I think these still exist, although not as strongly as 15 years ago.

Maybe some of the non-Victorians could help out with their clubs because I wouldnt have a clue about them.

Melbourne- Anglo, Protestant
Western Bulldogs- Greek, Vietnamese
Geelong- Anglo, Protestant
Carlton- Italian
Collingwood- Lebanese
Essendon- Italian

Any others? Am I wrong on any of these?

Bulldogs - Vietnamese. As my other half and her family are bulldogs i go to a few games of there's every year.

While they sit in the cheer squad i wander the game. Vietnamese, just don't see any so I don't think as a group there particularly interested.

Greeks i knows go for the Pies.

Most Greeks 35 and over tend to support Collingwood, Richmond, Carlton and to a lesser extent Hawthorn.

All the above is correct. The Pies are the #1 supported team by Greeks by a long way.

THe Western Bulldogs failure to court the Vietnamese or other Asian communities that make up such a big portion of the Werstern suburbds populationy is a huge reason why their membership has stagnated (in relative terms to other Melbourne clubs). They need to be far more pro-active with their local community.

Alot of maco's support Collingwood.

Essendon have quite a few italian and maltese fans. The Italians who support Essendon though arent the muzza knob ends Carlton seem to attract.

There are also quite a few Vietnamese Bombers and Hawthorn supporters (Springvale area has a high number of Vietnamese Hawks). You will find this relates the high numbers of Vietnamese people migrating to Australia during the early 80's (with the Hawks and to a lesser extent the Bombers dominating the 80's)

collingwood has as many if not more Irish, Italian, Greek, etc supporters then they do Lebanese

many of the original Carlton football club founders were of jewish descent funnily enough

Maybe I have over-estimated the Vietnamese support for the Doggies.

Have they been actively courting their support?

They probably only started this in the last decade as my father who used to own a business in Footscray told me. Some of the Bulldogs players visited local businesses to chat about AFL and ask them if they have ever been at a game. My dad surprised them by telling them that he was a friend of Scott Wynd, but also a Bombers supporter since 1981.

collingwood the same

Seems to be said carlton supporters had their parents grow up through there, where as essendon/woods/roy supporters grew up more the collingwood/fitzroy brunswick areas

The Jewish association through the late Richard Pratt who saved them from financial ruin.

Doesn't Melbourne have Jewish associations (other than Joseph Gutnick)?

Collingwood also has a fair few Croats, Serbs, Greeks, Italians etc. As well as a lot of Anglo Aussies.
We are the so called catholic club

Even made a banner for Pope John paul II

True Essendon and Hawthorn were the dominant teams then but there were also a lot of some Vietnamese living in Richmond at the time who went for the Tigers. By and large they were newly arrivals who knew nothing about Aussie rules and were more interested in soccer. Their kids are more likely to be playing footy and barracking for a team now.

Personally I think I'm in the minority who support Geelong.

I used to work for a large company in footscray. And i can tell u that a lot of vietnamese workers there barracked for the doggies. I just dont think they go to the games.

as a person living in the middle east, there seems to be alot of those funny australian people that support collingwood!:D

the more radical locals here seem to like the bombers.........go figure?;)
