Why are Nickelback so hated? They have millions of adoring fans and hundreds of positive reviewers and critics. Why exactly? Especially considering there are many similar bands as them, either before or after their forming, that are liked very much.

I like Nickelback. Granted I don't love them, but I think the "The Long Road" album is pretty solid modern rock. If I have to pinpoint their hate, it seems they have more than happy to take the lowest common denominator of lyrical content, and that is what most people hear, the lyrics. They don't bother to listen to the music.

This is why there is a double standard regarding Nickelback and other modern rock, ala Foo Fighters. It is all in the words.

...
Gold in itself has no value whatsoever. It can't be really used for anything practical. Yet, it is THE most precious mineral to man, because they don't know why, it's just a traditional thing, passed down from eon to eon thru history.

But now YOU all know why.

It does actually, it is an exceptional conductor of electricity, backbone of society.

Nickleback are victims of their own success. Too many "singles" from their albums doing well and suddenly the greatest hits album is full of the songs they wrote to pay the bills.

Not that I'm a fan, bit I can see how it happens.

My favourite Nickelback song is a short little ditty bout having you arse kicked in a fight that probably won't ever be wheeled out live

Drop D tuning to the max!

In 10 minutes I'll be laying out flat on the floor
8 minutes I'm losing it a little bit
5 minutes your description might be starting to fit
3 to go and I'm forgetting all that I've ever known
I won't be standing up for long
I better learn how to crawl

Anyone can write Nickelback/AC-DC songs....

Hey baby you're looking real sweet
It's cold, come on over, we can make some heat
I got a red hot poker in my pants
You've got a warm fire that needs a lance
etc

Bon Scott era lyrics were a cut above. I vehemently disagree.

Anyone can do typical, shallow, insightful self help Foo Fighter lyrics.

There's clouds in the sky
But it won't dent my
Chance to make good
On the things that I would

Long to be right
Wrong, is to fight
Love is the chance, and
Soul is the dance

Oh no disagreement there --- foo fighters suck hard

Nah, they aiight to by me. The music rocks, the guitars and drums and bass have a solid foundation, it sounds good and it can be sung along too.

Make no mistake, it is much harder to do that successfully album after album than it is to make prog/alternative music for a niche audience.

I disagree vehemently with both your propositions.
Foo fighters are shit.
And it's much harder to make different music and lyrics from album to album, in itself, but also whilst keeping a fanbase together and critics at bay.
Especially some seminal artists out there who in their journey INVENTED new types of genres.
Stock standard rock/blues will always sell -- case in point, foo fighters, nickelback, etc.

Nickelback are like a poor man's AC/DC.
It's that repeat formula style of band that never changes -- same riffs, beats, same cheesy sexual innuendos.

The difference though, CG, is that AC/DC are doing what comes naturally to them, writing the music they want.

Nickelback have intentionally pigeonholed themselves. I know they could make heavier, harder, metal music if they wanted. They have the chops, but they have decided to play is safe. To play the formula. They could push the boundaries of their own creativity, but they don't want to.

(tbh that cowboys from hell is sloppy - I could do better)

His voice is absolutely beastly there. Better than Hetfield.

That's the difference. I dare you to give them a watch CG.

A major criticism of AC/DC thruout their career was the exact same thing -- same tired refrain, pigeonholed. It's just AC/DC are huge and kinda did that first.

However, consider Led Zeppelin -- a band i hate, but!, from album to album all their songs/albums evolve and incorporate so many different intricacies of music, beats, chords, progressions, etc, tho they're also a stock standard rock/blues band.

Whereas AC/DC it's just the same old shit.

The Foo Fighters first two albums were decent hard rock albums but once they released Learn to Fly, they then transitioned into one of the vanilla radio rock bands i was talking about.

But it doesn't, does it?

You stopped at two bands, before resorting to etc?

AC/DC have done it for 40 years. 15 odd albums. It will never be done again. Nickelback and FF are already on the decline after not even 2 decades.

Only reason their first album was any good was because they just used unfinished Nirvana songs.

Did you listen to the clips I provided?

LZ deviated too often from rock - they couldn't sustain it IMO. They had to resort to other varieties. AC/DC done it track after track, album after album. That is far more difficult to do than to make different songs across genres.

Both great bands, but one are rock gods undisputed, and the other probably are also rock gods, after you strip away the folk, the reggae, the acoustic...
