consciousness? is merely a state of self awareness and having sentience/imagination/problem solving capacity/empathy to name a few, i fail to see how these could not all be a function of an evolved brain.

What is it, that distinguishes mankind from the animal kingdom?....And how do we account for that difference in evolutionary theory?

Sensing the predator in the tall grass.

The animal just pisses off and doesn't have the brain capacity to apply that extra layer of imagination.

The human runs off then thinks... hang on there is nothing there. Why did I think there was something there? Where did that feeling of another presence come from? It MUST be something because I am me and I know what I know: and what I know is that SOMETHING was in that tall grass. I thought of my dead uncle this morning. Maybe it was him telling me he is watching over me? If that is it... where does he live? How did he get there? Who are his friends in this other world? Who leads his tribe?

What does he know that I don't know? How can I use this to get more food and a better wife?

The consciousness didnt just drop from the sky or put in there by a magic man ol mate. It evolved, follow the evolution from homo erectus and see the evolution of intelligence. The fact that Neanderthals who are extinct were no less intelligent than an average human speaks volumes. An average IQ of Homo habilis for example was 53! that was excellent for primitive species trying to survive in a crazy world.

Again you are following a similar pattern of argument, "i dont know hence.....". Well then you must explain how did the intermediate species get there? and how come their evolution of intelligence matches the evolutionary map perfectly?

Intelligence doesn't automatically denote survival, especially if other, more intelligent species are in competition with you. There are other factors too - species which have more offspring will overwhelm via sheer numbers.

Crocodiles suit their environment extremely well, hence why any changes to them over the course of millions of years have been minor.

I agree with certain contexts of that article....Animals & man certainly partake in many shared characteristics....But I'd still agree with Aristotle in saying that the divine spark of reason, along with the thin outer layer of our brains; Significantly divides us from all other creatures in a very unique way.

I'd reckon that point to be self-evident. Scientific animal psychology articles not withstanding.

Whole H.E were not as intelligent as homo sapiens, homo sapiens came from H.E and H.H. Neaderthals are our cousins...humans didnt evolve from Neanderthals. The evolution of intelligence can be seen from H.H. H.E to H.S clearly, IQ inceases from specie to specie.

I'm aware that Dolphins,, Elephants & Whales have larger brains than humans, but it's not like they can alter their environment like we can....That transcendent, abstract ability is a pretty formidable difference maker.....Wouldn't you agree?

Having more people around means better chances of finding resources in times of scarcity and working efficiently.

There's a growing body of research that suggests that Neanderthals demonstrated higher cognitive functions that we tend to associate with Homo sapiens. What our survival and their extinction means was that our brains were better suited to the challenges of survival at the time, even though their bodies might have been the more capable.

I'm guessing you missed the gist of my post, but having re-read it, I can see my point wasn't framed so well.

Given Neanderthal man, Homo Erectus & Homo Sapiens are distinct species; much as Orangutans, Gorillas & Spider Monkeys are!...Then how can one species mate with the other to produce a 3rd species?

You also seem to be claiming here, that a bigger brain & higher intelligence doesn't guarantee survival success, on the one hand....While claiming that humans somehow superseded Neanderthals & Homo Erectus BECAUSE of our superior intelligence.

Now, even assuming we did 'evolve' from these 2 entirely different species....If we came from them, then where did our extra intelligence come from?

You can see my confusion surely?....More than this....Given their relatively high intelligence, you'd of thought at least a small pocket of Neanderthals or Homo Erectus would still be extant somewhere....After all, the world has only just become fully explored quite recently.

Where are all these other 'species' of Homonids?....After all, there are plenty of different monkey species?
