FA Compensation - Guessing Competition

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

All these low ball guesses are kidding themselves. Ask yourself what sort of trade would need to be done to get these players to move around last year - that's your answer. Goddard should be Band 1, and rightly so - he's worth more than Wellingham who went for a first round pick, regardless of age.

If the AFL doesn't look at each draft on a case by case basis and adjust compensation accordingly, then what is the point of letting them decide it after FA has ended? Just give the clubs a formula and let them work out for themselves if it's worth it or not to match offers.

That's not the point of free agency. Forget about trade deals or the merits of the draft. And I wouldn't be surprised if the AFL scrapped compo down the track.

You clearly don't understand free agency. The Byrnes and Rivers moves weren't contingent on each other, so there was no trade involved. It's the players decision to move, not the clubs.

And I wouldn't be surprised if the AFL don't take too kindly to Port Adelaide's attempt to flaunt free agency with the Monfries deal. We'll see what happens with the Pearce compo.

How is doing a normal trade with a club and giving them something for a player 'flaunting' free agency? You make it sound like Monfries was a new Veale deal.

The AFL said that the compo picks are there to benefit the clubs. So expect some surprises.

The contract that you're offering Monfries suggests that he's worth more than pick 60+ in real terms.

Essendon gain very little from the trade and obviously lose nothing because Monfries could walk for nothing. But your mob see it as a massive advantage as far as your FA compo goes. We'll see how it plays out today.

Why should Goddard be worth a first round pick? He was drafted for a first round pick 10 years ago, gave St kilda 9 years of service, they chose to let him go to a rival club without matching the offer and they want back what they paid for him. Its not like he went to an expansion club where they were at an unfair advantage. Essendon obviously valued him more. No FA should be worth a first rounder once expansion clubs are taken out of it.

What would Goddard be worth in a trade? What would have Essendon had to give StKilda to get him? Im sure NO one can argue Goddard isnt worth pick 13.

Just for clarification.

I said effectively. Had they not taken Byrnes they would have two compo picks. Now it appears they will get one. Its just another stuff up by the Demons.

In a trade no doubt, but why have an age limit on FA if you get a first round pick anyway, I think it defeats the purpose of the FA system.

Goddard & free agency

Young FA - tick
Top 3 salary at new club - tick

Band 1
Doubt it, they've said compo waon't be as generous as the GWS/GC compo, if Ward was only worth band 2 on 800K then Goddard can't be worth band 1 on less than that if it's less generous.

Baffling why Melbourne didn't have a token trade with the Cats for Brynes, who would have looked after him.

Goddard - Band 1
Pearce - Band 2
Chaplin - Band 3
Rivers - Band 4
Knights - Band 4
Brynes - Band 5
Lynch - Band 4
Agree about Byrnes, perhaps we though the positive publicity might be worth more than a better pick.

but why should saints be FULLY compensated for not paying a player what he is worth on open market AND out of contract? they didnt even consider matching Essendons offer. clearly they dont rate him as "Band 1".

Free Agency should be about helping players get to the clubs they want to go to.

It should NOT be about screwing the clubs they left.

The AFL have to be stingy with this or it completely ****s the draft.

I know we won't get anything because Rivers is worth more than Byrnes and that is fair enough.

But if we didn't get Rivers we would be looking at a 3rd rounder for Byrnes and we would have just delisted him if he wasn't picked up by Melbourne.

Guys like Byrnes, Knights, Murphy, Lynch should not get any compo at all. Tough t***ies if you lose players of this calibre.

It's just such a big penalty for a team trying to rebuild and making major changes to their list that the third round of the draft is going to extend forever, and if you need to get 6 or so new players in through the draft, you are really scraping the bottom of the barrell with your draft selections.

And I say this when my team won't be affected by this at all this year, our first rounder will probably drop a spot for Goddard, but our next pick isn't to 70 and we will probably use it for a rookie upgrade anyway.

I'd sooner there be no compo. The real compensation you get is the salary cap space freed up to sign some other player. To be honest, I think I'd like a simplified system where salary cap is the only resource for recruiting players. At the moment we have draft picks of various kinds and salary cap space, and a lot of ridiculous systems to try to relate the value of one to the other. Get rid of the draft, and we solve a huge number of the numerous problems that have arisen as a result of an excessively complex system (see: tanking, clubs losing players to 'the go home factor', having 6 or 7 different kinds of picks in 4 different drafts with different rules about how to determine the order etc). Make all uncontracted players free agents.

You're going to get more loyalty from players when they don't just get sent to whichever club happens to draft them, whether they like it or not. Clubs who show loyalty to players are going to end up with better lists due to players being willing to stay at that club for under market value, and players who show loyalty to clubs are more likely to play in premierships. At the moment, a club can pay a couple of stars overs to lure them to the club, and just pay their younger players unders, because those players, for the most part, don't really have much choice in what they accept.
