They know more than bigfooty shitposters. That’s why they work for kotaku and don’t post on bigfooty.

Anyway, I appreciate you approaching the argument somewhat sincerely. It is largely correct save for a key point; the nature of the online pvp drives the use of nukes as a reward; as a tool to desire, their application something to pursue.

This clashes sharply with the previous games which, as mentioned, treated them largely as something far morally murkier, evoking mixed emotions as it pressed home the point: there are no winners in war, just survivors. Often alone, even.

No matter how it occurred or who tried to justify it, in the name of gods and monsters, it always ended the same way. Kinda shitty. With lots of death.

In 76 nukes are now the ultimate goal; unambiguously good. Get KEYS. Get NUKES. Get LOOT.

That’s different. That has changed.

War has changed.

Yeah good call. The feeling for nukes in this game is that they're probably more comparable to the tactical nuke in Call of Duty than anything seen in a Fallout RPG.

I guess losing that moral choice is the collateral damage of making an online shooter based in the Fallout universe. Morality doesn't matter if it isn't a role playing game.

Yep, pretty much. Clearly some people will care these choices - the ambiguity - are gone.

It’s kinda similar to karma missing in 4. To others who never cared, or didn’t understand what was going on anyway, it’s nbd.

In this case, some even see it as a worthy price to pay for an online fallout game -or at least one with a fallout skin.

Me? I’m in the first group. But I’m just a bigfooty shitposter.

i would assume people have the choice of acting on possessing the codes, but i get what you're saying.

76 looks like a big change for a lot of the more grizzled fans (i started at 3, but i love the first 2 courtesy of growing up on playing other turn-based isometric stuff), but even for fallout's horde of new tweenage fans it's a bit of a shift from #4. one thing that made the basebuilding successful for those that liked it was it was still within the single person framework. the settlements are now somewhere that can be nuked to some extent.
(i can't be arsed reading any more information so apologies if i've gotten that and thus my entire premise wrong)

then once you set off the nukes you can repeat a whole bunch of radiant quests all over again to nuke some more... for more loot. the heavy emphasis on collecting trash is one of the things that made #4 so boring. fight, collect, return to base, fight, collect, return to base. it's like they've finally dropped the facade entirely. not going to bother with a story, not going to bother with quests that don't lead to more loot.

be interesting if they assigned servers based on karma. probably wait for reviews.

Karma system to me is integral to the themes of Fallout since the 90's, it was always about helping humanity rebuild (whether through compromise or force) vs being a selfish dick and seeing how people react to that, seeing how that affected the world/characters at the end of your story etc. Nuking places for fun is just not Fallout. I know FO 3 (nuke megaton and stroke villain moustache, I know I know) and 4 had their problems but at least they tried in their own way, this makes me feel flat for the future of the franchise. It's been many years now since NV which they didn't even make.

People have been begging to play online in a game like Skyrim or FO 3, but it was with the intent of exploring the world with friends, not a world with nothing but other players, Bethesda just doesn't get it in my opinion. Their games have been nothing special since err, forever, it's the world that makes it, and yet they focus less and less on it.

I don't know anyone on Bigfooty who is blacklisted by Bethesda so shitposters might be more qualified than Kotaku.

And if Kotaku weren't blacklisted and in a rush to be first they may have had the information regarding the nukes and avoided the whole misguided 'omg nukes are just to grief other players' when that isn't the case at all

Everyone can see the effect the original war had on the world through playing the games but the games have always left the decisions in the hands of the players you can blow up megaton if you wish, you can nuke the master if you have the required skills.

The only problem with 76 is the introduction of other players so even if you personally don't want to nuke the joint and would rather fight the scorchbeasts you can be guaranteed someone else will.

And to take it back to your point these are just the first people to leave the vaults they are being attacked by increasing numbers of flying beasts and they have one way to stop them, you as a player are trying to survive.

Most of the doco released yesterday was about the world they have created, they may have missed the mark regarding not having npc's but they have handcrafted the entire state into a world to explore.

Look man I think we’re clearly just going to have to agree to disagree but your key takeway from this should be don’t @ me with that shit

It's a forum don't post if you don't want to have a discussion

I think the outrage for this game is a bit over the top, if you don’t like the sound of it don’t play it, you just have to watch the making of the game to see that it isn’t something staying true to the old formula it’s something new to try that I’m fairly sure it won’t be a factor in future Fallout games where single player should be the focus.

This is just a game to play with friends and just travel around and muck about in a big open world, nothing wrong with that. I might get frustrated playing the game but I admire the idea behind the game and I’ll atleast want to try it out for myself, I can always go back to the old games for the original fallout feel.

I've been playing FO4 again and after playing Witcher the load times in 4 are infuriating, given the map is 4 times bigger than 4 i really hope they have figured out a way to make the experience seamless.

One day our grandkids will look up at us and say ‘Papa, where were you during the Fallout culture wars of 2018?’ and we’ll say ‘On the front line, son. On the front line’.

And then he’ll gank us and run off with our loot before stopping to nuke our settlement as we will all live in the fully immersive government-mandated fallout VRMMORPGMOBAFPS experience.

And it will happen again and again because griefing... griefing never changes

You know they have specifically said you can't get griefed in this, you don't get loot from pvp kills and your settlement can't be destroyed even by nukes.

Maybe watch the doco and read a bit before mindlessly repeating stuff you read on Kotaku

Is part of the arms agreement with America that you can't even play games that refer to nukes now.....

pretty funny

What's the point then.....

Seems like it will be another generic online game with a Fallout skin. I am bias however as I don't really care much for online games. Much prefer a game with an engaging story line that keeps me hooked.

It's not going to be for everyone but that's fine not every game is made for every person.
They are taking a chance to try something different and it might work or it might not, but the option wasn't FO76 or a single player fallout rpg it was 76 or nothing since Bethesda are working on Starfield and ES6 we won't see FO5 until after ES6 and they need to keep the ip in everyone's minds

Reddit has been a shitshow since it got announced, I mean Reddit comments are pretty shit at the best of times but they really needed to calm their farm. I don't know if people are ACTUALLY that pissed about the game, or whether it's just morons bandwagoning the FO76 hate on their neverending quest for more karma (something that's way too common in that place). At the start we had barely any info on the game, and even now there's plenty we don't know, but it was suddenly the end of the franchise AND the world.

At the end of the day it's a f**king game, deal with it or play/do something else.

I have found that r/fo76 has been a heap better, people there are actually interested in the game
