocrite Garry Lyon who one week is saying that the "Blood sport" around the next coaches to be sacked needs to stop, then the following week says Bailey is coaching for his career), the Demons will be wanting to put in a very competitive game.

I'm hoping we will come out like we did against the Bulldogs and get on another roll.

Our run home is pretty tough so we need to win.

Bombers by 14.

Macca I love your passion for the Dons and agree most part. Wont be suprised to see Scully back but he wont be in full fitness so he shouldnt make much of a difference
